I'd thought I would follow up on my Irishman review with the latest effort from Tarantino
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I have this love hate relationship with Tarantino. Pulp Fiction is his best movie and it remains highly ranked in my top 10. I loved that entire genre of movies. Jackie Brown is right there. I enjoyed it nearly as much as Pulp Fiction. And then there is Django and Hateful Eight the latter I couldn’t even get through. Once Upon a Time is a little bit like Inglorious Bastards where Tarantino rewrites history. What if the Manson clan would have tried to murder Sharon Tate but went to the wrong house?
This one is long drawn out and meanders a bit just like the Irishman but at least I found the trip down memory lane a little more enjoyable. At least Tarantino had the common sense not to cast a 75 year old man as the cowboy actor or his stunt double. Instead he cast Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt who were age appropriate. Also, the entire movie was unique in a way. The dialogue was fun and not full of tired clichés like the Irishman. Also, there were several scenes that made me laugh in a Big Lebowski sort of way.
I think I will give this movie a 6-7 of 10 just for the unique concept, nostalgia, and dialog. Unlike the Irishman, I do think that I will watch it again and it may grow on me like Lebowski and Stripes and other movies have in the past. Not so for the Irishman. It was too dull, too clichéd and I can’t get past De Niro trying to play a man less than half his age.
Note# If they ever do a real life movie of the Simpsons have De Niro play Montgomery Burns. I can see De Niro as Burns struggling to crush a paper cup while threatening Homer Simpson. Perfect!

^^^Yes, she played Sharon Tate, the young actress that the Manson family eventually carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey and cut out her fetus which they also killed. In QT's recreation of history the Manson family went to the wrong address or something.
Hey, I too am critical of the meandering and lack of direction of this film. I thought it could use some editing. This certainly wasn't one of QT's best. I just liked the dialog between DiCaprio and Pitt. I enjoyed Pitt's role too. His visit to the hippy commune and his fight with Bruce Lee were interesting. I enjoyed their banter and I loved the final scene and how ridiculous it was. Margo didn't do much for me. She was sort of like a teaser. I thought the Manson's were going to get her and we would have to relive the gory details like Helter Skelter. Instead, the two Cowboys kicked the shit out of them which was very enjoyable. I also enjoyed the nostalgia.

Well Hungry it seems like you and I are the only guys here who actually enjoyed Tarantino's latest. Although I do agree it is flawed. To answer NB's question about the point of Robbie as Sharon Tate: I think this was part of the revisionist history of the film, to portray Tate as a beautiful soul who led a charmed life. This serves as kind of a fuck you to what the Manson killers did to her in real life (she was brutally butchered while eight months pregnant). I think Tarantino did this so people would see her more as a happy angel than the unlucky murder victim that she is usually remembered as.
Not true: I enjoyed it. And I was expecting not to, the way the ads mislead you to believe something else. That being said though, it's not Tarantino's best. It's definitely a slow burn kinda movie, but the bright side is that it does reward the viewer for their patience.
Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker
It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it alot. Had low expectations going in because of the previous film (Last Jedi), but this movie totally delivered. JJ Abrams knows how to do a Star Wars film right! :rockon:
There's a few surprisingly emotional scenes in the movie too (and I'm not usually the emotional type!). But one scene got to me in particular, and from then on I was fully invested into the flick. It's a very satisfying ending to the Skywalker saga.

I wasn't expecting much but it was pretty good. Ed Murphy does a great job. I believe that this is a true story about a MC at a nightclub and stand-up comedian that was a pioneer in the Blaxploitation genre of movies. Eddie Murphy's character Rudy Ray Moore is said to be the father of modern Rap. It was entertaining and I'd give it a strong 6-7/10.

I went to see Uncut Gems this afternoon. It’s very good. Adam Sandler in a dramatic role about a crazed gambling addict. Mike Francesa has a cameo as a NYC bookie and The Weeknd, who performs in the movie, has a small role as himself and he attempts to fuck the Sandler character’s mistress (played by Julia Fox who has a terrific ass). Kevin Garnett has a bigger role as himself and his real life passion for jewelry eventually brings him into contact with the Sandler character and his jewelry business.
Overall well done film, and a realistic portrayal of gambling addiction and the behavior it produces. The film ends with a closeup zoom shot much like the final scene of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Probably the best performance in a film by Sandler to date, although I thought his performance in Happy Gilmore was underrated.

I bought the movie the other day and watched in in 4K. I read a review about it last week & figured it's the kind of movie i'd like. I've enjoyed some Quentin Tarentino movies in the past & others i didn't like so much. But one reviewer wrote that this may be his best ever, including Kill Bill & Pulp Fiction. So i had to see it before the Golden Globes tonight & the Oscars in a month or so. And i'm glad i did!!
I absolutely loved this movie! It's a good thing i didn't read Hungry 101's review since it gave away the ending, which i must have watched a dozen times already! I watched the movie friday evening and watched it again last night! I found it that good!!!
I still remember the late 60's and early 70's so the fact the story occurs in the 60's made it very appealing to me. I love nostalgic movies & tv shows that are well made. This is why Mad Men remains one of my all-time favorite tv series. YOU FELT LIKE YOU WERE BACK IN THE 60'S!!
The same goes with this movie. I love old classic cars and there are so many old cars from the 60's in that movie! The clothes were all a throwback to the 60's and same thing with the movie business back then. I still remember watching old tv shows like Mannix, the FBI and Wanted: Dead or Alive! I also enjoyed cameos of actors portraying the likes of Steve McQueen, Sam Wanamaker, Connie Stevens, Michelle Philips and Mama Cass. And of course, Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring & so many others....including the hippie girls under Charles Manson's spell.
The Jay Sebring character got a lot of time in the movie. Everyone who saw the movie 'Shampoo' must know that the character portrayed by Warren Beatty was in fact the late Jay Sebring, who was killed alongside Shannon Tate. The casting for this movie was spot-on: DeCaprio & Pitt as the main two characters, Margot Robbie as Shannon Tate, the actors portraying Sebring, Folger, Frykowski, Tex Watson and the Mansion girls. The actor portraying Bruce Lee looked just like Bruce Lee!! I loved the many cameos....from Kurt Russell to Al Pacino to Damian Lewis in the McQueen role. It was great!
The best parts for me mostly involved DiCaprio & Pitt: first when DiCaprio made appearances in tv shows like The FBI and then in that western pilot where he brilliantly played the bad guy. And then Brad Pitt when he showed up at the western ranch where Manson's hippies resided. I loved it!!! And of course the brilliant ending: i laughed and cheered so much i kept on rewinding the movie and watching that scene again and again!!
I understand why Tarentino showed the Sharron Tate character as much as he did. Were it not for her the Manson murders never would have attracted that much national (and international) attention. Other than a few movies she was in (Valley of the Dolls, Matt Helm, etc) not much was known about her other than the fact she was married to one of the most popular movie directors (Roman Polanski) at the time. But Tarentino gave her a personality in the movie and gave us a glimpse of the person she was before she died tragically. She was beautiful, she loved life and was loved by many. There's no doubt she likely would have become a big movie star had she not been murdered.
I also enjoyed the Al Pacino character and how he explained to DeCaprio that his career was on the downturn since after his popular tv series was cancelled he was now stuck appearing in numerous tv shows where he was now always the bad guy and always getting beat up in fights in those tv shows. That's how once popular movie stars end up when their acting career starts to fade. I had never looked at it this way but thinking about it made me see how true that was.
The main characters portrayed by DiCaprio & Pitt are based on a mix of different real-life characters. DiCaprio the actor may be Burt Reynolds and his best friend the stuntman may have been a portrayal of Reynold's best friend Hal Needham. But the DiCaprio character's appearance in a popular 50's western tv series was also a portrayal of Steve McQueen from "Wanted: Dead or Alive". His character later ends up making spaghetti westerns for a well-known Italian director. This reminded me of Clint Eastwood leaving Hollywood to make spaghetti westerns for Sergio Leone in the late 60's and early 70's after becoming famous in the old western tv series "Rawhide". Oh yeah....i also loved Pitt's fight with the Bruce Lee character. Hillarious!!
And before i forget: I LOVED THE MUSIC IN THIS MOVIE!
All in all it's a very well made movie with great characters and great actors portraying them. I loved the cars, loved the scenery, the authenticity and the storyline. Hey, i love nostalgia and when a tv show or movie of the 60's/70's is well done i more often than not will give it props and this movie deserves all the props it'll likely get come Golden Globes & Oscars time!

I don't get it: It seems like you absolutely LOVED the movie but you only rated it 4 out of 5. Don't get me wrong, that's a good score, but I was expecting a 5 out of 5 after your rave review. I'm curious about what it would take for you to award a 5, given how much you loved this movie. Are there any that you've seen that you WOULD give a 5 to, and if so which ones?

so he realizes a small percentage of people wont agree with his choice 100% so i believe he factors that into his numbers
,so knowing this if he rates anything a 5 or anyone a 10 you can take that to the bank is he best explaination

I agree with the Doc Holliday rating of 4 out of 5 for OUTIH. I would rate a couple Tarantino films higher - Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards I would give a 4.75 and 4.5, respectively. I would also give Django Unchained a 4 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars for me would be a movie like The Godfather. Godfather II. Gone with the Wind. Ben Hur. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood isn't as good as those movies in my book. But i did absolutely love the movie. So that's why i gave it a 4 out of 5 stars.
