Thanks for adding It Follows, it was in my head and forgot to put it on my list, part of this recent horror revival that ifind so interesting.
Blair Witch Project should be somewhere, i'm not sure if it's the 1st found footage movie or not but it seems to have created a trend.
Here's a link to the Netflix TV show i mentioned before The Kingdom
Great list BTW
I don't think Blair Witch Project was the first found footage movie, I think there were a few before but they certainly didn't have the same popularity. What was ground breaking about Blair Witch is the way that it was marketed.. And this was in an era when the internet was just beginning to be popular, but social media wasn't a thing and it was still possible to pull something like that. I saw Blair Witch a few years after it came out, as a teenager.. and personally I find that there are some found footage films I was much more affected by, but it's still the movie that launched the genre.

I remember when I was younger and a huge horror film fan, found footage films were not really considered to be good and I was often around film bros who tried to find the most disturbing and gruesome movies and would want to prove that ''they're not scared'' lol... And Blair Witch was perceived as a ''bad movie'' when I was in film school, by pretentious French teachers. Tbh the horror genre didn't have a good reputation.

A separate thread would be : which movie have you found the most disturbing or scary.. It's not because it leaves you traumatized that it's necessarily good.

"Yoroi: Samurai Zombie", while outwardly appearing as a shlocked-up B-movie, managed to leave me emotionally devastated with its ending. Finding a version that is both uncut and with intelligible subtitles might be tricky, it's either one or the other.

John Carpenter’s The Thing!

So few movies of that era have aged as graciously as that masterpiece.
Agreed.. this movie really left a big imprint on my mind.

This is a legit list with some deep cuts.

Creep is so underrated. Peachfuzz is my pfp on some other apps.

If you love found footage, I recommend rec and rec 2 if you haven’t seen them.

Not found footage, but from your list I think you’d like Susperia, original and remake, and From Beyond.

Hey Luna, did you read the original novella by John W Campbell entitled, 'Who goes there?' Carpenter's film is actually closer in spirit to this original story than the great Howard Hawk's film, The Thing (1951).

I have seen all of these! I thought Rec 2 was actually better than the first one. I have watched Suspiria multiple times. :)

According 1st found footage horror movie would be Cannibal Holocaust, could be true
It's not a found footage movie from what I remember, it's a mockumentary. They are different things. I like both genres.. they are similar. "This is spinal tap" is a classic mockumentary but not a horror film. :) for some reason this genre is less popular now. There's been a revival of found footage that's internet themed with people video chatting.. I've seen a couple like this.

No I have not read it!

It's a found footage of a mockumentary if you like but yes, the whole concept of the movie is based on the footage thay found of the explorers after they were killed. It's not a "shaky camera" kind of movie but still.

My ultimate soft spot will always be Halloween 2, i was around 12 when i saw that movie and i guess it left a mark. To this day now being 54 i still very much love this movie and find it better than the first Halloween.

My social/ dating life :)

serious horror movies:
The Exorcist
The Omen
The Others
28 days later
Salem's Lot
Alien
Midsommar
Hereditary

Special mention:
Threads --> a 1984 apocalyptic anti-war TV drama... this is likely the scariest of all, as it was a scientifically accurate (based on the knowledge of the time) to the economic, social, and environmental consequences of a full, gloves off, nuclear war
it is actually available for free in Youtube, and if you can endure the boring first 30 minutes, it gets scary afterwards

light and/ or masturbation helpers for teenagers -- those with some soft porn / erotic component
- Some Hammer films
- Most Friday 13
- Most Night of the Living death

Night of the Living death
Do you mean "Return of the Living dead" series?
In the 1st one there's this "classic" scene

Those movies, like the Friday the 13th franchise belong more in the "nostalgic" folder than in the "greatest horror movies", i enjoy watching them from time to time cause of what they remind me of, but they are not objectively great horror movies. :)
