Fading Gigolo with Woody Allen on Netflix. It was an OK movie, I was expecting more than W. Allen.
I've never been a big fan of his. But i did like "Midnight in Paris" very much. 'Blue Jasmine' was also good, but Cate Blanchett's great performance surely helped.

Yes, I liked midnight in Paris too. I have watched it a couple of times. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of Owen Wilson, usually he tends to play in stupid movies. A friend recommended Blue Jasmine. I will watch it when I get a chance. Another disappointing movie by Woody Allen is : From Rome with Love.

The Theory of Everything about the life of Physicist Stephen Hawking. Some touching scenes, a few funny moments especially when Hawking was caught by a Cambgridge Professor gawking at a Penthouse magazine. It was hard to understand what Hawking was saying when he started having trouble to talk, subtitles would have helped. Some other scenes were boring as well. I can't wait for the Alan Turing movie which is coming very soon. Nice to see that the movies industry is finally showing some interest in Science.

Interstellar

I went to see this movie last week when i was in Mtl. I saw it on IMAX. It was recommended to me by my good friend Alex K, who enjoyed it very much. He went as far as saying that it was even better than the movie "Gravity", which won many awards last year.

"Interstellar" was directed by Christopher Nolan, one of the top new directors today. He also directed very good movies like "Memento", "Inception" and the "Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight", "The Dark Knight Rises", "Insomnia" and "The Prestige".

It stars best actor winner Mathew McConaughey as a former Nasa astronaut. Anne Hathaway co-stars, along with Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy & John Lithgow, among others.

Here is the storyline from IMD: "In the near future, Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food and extreme changes in climate. When humanity is facing extinction, a mysterious rip in the space-time continuum is discovered, giving mankind the opportunity to widen its lifespan. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The crew of the Endurance are required to think bigger and go further than any human in history as they embark on an interstellar voyage into the unknown. Coop, the pilot of the Endurance, must decide between seeing his children again and the future of the human race."

The movie is nearly 3 hours long. It was filmed using IMAX technology. It's very technical & scientific, which isn't surprising considering some of today's better-known physicists were consultants on the movie. This is a movie which will one day be ranked among the greatest 'epic' space movies of our time, such as "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Gravity", "The Right Stuff" and even "Alien", all movies that inspired Jonathan Nolan over the years.

This movie makes you reflect on how small we really are. A few months ago, i watched a documentary on the Hubble Space Telescope & i was absolutely fascinated at how far our space program and knowledge of space had grown to. I also watched several documentaries by Stephen Hawking and realize now that we are nothing but small particles of dust in such a huge galaxy among thousands and thousands of other galaxies.

This movie may not be for everyone. I know people who will be totally lost when watching this movie. But if you like science & want to see one of the best sci-fi movies you may ever see, then this movie is for you.

After i first saw it, my good friend who recommended it to me called me & asked me what i thought about it. I told him that i found it okay, but maybe a tad too long. However, what made me appreciate the movie better was by doing research on the movie, which is what i usually do after watching a good movie. I then revised my stance about it & came to the conclusion that this movie is a masterpiece. I now plan on seeing it again, hopefully on IMAX instead of on my big-screen tv.

"CHEF" with Jon Favreau. Really light hearted flick and if you love to cook, like myself, you'll love it. Great Soundtrack as well.

Visiting Planet Earth
Hello all.

I went to an early show to see "American Sniper". It's a very evenly paced realistic story like set in the Middle East with Americans facing terrorists like "Zero Dark Thirty", "Hurt Locker", "The Kingdom". This is not one of those superman hero knocks off hundreds of bad guys video game movies. It's got heart backed by realistic tough scenes. No glorification of the fight against terrorism, just very real moments in the risks of trying to survive war and trying to live at home. I enjoyed it because it''s not a pro-war or anti-war propaganda film. It's about one man's experiences and the cold reality of what war does to people and how who lives and dies can be so random.

B to B+

Enjoy,

Merlot

A Walk to Remember and Chasing Liberty.

Wow. Love Mandy Moore. Too bad her movies never surpass $50 Mil. Also her music is so underrated.

Stalingrad

It's a Russian movie that came out in 2013. I pvr'd it from TMN a month or two ago. I watched the other night and absolutely loved it!

The main story occurs during the final months of the famous Stalingrad siege involving the Germans and Soviets during WWII. It's about two different love stories, one involving 5 Soviet soldiers and a Russian girl, and of a Nazi officer and a Soviet girl he fell in love with.

Very good cinematography, very good acting and directing. I highly recommend this movie to any lover of war movies!

Inherent Vice
First movie ever based on a Thomas Pynchon novel. Does an excellent job of capturing the spirit and much of the detail of the book. Pynchon's absurdist humour is well captured, abetted by several fine performances, especially Josh Brolin as a paranoid, hippie-detesting cop in early 70's LA. Fine soundtrack. Who wouldn't want to visit the Chick Planet MP and take advantage of their Pussy Eater's Special?

Romance, go for "The Fault in our Stars".

Best overall, "American Sniper".

Horror go for Dracula Untold, probably the best version I've ever seen.

Comedy, definately St. Vincent with Bill Murray at his absolute best (really he's brilliant).

Sci-fi, Predestination, a really well done time travel flick.

Biography, The Theroy of Everything is "OK", but the real sleeper is "The Imitation Game".

Run away from "Foxcatcher" as it has nothing to inspire ANYONE.

"The Interview" is OK, but don't actually pay money to see it...LOL.

WORKING GIRLS 1986, Not to be confused with Working Girl (1988) (the Melanie Griffith movie)

Lately, I was finally able to see Working Girls (1986), the Lizzie Borden movie, not the Milos Forman one (the singular titles one)

I have to say it's authentic.

I mean as a ''John'' myself and being a confident of courtesans. Working Girls is relatable.

It tells the story of what happens in an incall agency and I thought the movie was the real deal.

Working Girls (1986), the one directed by Lizzie Borden, I still think it's timeless, of course it was made in the 1980's, for the subject matter, it's all true

Run Lola Run (1998)

The film is in German with Subtitles and has a bit of an Independent feel. It's really great!
I've seen it before but it's always great to see it again

Look behind you.
Seen the new Avengers with my daughter a couple of weeks ago, not too impressed, maybe expected too much. Going to see Jurassic world on Friday.

Blackfish. One of the best documentaries i've seen in years. It was made a couple of years ago and was the talk of the Sundance Festival at the time. It is shown once in a while on CNN and is currently on Netflix. I was very moved by this movie. It's also quite educational. I've seen it 4 times over the past 2 weeks or so. And i plan to see it again.
