Farrell aint crap. He is a ok manager but not a Torre or Lasorda. What happened tho, you said Lind was going to the sox?

So far, Farrell has been a mediocre manager. But truth be told, he had to deal with a lot of injuries last season where over half of the starting pitching staff was lost for the most part of the season.

But many decisions he took throughout the season left many people (and players) scratching their heads. I remember one game where he pinch-hit for J.P. Arencibia in favor of Omar Visqel. The decision not only backfired, but it incensed Arencibia who was hot at the time. But that was only one questionable decision of many.

But his biggest fault was when it comes to discipline & player accountability. It was as bad as the days of chicken & beer in the Red Sox clubhouse during games. Players regularly committed the same mistakes/errors & did as they pleased (e.g. the Yunel Escobar incident) since the chances of being disciplined by the manager were low. A few players improved, but others regressed (Ricky Romero, Brett Lawrie, etc) under this manager. I could name so many negatives. But John Farrell is a very nice guy. However, i'm not sure he's cut out to be a MLB manager....especially one consistently put under the microscope in a city like Boston.

When news of Farrell's trade to Boston leaked out, reports from various media people were that Adam Lind was the player headed to Boston. It made sense for the Jays, since he has a big contract & still has a few years left to go on his contract. They don't really have room for him on the roster since Edwin Encarnacion has played extremely well at first base for most of the season, and David Cooper could easily replace him & for cheaper. My guess is that Boston must have balked at picking up Lind's contract & history of chronic back problems.

Love former Jays player Marco Scutaro!

Class all the way & this series' MVP!! Good luck in the World Series, Marco!! :thumb:
And former Sox shortstop. Way to go, Marco. A total class act.

So far, Farrell has been a mediocre manager.
As was Francona before he came to Boston. Personally, I'd have hired Brad Ausmus, but the Sox players sure seem happy with the move.

I agree. My guess is that the Red Sox see Farrell as a bit in the same mold as Joe Torre, who also was a mediocre manager before he moved to New York. I also would have hired Brad Ausmus if i were them, but since Farrell had been #1 on their radar since last year and became available, they went with their gut-instinct. I read that Ausmus' interview reminded many of Joe Maddon's interview with the Sox several years ago before getting the manager's job in Tampa.

Ausmus would be a great candidate for the Jays, if he wants it. However, i'm not sure the team wants to revisit past history by hiring someone with zero MLB managing experience. Tim Wallach, Tony Pena, Demario Hale & Sandy Alomar Jr. are all good candidates. There's also Tory Lovulo, Brian Butterfield & Sal Fasano from within their own organization. Wallach may not want to relocate to Toronto, which was the case two years ago before they hired Farrell. Out of that bunch, Alomar might be their best bet. Fasano is also highly regarded as a potential future manager, but so far the highest level he's managed is AA. Paul Molitor's name has been circulated, but is he really a serious candidate? I'm not even certain he'd be interested in the job.

Joe Maddon is so far above every other MLB manager. This guys a genius!!

I agree, but Buck Showalter has to be in second place. I also highly respect Bob Melvin of the A's.

On another note, the Marlins fired manager Ozzie Guillen, who was a total bust in his first & only season in Miami.

Well, I'm not one for making a lot of predictions, but I'm going to offer one here. Sometime between now and the time we all wake up tomorrow morning, Joe.T will come on in here and talk about the day soon to come when Pablo Sandoval will be wearing a Yankee uniform.

I've revised my position:

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall-of-Fame.

Any player who has boosted his stats while using steroids/HGH should not be in the Hall-of-Fame.

Barry Bonds likely would have made it to the HoF without using the roids, but as they say: "You snooze, you lose." That's the risk you take if you decide to cheat & are later caught cheating.

As for Rose, it's only been proven that he gambled as a manager. Had he never become a manager, he would have been in the HoF a long time ago. I also regard MLB baseball being very hypocritical in regards to the gambling issue. Why did they allow Las Vegas to have a AAA team? I mean, Las Vegas of all places!!! I believe Reno also has a AAA ball team. Nuts!

Anything can happen, but the outlook for the Tigers is extremely bleak. Who could have predicted they'd be down 3-0 in this series where many had picked them to win the World Series? Unreal!!

Yeah, once the elections & baseball will be over, i'll start to miss hockey. Sure, the NBA season will start & the Raptors will have a good team this season, but still......

What i'm hoping is that both Bettman & Fehr will come to their senses & let a mediator come in and try to fix whatever misunderstanding they have. I can't blame the players, since this negotiation from the start was never a negotiation and it was a powerplay by the owners to force the players into a corner and concede everything the owners wanted them to concede.

However, there's a new sheriff in town and he's never lost. His name is Fehr. He's got nothing to lose, since he's retiring once the new collective agreement is signed. The owners will end up getting their bigger share of the pie, but not as much as what Bettman promised them, and most of them will lose millions of $$ during the lock-out, even though they'll never admit they did.

Time to take a step back, boys...and let one or two mediators take over. Keeping Bettman and Fehr in the picture isn't doing anyone any good, they're not budging an inch, and it's time for someone else to step in and try to find any type of common ground.

Time to play hockey!!!

I can't believe the way the series is going so far! Detroit can't score a run to save their life. It's awful. That layoff sure fucked up their mojo.
I know, I know. You'd think they were the Yankees!

Former Jays coach Brian Butterfield joins Red Sox coaching staff

Brian Butterfield has been hired as third-base coach for the Boston Red Sox, the same position he held under new Red Sox manager John Farrell the past two years with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Red Sox made the announcement on Tuesday.

He is the second former Toronto coach coming to Boston. The team previously announced that Torey Lovullo would be the bench coach after serving as first-base coach under Farrell.

Butterfield, 54, has coached for 16 years in the majors as part of his 34 years of pro baseball experience as a player, coach and minor-league manager. He was with Toronto for the past 11 years, serving as bench coach in 2008 and 2009.

He also coached for Buck Showalter with the New York Yankees from 1994-95 and the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2000.

Brian Butterfield is one guy whom i didn't want to see leave Toronto. He's a great coach to have on any team.

Actually, i think even the most die-hard Red Sox fans on this board aren't that impressed by the John Farrell hiring. Personally, having witnessed Farrell at work over the past two seasons, i honestly don't know what all the fuss was all about concerning his abilities. No one who followed the Jays organization has. He appears to be a very nice & gentle person, which i have no doubt he is. He's probably also a very good upper management type (which he was when with the Cleveland Indians) and decent pitching coach (which he was with the Red Sox) if working with the right personnel. But as a decision-maker, there's a lot to be desired.

Having watched Bobby Valentine's interview on "Costas" this past weekend, i realize more & more that he never really had much of a chance in Boston. He replaced a very popular manager for one, and then the injuries to key players took their toll. He was put under a microscope from day 1, and his comments in regards to Youkilis were blown out of proportion. The starting pitchers he relied on struggled, they lost their closer for the most part of the season, and the injury to their sparkplug (Ellesbury) really hurt them. And once that big trade was made (losing Adrian Gonzalez), it was all over after that. Maybe had they hung on to Gonzalez, they might have had a chance. However, there was no stopping the Orioles.

I don't know who the Jays will chose to be their next manager. Yesterday, the Jays got permission to interview Matt Williams. The name Sandy Alomar Jr. keeps popping up in the picture. Will the Jays get permission to talk to Tim Wallach? EB's clone has even had his name pop up (or he'll be promoted to the coaching staff), so has Don Wakamatsu's name. My money's on Alomar. If does get the job, don't be surprised if former teammate (and recent Jays player) Omar Visquel joins the coaching staff.
