I think I just miss being young, and unaware. Learning phone numbers by heart. Knocking on your friends door, to see if they could come out and play.
Playing in the park, until the sun would dip below the train tracks. No need for a phone, nor a watch. That's how we knew, time was up.
Unboxing nerfs guns at sears and then hidding in the clothing section, having a full on war. The verry patient security guard who kicked us out...

Miss the time before social media and when people have a longer attention span.

Trick is turning the smart phone into a “dumb” phone. No social media and any games. Turn off all notifications. No WhatsApp or whatever group chat app.
Just usual phone calls/texting, music, reading books and when you are the gym for your workouts.

There are things about the past that were objectively better.
In the late 90's - early 2000's, and before social media, there was a genuine hope for the future in society, everyone was optimistic.
Today you feel like everything is about to collapse at any moment.
The economy and job market has never been as bad as it is today (thank AI, way too many people and too few good jobs), university degrees for the most part are now a waste of money and don't guarantee anything. The 2008 'recession' was a golden age compared to today. We're overpopulated, and there's less and less cake to go around.
The housing market also has never been as bad, too much power has been given to developers, and most people can't afford to buy homes anymore, thanks also to overpopulation again, and governments aggressively driving population numbers up by any means. There was a time 10+ years ago when you didn't have to be a millionaire to buy a home.
In that vein, with developers given free rein by governments, quaint old neighbourhoods all over are being eradicated or gentrified to make ugly overpriced condos that have zero heritage or aesthetic value.
It feels like in the past 10 years, the world I once knew and loved is being deliberately and exponentially erased by devils in high places...

Pop/rock songs with deep, meaningful lyrics. You know when you had to read to lyrics without the music to understand their meaning? I'm no music afficionado, but I cannot think of a popular contemporary song with complex and/or poetic lyrics.

To rehash previous sentiments, when the overall attention span of human beings had not degenerated to that of a goldfish.
I have my hunches that the anti-car attitude in cities like Montreal is in large part due to the realization that the horde of zombies that walks down the street staring into their phones might well be brain-dead enough to do the same while behind the wheel. This could have apocalyptic consequences, so the powers that be are setting the bar higher for owning and driving a car. Because some people should absolutely not drive a car when they can barely walk down the street without bumping into other people or falling flat on their face.

Some of the little things like the chocolate bar Caravan, the Papineau cookies, at Couche-Tard around 2009 they had slush machines that had frozen coffee french vanilla that was so freaking good, it was made by Van Houtte. I tried going directly at the source, they don't even have it anymore there. Not that long ago Couche-Tard in my town still had a frozen coffee type but it was not as good as back then (still not bad tough), but the machine broke a few times and now they only have colored slush. Of course there is still Tim wich offer something like this but i really liked the one they had at Couche-Tard back then lol.
Video Stores and everything physical media is what i miss the most. Yeah i like the convenience of Netflix and such, i can't lie, but there was something fun going to the video store to rent a movie and a video game, sometimes buying one of the extra copy of a movie when they downsized their inventory. Stores like Futurshop, Archambault and Walmart had great physical media sections. Now either they entirely gone or they only have a little bit. For now there is still some used store that exist and i love going to these but i noticed new recent movies are much harder to find because they simply sell them less physically.
But one of the thing i miss the most is my "innocence". I mean i remember a time when i was not aware of how bad things were in the world. At worst i was seeing crime in Montreal in the news or newspaper but that was it. I knew some countries were starving in Africa or such but i was not aware of all the horrible stuff happening everywhere, all the wars, all the crimes. Social medias and algorythme made it that once you see it once and interact, then you get bombaded. Its crazy.
There is also "feelings" i wish i could experience again. I mean i can still play a new video game and have fun but i seen so much by now and maybe its cause im older, it does not feel the same as my first time playing Gears of War in 2006 online, or trying that FEAR demo on my 360 from a mag i bough.
Oh and finally, TV SHOWS !! I miss the whole 22 episodes show we used to have. It seem now all there is in that format is cheap cop/hospital shows and such. All the Stargates, Buffy, Charmed, Andromeda and so on ... Now you got some great streaming shows but they only last 8 to 10 episodes ... and often they are cancelled after one season. I recently watched Motorhead on Prime, loved it, but then looking for when season 2 was coming i saw it was litterally canceled like a month after dropping on Prime. Wtf...
