Rangers GM Phil Esposito firing coach Michel Bergeron on the eve of the playoffs. He felt his coach was trying to undermine him. They had an arguement over player personnel and Esposito lost his cool and inserted himself as coach following Bergie's canning. The Rangers wound up losing in the first round of the playoffs.

If I remember correctly, Vanbiesbrouck was getting shelled in the playoff game, and Phil put the new rookie in ...

It was Mike Richter

Leafs Firing Pat Burns ?
Devils hiring Pat Burns?:thumb:

True, the Leafs firing Pat Burns wasn't beneficial initially. But one thing that people do not know or realize is that Pat Burns wanted to get fired by the Leafs. He felt it was time to move on. You could almost say that the Leafs didn't really have a choice but to fire him.

A few years later, the Leafs hired Pat Quinn and he had the Leafs playing great hockey and back in a couple of Conference Finals. Winning any of those would have meant a trip to the Stanley Cup finals.

What do any of them have to do with what i posted? Did they also play for the habs? My post was about former habs goalies.

Great goalies traded ,with no Montreal fan Base who where also traded
I remember when the likes of Patrick Roy, Jose Theodore & Jaroslav Halak were once hailed as demi-gods by the fan base. Theodore even won both the Vezina & the Hart one season, a rare achievement itself which i predict will happen again this season. But those three 'demigods' couldn't replicate their past successes in Mtl and eventually got traded.

Common Doc the connection was clear ,and I am not a Leaf hater,I like many of your comments :thumb:

I never implied that you were a Leafs hater. I simply didn't get the relativity of your post, but now understand why due to your explanation.

As for the Leafs, they are my favorite team, but to be honest i have several favorite teams. I cheer for the Rangers nearly as much. I also like Chicago and fell in love with the Senators over the past couple of months. As a matter of fact, they would have become my new #1 team had they beat the habs in their series.

I'm a true hockey fan, able to like several teams at the same time. I love the game of hockey & not centered only on one team. I'm not a member of a cult, like many die-hard habs fans. Habs fans sometimes remind me of the Branch Davidians. As for me, i'm a sports polygamist. Not much different than the average 'merbite' when it comes to women. ;)

Go Rangers, Go Bolts!! :thumb:

Same here. When i had more time on my hands, i was a big OHL/LJMQ follower, but haven't paid as much attention to these leagues over the past few years. I do follower other Junior leagues (formerly known as Tier II), but not as much as i should.

I attended a couple of Memorial Cups in the past. Saw Chris Pronger and Mike Ricci when they played for Peterborough. Saw Bob Hartley & Martin Lapointe with the Laval Titans. Philippe Boucher with Chicoutimi, etc. I felt he was as good as Pronger back then. But Pronger never got off the ice, a fact people watching the Petes never fully realized. Saw Lindros with the Generals and boy was he getting booed everywhere he played! Owen Nolan with the Cornwall Royals was one of the most dominant power forwards i have ever seen!

I remember watching Nick Kypreos with the North Bay Centennials. He holds a few scoring records with that franchise. He later said that in his first pro training camp (with Hartford), he realized early that in order to stick with the team & have a head start in an NHL career, he'd have to start using his fists i order to make his mark. It worked.

Great junior hockey memories, Booker L. I had nearly forgot that Gretzky played an entire year in the Soo. Remember when Dougie Gilmour played for Cornwall? Man, he was amazing for such a little guy! Wasn't Orval Tessier their coach at the time?

Bob Hartley with the Hawkesbury Hawks....i had also forgot about that. I never really followed the Hawks, but did follow the Pembroke Lumberkings in that same league.

Since you're as versed in the OHL and the Q as i am...probably more...do you remember the tragic car accident suffered by Penguins top pick Michel Briere when he was on his way back home following the end of the season? He had been a big star in the Q for the Shawinigan Bruins and his career with the Penguins had great promise at the time. I think he was only 21 years old at the time. I remember reading about him in Montreal Matin at the time & they had several pictures of his open casket. I've been through Malartic a few times in the past & there's a picture of him at the town's entrance. Isn't the current hockey arena in Shawinigan named in his honor?

Yes good memories

Orval Tessier was the early coach of the Royal when they won there first Memorial Cup (72),he went to coach the Kitchener, Rangers sometime after (81)finalist to the memorial Cup

Dale Hawerchuk with the Royals and Doug Carpenter and Bob Kilger as a coach ,Memorial Cup Champ (80,81)

I do remember Michel Briere ,but its definitely not good memories as you are saying ,tragic death .
Having lived in Ottawa for many years I was able to follow many Junior Hockey Club in different leagues
The Great Steve Yzerman with the Nepean Raiders same league as the Lumber Kings which I saw play many times .I still have family in Nepean
Jacques Lemaire Coaching Les Chevaliers De Longueuil against Mario Lemieux et Les Voisins DE Laval
Michael Bossy with Le National De Laval ,the only Junior player to ever score 70 goals plus every year .

Cheers

I had forgot that Doug Carpenter had also coached Cornwall. Was Lemaire coaching Longueuil at the time JJ Daigneault played for them? I remember he had a brilliant junior career. Did you ever see Denis Savard play when he was a junior? He & Denis Cyr were a great duo. Only Savard managed to remain a prolific high scorer in the NHL. Cyr played a few games in the NHL. What about the great Pat Lafontaine? I remember how great he was when he played in the Q. What a player!

p.s. You must have also seen Jeremy Roenick when he played for the Hull Olympiques.

Yes I saw The 3 Denis ,Cyr,Savard,Tremblay .at the time there was a all star game between the OHL and the QMJHL the match was held at the Ottawa Civic Center ,I went .
But I also attended games a Bob Guertin Arena which is just across the river ,Home of the Hull Olympiques ,which by the way where owned by none other then Wayne Gretzky (the 80's)
I believe Jacques Lemaire coached JJ Daigneault 1 year in Longueuil
I saw many many players some I remember more then others
Lafontaine made some rookie CHL records that will probably never be broken
Has for Roenick he did play in Hull but very shortly

Wasn't Luc Robitaille also a partner with Gretzky in that venture?

The 3 Denis were legendary in the junior hockey circles back then. You are very fortunate to have seen them play at the time.

It's amazing that the Ottawa-Hull area could support two junior hockey franchises. I wonder if having them in different leagues helped them succeed?

Do you think Benoit Groulx will be back in Gatineau, or do you expect him to move on to bigger things? It was unfortunate that his team this season got mixed up on that infamous Boston Pizza sex scandal. It's good to hear that the team and its players were recently cleared of any wrongdoing. But Groulx didn't need this crap on his resume, even if he had nothing to do with what happened.

Well its two different cities even if they are close apart ,not same league ,not same Province

Well Groulx won Gold at the WJC that does look good on the resume .

Peter Chiarelli ?
Good move ?Bad move ?

I think it was a good move by the Oilers since it adds stability to the organization and he's got a good track record. His acquisition adds a face to the franchise. Chiarelli is one of the most respected GMs in the league.

I think it'll hurt Boston. Sure, he screwed up when he traded Tyler Seguin. The players he got back were not equal in value to what he gave away. Many GMs around the league didn't even know at the time that Seguin was available. He could have got a heck of a better return had he made more phone calls. He also didn't get much in return in the long run for trading Phil Kessel to Toronto. Kessel was only 21 when he got traded. But among one of his biggest failures was to address more effectively the salary cap issue.

However, he did make a lot of good moves. One of his first ones was trading for Zdeno Chara, whom he knew from his days as assistant GM in Ottawa. He hired Claude Julien, etc.
