Vegas Radio Announcer Dan Duva

I heard a very interesting interview on WFAN in New York City this afternoon with Dan Duva. Dan Duva is the 33 year old radio play by play announcer for the Vegas Golden Knights. He is originally from the NYC area and grew up in NJ as a NJ Devils fan.

Anyway during the interview he said a few interesting things. He said that Gallant does not overplay his top lines and gives all his lines equal ice time in order to keep them fresh. Duva believes that by doing this Gallant has kept them team fresher and healthier than opposing teams.

Duva said the 3 most popular players among Vegas fans are Karlsson, Schmidt and Fleury. He said that the development of Karlsson into a 43 goal scorer who had the highest plus minus rating and is a 2 way player is the most remarkable development for any Golden Knights player.

Duva said that the October 1 shooting in Vegas indirectly led to a greater connection between fans and the team. Vegas had to cancel numerous opening season celebrations and other activities because the shooting occurred on the day of the last exhibition games. As a result of the cancellations of season opening activities the players on Vegas used the free time to visit hospitals and connect with victims, families and the community. Duva said that because the players were largely anonymous in the community except for Fleury, and because of the support they showed to the community, they had instant rapport with the fan base as a result of their response to the Vegas shooting tragedy.

Finally Duva revealed that the players, in a group text among the team during camp, started to refer to themselves as the “Golden Misfits.” Duva was either privy to or saw these texts. He said the team developed a chip on its collective shoulder and a bond was created with the “Golden Misfits” moniker- much like the “Dirty Dozen” of World War II or other well known misfit groups. But the team itself, not the press, created the “Golden Misfits” nickname.

Finally the young Duva said his idol as an announcer was Mike “Doc” Emrick. He said when you listen to him announce a hockey game you know there is no place he would rather be, and it’s important for the audience to feel this.

More on Duva whose name is actually spelled D’Uva:

Phil Kessel and Rutherford agree for a trade this summer...it seems things were not going well with coach Sullivan.....and it was obvious....SO... with wich team Kessel would be a good fit?......92 pts last year.

Why is it that Kessel seems to wear out his welcome wherever he plays? Reportedly he is upset because he wants to be put on a line with Malkin (who wouldn’t?) but instead was jerked around onto different lines:

Despite being “jerked around”, Kessel had a career high 92 points, which suggests to me he was one of better multipurpose players in the NHL. I don’t understand how they replace a guy like that??????? Maybe someone needs to sit him and Sullivan down in a room and get them talking? 92 points is elite level production in this modern NHL.

Absolutly right...BUT Kessel is a very special player not easy to coach..attitude and for many not a team player....and Sullivan also is special....so we will see...perhaps they will reach an agreement.....BUT i really believe Kessel will move.....

92 point players do not grow on trees. If Trump and Kim can sit down and talk about nukes, Sullivan and Kessel can sit down and talk about playing on Malkin's line more.

As it happened so often in the past, Fleury was not good with the puck at his feet... And the Capitals know it.

Ouffff....Caps 3-2.....thanks to Eller, Ovi, Orpik and HOLTBY.....what a spectacular save he did with 2 min. to play.....could be the save des séries. Kuzny left with injury...it looks bad....but they will still do it.

Nice save by Holtby but why not elevate the puck and shoot high as opposed to low? It looked like if he went high Holtby had no shot.

Regarding the Ovechkin goal, I watched the replay a few times and the quickness of the release on his shot is remarkable. I think the main reason he is so effective as a goal scorer is the remarkable quickness with which he shoots - goalies have no time to react properly before the puck is in the net. On that play the Vegas defense looked a bit lazy and slow to the draw.

Caps 3-1 on Vegas....a BIG one....again they played very well--almost perfect game. Kuzny was back and what a dynamic duo with Ovi.....spectacular. Washington is waiting for that moment since 43 years....it's about time and now they are closer than ever....hope they will do it.....it looks very good.

Washington really looked good. I was impressed with the Ovechkin goal because it was a hustle play. Washington looks like they really want it.......

Ils n'ont pas vraiment le choix...doivent donner leur max et bombarder Holtby qui peut facilement flancher MAIS j'ai grande confiance que les Caps vont again fermer la porte et voguer vers une 3ème victoire.

Caps 6-2....the magic is no more there for Vegas....they had opportunities in the first period BUT the gods were not on their side....on the other. Kuzny again 4 points last night and 31 in those playoffs....what a dominant player. Would like them to win the Cup at home....would be a great and historic moment.
