Was doing some grocery shopping the other day and as always, you see a variety of people doing their shopping...eventually you run into an overweight woman who's basically borderline obese. And when passing you just have to check out the items in her cart. As soon as you spy fattening items you pass judgement...

Now what if that same overweight woman is being followed by 2 young kids. What's your judgement then? Same weight, same grocery cart full of goodies...only difference is one is a mother and the other is overweight. Do you give more or less scrutiny to the lady who's a mother?

hahahaha! Well if you see me at the grocery ... you can think what you want ... it will not change anything for me!

I like eating ice cream and many other fatty things! I enjoy every snack I take for all the anorexic of this world! Sorry but ... like I used to say ... I only take care of my health ... and 'til I will be able to continue to eat what I want and have a good health ... I will do. :D :p

Yes ... i'm a mom also ... of twins ... then, I will never have the same shape as I used to have at 17yo but ... I found myself still very pretty with or without agreement! ;)

How about when you see an overweight man at the grocery store? Your question is not only pointless, it is also sexist.

Why would you care what someone buy? How is it any of your business?

If you don't like large women, just look somewhere else and move on! I don't understand that contempt some people have towards BBW. Live and let live!

And by the way, do you think you guys are automatically nice to look at because you are thin? Well I have some news for you my dear...

I have a relative that comes up to visit and she is pretty huge. I really like her but she makes no attempt to get excercise and when we are out everything she orders is the most fattening thing possible. She will not comprimise taste for a few calories. I have never been shopping in a grocery store with her but I can only imagine. It bothers me about her choices but I choose to ignore it. I have another family memmber that is absolutely huge. I mean she could eat the first one. She says she has thyroid problems and can't lose weight. I have never seen her stop eating for more than 30 seconds and like the first person, there is nothing she won't eat. At family get togethers whatch out for your extremities and the small children who can get caught in the vortex of her eating.

Now if they pay for their own gastric bypass then I do not care. But if we go to some goverment paid healthcare and these tubbies that have never passed up a meal, never tried to start an excercise routine gets a free bypass that I and other tax payers paid for....now I'm pissed.

This goes for men as well.

Hello Ariane,

Obviously, the question should be about men and women. For me, I mind my business, except that I do feel some concern for the person since the more overweight anyone is the more and worse health problems.

Why should I care? How is it any of my business? For one, maybe a little human compassion. I did know one co-worker who literally ate his way to death before the age of 50 because he would only eat the richest and tastiest foods as much as he could get them.

Also, and the key reason why it is the business of others is like smoking we all end up paying far more more in health costs because of those who are excessive in bad health habits. I understand some have special physiological or biological issues different from most that makes excess difficult to control. But many just over-indulge. All of us pay for that, not just the excessive. And, if we all only paid for what we did, many of us might still care about what happens to others.

Cheers,

Merlot

Merlot, if you start to judge and/or worry about every person who has unhealhty habits, you are not out of the woods!

And come on, I've read breadman posts for years. This thread was not created out of concern or compassion for fellow human beings.

It strikes me as hypocritical for a Merbite to worry about someone's personal habits costing society in health costs. Aren't sex workers and consumers more likely to get stds which require treatment than the monogamous? Anyway, doesn't the amount spent on buying sex for a typical .....monger far exceed the portion of taxes for an average person allotted to medical costs?

Where does it end? Should people be obliged to exercise, forbidden from risky hobbies like mountain climbing etc. to minimize our total health care bill?

I notice that families where the man is fit and the children are young, the over weight woman is often walking behind trying to keep to the walking pace. This is especially evident in vacations down south where we see the family together.

At buffets, overweight men & women, are not embarrassed at really filling up their plates with everything they can. And they can really wolf it down. And forget green and colured veggies. The plates are full of meats and sauces. Then of course ten desserts.

Fat people in general think they will starve. So when they get turista (diarrhea) in Mexico they don't stop eating. They would rather have cramps, spray the toilet bowl and stink up the bathroom twenty times a day than to have a hunger pang and not eat for a couple of days.

I understand some of arguments here ...

I have a friend who is 410lbs actually and his leg just don't want to support him anymore so he's in a hospital since 2 weeks now and the doctor don't do anything to find what else it could be then his overweight ...

when I went to see him at the hospital ... I was just thinking about "how come" he let himself gain that much pounds without doing anything ???!!! Now he's thinking about the stomach surgery ... On my side ... I was 80lbs bigger then today 3 years ago and I will never let myself gain pounds as much as I used to.

Well ... I can understand what some of you just try to point out.
I think we shouldn't judge people on what they looks like or what they do ... without knowing personaly this person ... and at the grocery ... it's definively not a place where people goe's to be judge by others! come on! In a club, I can understand ... but at the grocery!

I don't judge, I feel pity for the obese. I admire women who are comfortable with their "extra pounds" and know how to look good. I pity the vast majority of the obese who are not happy with their appearance, do not know where to begin to make changes, are eating themselves to an early grave, and have to suffer the scorn of the self-righteous who pass judgement on them. And this is also why I keep my pity to myself (except on an anonymous message board of little consequence) - the last thing they need is the humiliation of my pity.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly...but I do give more lattitude to women who have had children. As we get older we find it harder and harder not to gain weight...then we read about mothers who have kids who are allowed to roam free in the kitchen and are past the obese stage themselves.

Hello Breadman,

Women with children should not be excused for being obese any more than women without children. That's a cop out in most cases. I know many women with multiple children who are fit well into their 40s and 50s. True there are physiological changes. Weight gain often occurs after pregnancy. But saying that can excuse obesity is untrue. If so then where does that leave the greater number of obese men. Looking at these stats there isn't much difference between genders, except men are worse. So having children doesn't make it harder to avoid obesity.

http://www.obesity.org/statistics/

Among 2007 BRFSS respondents:

25.6% were obese.

26.4% of men and 24.8% of women were obese.

The obesity prevalence ranged from 19.1% for men and women aged 18--29 years to 31.7% and 30.2%, respectively, for men and women aged 50--59 years.

By race/ethnicity and sex the obesity prevalence was highest for non-Hispanic black women (39.0%) followed by non-Hispanic black men (32.1%).

The obesity prevalence was higher in the South (27.3%) and Midwest (26.5%) and lower in the Northeast (24.4%) and West (23.1%).

As you can see there are more are obese men than women. So why aren't you mentioning the men?

Good luck,

Merlot

This, I can (sort of) agree with.

Unless it's a matter of imminent life or death, you shouldn't get bypass surgery anyway. You are not willing to eat well and exercice? Well, too bad for you!

That being said... What about the 600 lbs morbidly obese person? Should we really let them die because they can't control their addiction to food? If that's the case, we should do the same for smokers, people with drugs or alcohol addictions, etc... It doesn't seem right to me.

There is lot of different stuff annoying people for no real reason. Personally i don't care about fat people, im not thin myself, for me its emo haircuts that i find horribly ugly... I mean there is real emos, the pathetic borderline suicidal peoples that can only cry and complain all the time, then there is this new "style" , normal people, but they have this emo haircut that make them looks like fags, and when i say fags i have nothing against homosexual, i use it as a general therm.

Why they bother me? cause they look ridiculous at my eyes and that emo are too much assiocated with metal-punk these days, and it makes us look bad.

But i keep it for myself when i see them, because im the kind of guy that think as long as you respect me i will respect you. But if somebody just even DARE to say something direspectfull to me, he cross the line, and you can make sure ill do everything possible to have him knock me first, so im free of beating the shit out of him without risk of being pursue for assault...:p

Yes maybe we should. Unless they want to make a commitment to change. In a perfect world you are free to eat, smoke, inject what you please but you have to have some personnel responsibility rather than the nanny state taking care of you. All things in moderation!

BTW - Congratulations on losing 80 Lbs. I struggle a bit with weight myself and lost about 30 lbs in the last 18 mos. And I love volumpious woman;)

I didn't lose 80 lbs. Véro did. ;)

And I think you mean "voluptuous". :)

I don't believe in turning my back to someone who needs my help. I don't think we should act like that as a society either. Because if we do, where does it end? Aren't we living in an indivualistic enough world?
