. My grand-father battled in WW2. He never ever spoke a single word about it. Nada. Actually he barely spoke to anyone at all all his life afterwards.

I have read about this. They even address this in the documentary. The veterans said that the civilians and those that didn't serve at the front just couldn't relate to what the veterans. One vet even said his own father couldn't relate. He said that every conception that his father had was incorrect. The civilians realized this over time and stopped trying to talk to the veterans because it was awkward. The veterans said that they could only talk about the war with other veterans.

Realize that the British lost 3 men in WWI for every man they lost in WWII. They lost just under a million men. I believe it was about 900 thousand.

The French and their "Cult of the Offensive" misguided philosophy that did not work against contemporary battlefield technologies cost them 1.4 MM war dead!

The German's lost 1.8 Million men and the Italians that were courted by both sides and got a better deal from the Entente got into WWI late for territorial gains lost 650 thousand.

What has been fascinating with all these takes on Bandersnatch is that it is clear these TV critics don't understand that non-linear interactive fiction has been around since the 70s. (The very fact he is building a game like that in the 80s is kind of a clue.) Bandersnatch is actually very crude by IF standards, it just has fancier production values. It really is just a Japanese Visual Novel from the 90s. I do think we will see more of it, but they aren't really bringing anything new to the table here.

WWII gets a lot of press for the evils of Fascism, but in terms of just sheer hellish meatgrinder, I still think WWI was worse.

Ok it's not a movie but I just finished watching the UK based serie Sex Education on Netflix and I must admit, to my complete surprise it was really good!

Its basically about sex relation of 16 year old high school-er. But it's very well made, nice soundtrack, very nice cast, hilarious at moment. Ok a bit cheezy at moment but it always rebound with something crazy and cool. Nice serie!

Cheers,

Yeah. I saw it last night. I thought the trailer looked great and I have liked some of Tarantino's work, i.e. Desperado II, and the one with Clooney and Salma Hayek with the snake. Anyway, it totally sucked. I think the movie was too focused on bringing back 60's nostalgia to those who actually lived it. 60's music was great to hear (I love the song Ramblin' Gamblin' Man by Seger which came out in 1969 - I almost wanted to get up out of my seat) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKwXHDs1R6Y. I'm a car buff and seeing some of the 60's hot rods was great, but the story line was absolutely boring. It was loosely based on the Sharon Tate, et al. murders with side-stories involving DiCaprio and Pitt. The ending was the best part - and was a twist on the real life gory brutal murders.

I can agree with bignasty' s review. The first 3/4 of the film was a waste to me. I too liked the trailer. Whoever they paid to do the trailer did a good job convincing me it was worth the $15 for a ticket, lol. Pacino' s part was small and underwhelming for a star his caliber.

Saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood last night. I can see why some may find it kind of dull but I really enjoyed it. It was clever, original and pretty funny a lot of the time. Ya its a long film and some parts are a bit slow. It does revel in 60s nostalgia but I liked that as well as the element of surprise cos like with most Tarantino films you cannot predict where its going. The final act is another blood-soaked typical Tarantino payoff but its done in a subversive witty way....definitely a twist on the real life Manson murders. So many films are now special effects driven spectacles based on comics. Its nice to watch film for adults that features great dialogue, interesting characters and a clever story. DiCaprio and Pitt both give fantastic performances. Not usually a big Brad Pitt fan but he is really great here: a sort of macho laconic Clint Eastwood-type. Maybe it suits him cos he doesn't have too much complex dialogue lol. Leonardo DiCaprio is his usual intense and darkly comic self. Its also kind of touching how the Sharon Tate character is depicted as a sort of happy angel gliding thru a film; a poignant counterpoint to what happened to her in real life. Overall its a film worth watching especially compared to a lot of what is out there now IMHO.

Once upon a time was a let down to me considering how much I loved inglorious and Django. Margot Robbie looked great, but wasn’t understanding the whole point of her and the movie.

Yeah, however enjoyable, there was not much to the film beyond it's own meticulous homage to some of the more obscure & retro aspects of pop culture in the late '60s.

Nor do I get the crass reversal of history that plays out in the finale, all so typical of Tarantino, except as a weird kind of Hollywood wish-fulfillment and belief in fictional heroes to overturn the rather more grim reality.

There are strong elements of homage in all of Tarantino's films. In Django Unchained there was homage to Sergio Leone and Inglorious Bastards was more or less a homage to The Dirty Dozen if not a remake of it. The Hateful Eight, which was not as good as Django Unchained or Inglorious Bastards, was a homage to the Magnificent Seven. Tarantino is deeply influenced by the 1960s and 1970s films. Also, Pulp Fiction was inspired by Rashomon and Jackie Brown was homage to the Blaxploitation films of the early 1970s and featured Pam Grier, who starred in those films.

Brad Pitt is wonderful, and all the homage is fun, up to a point ... but the real story of Manson and the Hollywood of that period is a lot more compelling:

Once again Meta you are dead on. I too am surprised that nobody ever made a big screen movie version recounting the compelling horror that was the Manson murders. There have been two TV movies as far as I know but I found them both pretty average. This is a story that is just begging to be told on the silver screen. I always thought Val Kilmer might make a great Manson; if he were shorter lol.

You do realize the two films you mentioned aren't even Tarantino's movies, right? Both are from Robert Rodriguez, not Tarantino.

The second one you mentioned is From Dusk Till Dawn. For the first one, I'm not even sure what you mean by "Desperado II". Desperado itself was the second film of his El Mariachi trilogy.

Look behind you.
Not a recent movie ( could not fing a movie thread so picked this one ). Had to order Apocalypto ( Mel Gibson ) on Ebay as it is out of copy and very difficult to find ( not cheap either ). There are a few cheap ones out there but they are for UK players and will not play on machines here or not blu-ray.
Anyways, excellent movie IMO. ( subtitles but not much dialogue ).

There are easier ways to find Apocalypto online for free in blu-ray quality. I know no money goes to creators, but in this case (Ebay) no money goes to the creators either. Would have saved you the hassle and you'd have had it in the matter of a few minutes.

The other day i watched "All the Money in the World". It stars Christopher Plummer, Michelle Williams and Mark Wallberg. It's the true story of the kidnapping of Getty heir & grandchild of the wealthiest man in the world at the time, J Paul Getty. The teenage Getty was kidnapped in Italy in the early 70's and his grandfather refused to pay a ransom. It was a pretty good movie and i believe Plummer was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his performance. This is the movie which was supposed to star Kevin Spacey in the Getty role until he was fired after being caught in the me-too movement. Most of his scenes had already been filmed when he was replaced by Plummer, who had to re-shoot all the scenes.
