Teams that have met or about to meet with John Tavares and his agent are:

-NY Islanders
-Toronto Maple Leafs
-San Jose Sharks
-Boston Bruins
-Dallas Stars

Several other teams have shown interest in signing Tavares, including Montreal, Nashville, Vegas, St-Louis and Colorado. It's not certain if Tavares has agreed or will agree to meet those teams.

Actually JVR loved Toronto and even offered the Leafs a 'hometown' discount last season in order to remain with the Leafs. But the Leafs knew JVR would get over $7 million/year on the market and balked at re-signing him. He's got great hands but is a very soft player. Surprise-surprise he ended up getting slightly overpaid at $7.5 million/year on a multiyear contract from the Philadelphia Flyers. I'm very happy for him and he's a good guy.

The Leafs wanted to save the money they'd spend re-signing JVR in order to boost up their defence and make a run at John Tavares. However the Leafs erred in not trading away JVR last season since it was obvious to the Leafs and JVR that he would definitely not be back this season. The Leafs are stacked at the forward positions and several forwards they have playing with the Marlies will likely be playing in the NHL either this season or next.

I'm hearing that Erik Karlsson will likely be traded either today or in the coming days. Bobby Ryan might also be part of a package deal in the Karlsson trade.

And as i've reported in the past (ever since he was traded to the Leafs last season) 35-year old Tomas Plekanec is likely headed back to the Habs. It looks like he may be getting a one-year deal.

And it's now confirmed that Paul Stastny is headed to Vegas on a multiyear deal worth about $6.5 million/season.

It also looks like Tyler Bozak will sign with the St-Louis Blues. I actually think he would have been a good fit in Montreal centring one of the top two lines. He's a very good faceoff man and great penalty killer who also plays the powerplay. Good thing for the Leafs he'll be playing in the western conference.

The media goofed on this one, they had Toronto as a long shot when they should have been the favorite all along:

Which media do you get your news from??? Toronto had been rumoured to be one of the teams Tavares would be heading to over the past two years. As soon as Stamkos nixed the Leafs to go back to Tampa rumours were already circulating that Toronto would go all-out to sign Tavares a year later.

We've learned over the past week that Tavares was down to 5 or 6 teams and that the Leafs were right on top. He grew up being a die-hard Leafs fan and prior to joining the NHL was never shy to express his wish to play for the Leafs once he'd turn pro.

Just a couple of days ago we learned it was either between the Leafs, San Jose or Boston. There was always a small chance he'd return to the lowly Islanders but i doubted since i knew how strong his wish to play for his hometown team was.

Tavares turned down more money from the Islanders in order to join the Leafs.

No they were not the favorite or in the top 3! Toronto was 10-1 - which is a field horse odds that suck, although the payout is good if they win. The favorites were Islanders and Sharks at 2-1 and 3-1 followed by TB at 7-1. I posted this a while back:

Now... Who's gonna play at the wings?

You got one line centered by Tavares, another one by Matthews (I can't see who #1 and #2) and the third line centered by Marner or Nylander...

On the wings, you got Brown, Kapanen and Martin...

All the others are also centers... Kadri, Hyman, Komarov, Marleau, Moore...

With that surplus of centers I would think Bergevin would be on the phone and trying to make a trade with the new kid GM at Toronto.

Does Toronto have too many centers? Or can you never have too many centers?

Titty,

Clearly Taveras will center the first line. Based on NHL seniority, and pay grade. You don't pay someone $11 million a year to center a second line.
