I was listening to the Beatles Channel on Sirius today and they mentioned that Paul McCartney plays drums on "Back In the USSR" which I never knew. I guess Ringo was excused on this song- it's just John, Paul and George with Ringo left out of the session. The DJ also mentioned McCartney played drums and all other instruments on "Jet", also posted below. Do you guys detect a difference in the drumming style on "Back In The USSR"? The song is one the Beatles parody songs written as a parody of "Back In The USA" by Chuck Berry and "California Girls" by the Beach Boys:
Another song in frequent rotation on the Beatles channel is John Lennon's "Dear Prudence", written at the Mahareshi's meditation retreat in India about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence Farrow, then 20 years old and hot, who would never come out of her room due to being self absorbed with meditation. I saw U2 in Yankee Stadium in 1992. That was one of the more memorable tours they ever did, I think Mysterious Ways was on the album they were touring to promote at that time. Achtung Baby or Zooroopa which may have been 1993. I remember the stage was set up in centerfield of Yankee Stadium and we were sitting in the Upper Deck. Back in those days the Yankee Stadium train didn't exist so we drove and parked in the garage and the traffic coming in and out was nightmarish. I think the advent of the Yankee Stadium train did wonders to lighten up local traffic issues.
"Let's Live For Today", is a song that was originally written and performed by the Rokes and released in Italy and was later redone by the Grass Roots in 1967 into a smash hit. The song is intriguing for a couple of reasons, first I think it stands musically and lyrically as an anthemic song of the 1960s counterculture movement, and second the lead guitar by non Grass Roots member P.F. Sloan, who was actually their producer, is very interesting and different sounding to me than anything that was being done at that time. Yet I think the Sloan lead guitar drives the song and gives it a European feel. Which isn't surprising since the song has Italian origins:

Although I am probably not as big a U2 fan as you are, I can guarantee you I heard of them before you did. In 1980-81 when they were unknown, they came to the United States and toured heavily in Boston music clubs. The reason why is their management identified that Boston has one of if not the largest Irish population of any large US city. It's also closest to Ireland LOL. At that time an older friend of mine started attending dental school in Boston and invited me and his brother - my high school classmate at the time- to stay with him for a week. It was the summer of 1981, and U2 had finished their first tour playing smaller clubs in Boston. We all heard about it from him. This was their big hit that emerged during that time:

Paul is a decent drummer and guitar player too. I read Paul drums on USSR cuz Ringo stormed out since he could not nail the drum part to Paul' s liking. Paul also drums on The Ballad of John &Yoko since Ringo was off making a movie. Paul also plays lead guitar I think on Taxman, Ticket to Ride, Paperback Writer and Good Morning. All are among my fave Beatles songs.
I didn't hear that story but I did hear that Paul had a rep as a perfectionist in the studio so it certainly seems plausible. I do find the drums sound different on USSR than other Beatles songs.
EB good one!!! I probably got on the U2 band wagon in 83 or 84, the start of my party years!!! I loved them. Sen, I was at the same concert in 87, great show!!! I see they are still popular and the millennials are really into them but I had to jump off the band wagon after the Joshua Tree album. Joshua Tree songs and before I love them, anything after I couldn't care less.
