Vegas Radio Announcer Dan Duva
I heard a very interesting interview on WFAN in New York City this afternoon with Dan Duva. Dan Duva is the 33 year old radio play by play announcer for the Vegas Golden Knights. He is originally from the NYC area and grew up in NJ as a NJ Devils fan.
Anyway during the interview he said a few interesting things. He said that Gallant does not overplay his top lines and gives all his lines equal ice time in order to keep them fresh. Duva believes that by doing this Gallant has kept them team fresher and healthier than opposing teams.
Duva said the 3 most popular players among Vegas fans are Karlsson, Schmidt and Fleury. He said that the development of Karlsson into a 43 goal scorer who had the highest plus minus rating and is a 2 way player is the most remarkable development for any Golden Knights player.
Duva said that the October 1 shooting in Vegas indirectly led to a greater connection between fans and the team. Vegas had to cancel numerous opening season celebrations and other activities because the shooting occurred on the day of the last exhibition games. As a result of the cancellations of season opening activities the players on Vegas used the free time to visit hospitals and connect with victims, families and the community. Duva said that because the players were largely anonymous in the community except for Fleury, and because of the support they showed to the community, they had instant rapport with the fan base as a result of their response to the Vegas shooting tragedy.
Finally Duva revealed that the players, in a group text among the team during camp, started to refer to themselves as the “Golden Misfits.” Duva was either privy to or saw these texts. He said the team developed a chip on its collective shoulder and a bond was created with the “Golden Misfits” moniker- much like the “Dirty Dozen” of World War II or other well known misfit groups. But the team itself, not the press, created the “Golden Misfits” nickname.
Finally the young Duva said his idol as an announcer was Mike “Doc” Emrick. He said when you listen to him announce a hockey game you know there is no place he would rather be, and it’s important for the audience to feel this.
More on Duva whose name is actually spelled D’Uva:
