Why don't we hear people complaining about all the marginal players that the Habs have?

Because they aren't paid 3-4 million dollars a year? Furthermore you can't just assign value to players by using points.

Begin is a 4th line player. He isn't there to score goals. He's there to hit, forecheck, and generally provide a "spark". And he does that well. Plus, he missed over 30 games this year due to injuries.

Ryder is a streaky player who will give you 25-30 goals a year. He now has 23. He's giving the Habs exactly what is expected of him.

Bonk. Probably overpaid but was one of the Habs best players before he got sick/injured. He's great on faceoffs and and excellent defensive player. Last time the Leafs played here, Meurice had to dismantle the Sundin line because the Bonk line totally shut them down. Note that you didn't see that happen last night. Simply because Bonk wasn't there.

Perezogin? Give me a break. It's only his second season. Just give him some time. Murray is there for the same reason Laraque, Peters and other "enforcers" are there.

There's more to hockey than just scoring goals...

Kovalev? Everybody knows he only plays when he feels like it. He might be useful in the playoffs if the Habs make it, but that's a hell of a price to pay for a guy with an attitude and work ethics problems.

Samsonov is useless. I'd bench that whiner for the rest of the year.

Souray, Samsonov and Kovalev will be gone next year. Habs should concentrate on signing Markov and let the young players develop. And with those 3 players gone, you've got enough $$$ to try and sign an impact player like Brière or Datsyuk.

Halak was great last night against Boston :D and Latendresse scoring the only goal needed for a Habs win. With the way the team is playing, Carbo will keep them winning, I am confident the Habs will make into 8th spot for the playoffs – after that, anything can happen (look at Edmonton last year, they also finished in 8th)

Yes, by all means start planning the parade - the Habs just beat two fantastic teams, the Laughs and the Baby Cubs.

Must confess I'm not a fan of Koivu though, in all fairness, his $4.75M annual salary is a bargain compared to what the Leafs are paying Mats Sundin: $7.6M! No one will dispute that, historically, Sundin is a much better player than Koivu. On the other hand, if one compares this year's stat, there's not enough of a difference between the two players to justify a $2.85M salary gap. ($2.85M can get you Islander's Michael York, for one)

Which makes discussing anything related to the Habs with your useless. You should have said that earlier, I woudn't have wasted my time responding. :)

Not confident that the Habs will make the playoffs but I acknowledge the mathematical possibilities. The (most difficult) last week of March (vs. Rangers, Senators, Sabres) will be decisive. I'm not a betting man but if I were, I'd put my money on the Canes to clinch the 8th spot.

Closet Leafs fans are better off hiding deep inside the closet. While Leafs fans have no Cup to cheer about since 1967, our Habs have won 10. That's probably why so many disenchanted leafs fans have turned into Habs bashers: cheering for the entire league -vs- the Canadien is often a symptom of Laughs retentiveness.

Looking at both current teams rosters, I don't see the Leafs being anywhere closer to winning a cup than Montreal.

Who is this Montana guy who sounds like a Yankee fan? Excuse me, but the hapless Habs (or is it habless Haps) haven't won dogshit since the last millenium while teams from where they can't grow ice in January dance on their grave.

Die-hard Leafs fans like the Doc don't live in the past, unlike the naive Habs fans who constantly refer to the Leafs' last cup win back in 1967 whenever they run out of intelligent things to say. By the way...who did the Leafs beat that year to win the cup?
Habs present and near future are just about as mediocre as most NHL teams, Leafs included. At least Montreal gave me a good dozen occasions to celebrate. As for the Laughs, besides the days of Dave Keon, Darryl Sittler's 6-goals night vs. the Rangers and a few irresolute playoffs runs, Toronto fans have really nothing to write home about. :p 1967 Cup was won -vs- Montreal: every dog has its day.

1967 Cup was won -vs- Montreal:

And then the Habs went on to win 8 in the next 12 years while the Leafs have never even made it to the finals again. I guess that's why Leafs fans don't live in the past. It isn't any better than the present.:D

let's not forget that until 1967, there were only 6 teams in the NHL.

That explains how the Leafs were able to win at all back then. They haven't made it to one final series since expansion. You're making my arguement for me, Doc! For the Leafs, the 'new NHL' started in 1968 and they've never been up to the task.:)

If the Habs didn't have territorial rights to all of those great french-canadian players in those years (up to 1970), they likely would never have won all of those cups. They had an unfair advantage over other teams & let's not forget that until 1967, there were only 6 teams in the NHL.
Hey, it was a great rule. Worked for us. Well at least we still have all the beautiful women, can't take that away from us:)

As i predicted, all the whiners who were whining that the Habs were the worse team in hockey (they might actually have a point! lol) now are back on the bandwagon & fantasizing about making the playoffs (no chance!) & one day winning the Stanley Cup....unless these guys are presently under 5 years old, it won't happen in their lifetimes! :D

Right you are Doc. I've been saying this for years and have said it many times on the various hockey threads here.

Meanwhile this particular thread seems to have degenerated into a battle of Leaf defenders/Hab bashers and Hab defenders/Leaf bashers. Well, each camp has it HALF right - namely the bashing half. Both teams suck, both teams have sucked for many years, and both teams will continue to suck for many more years. I will be shocked if either ever again wins a Cup in my lifetime. (Wowee, the Habs beat the Baby Cubs again tonight. Big deal - the Bruins are absolutely woeful: another team that no longer belongs in the NHL. In fact, if such a thing is possible, the Bruins are even worse than Montreal and Toronto)

The deal is the Habs have kept their slim chances of making the playoffs alive. Either Canes or Isles are more likely to clinch the 8th spot IMO but we never know. As for the Leafs, their upcoming two-games serie vs. the Sabres will throw them out of contention.

About tonight's games, the Bruins started off as they'd blow the Habs out of the arena before collapsing in the 3rd period. Such meltdown is typical of Bruins performance in the late stage of the game as their season 3rd period GF/GA ratio of 0.57:1.00 (scored 54, allowed 94) indicates.

What an amazing come from behind win for the Habs tonight - 5 unanswered goals !!! and a great confidence booster  Carbo has them playing really well. I see Montreal winning all their remaining games and finishing in 7th or 8th spot! :D Halak should get all the remaining starts as Abby has looked more like "Red Light" Racicot of late
