I totally agree with you on this subject.

Leafs are indeed Canada's team. No 'ifs' and 'buts' about that. And, Montreal is Quebec's team now that the Nordiques packed their bags & moved to Denver.

Once again:
The Leafs=Canada's team
The Glorias=Quebec's team

There are lots of ''if'' and ''buts''.
I don't beleiev there are as many Laughs fans outside of greater Toronto area than there are Habs, just watch the games they play in westwern Canada and Ottawa, heck even Toronto has many Habs fans. And they don't come from Montreal by the busload unlike those from Toronto.

Even when the Nords were around the Habs still ruled in Quebec.

Sorry to disagree with you, but the Leafs are indeed Canada's team and the tv ratings prove it. As for the Glorias, they're Quebec's team.

Tv ratings of course, they have CBC and Tsn to cover their asses.
Make a survey from coast to coast and see the results.

Of course the Leafs get the ratings. They are the only team to get coast to coast coverage in primetime HNiC broadcasts. The only time the Habs get on is when they play the Leafs. Of course that will change once the playoffs start as the Habs will be in primetime while the Leafs are on the golf course. What a beating they got tonight! 7-2 Ouch!:D

PS: I doubt that fans in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver think that the Leafs are Canada's team either.

Oh shit, "Canada's team" (chuckle chuckle) just got humiliated again. I'm sooooooooooo embarrassed as a proud Canadian - NOT! They sure as hell are not MY team, thank the lord!

The Habs legacy dosen't end at the canadian borders, where they are #1.
In europe, especially east europe, they are the most popular team.

Where & how do you base your facts on? This is the first time i've ever heard this ridiculous statement.

On one other note, i'm even surprised that the Glorias are Quebec's favorite team. Since the few french-canadian players on that team are marginal players playing secondary roles on a team comprised of a mostly European element, why would Quebecers cheer for that team? Actually, now that i think about it, i'm realizing that your statement isn't as far-fetched as i thought it was. It's all starting to make sense now.

Oh yeah?
Go and ask most eastern european players in the leauge and ask them wich was their vavorite team in the NHL.
You can bet you Laughs panties that the majority would say the Habs,NOT the Laughs.
Open your ears and eyes and stop living in your sorry maple loaf world where everything seems to be blue and white.
The Habs did a tour of Europe a few years ago and they were very popular. Each time the NHL talks about organising a european promotion tour ,the european request that the Habs be part of it,NOT your underachiving zeros.

You only have to go as far as Russia, the best hockey nation after Canada, to see the respect and love that true hockey fans have for the Habs. When Tretiak was in Montreal recently he said that Montreal was the greatest hockey team in history and the best hockey city in the world. That's good enough for me.

I think Doc's patients may have to sit in the chair without any anaesthetics. It appears he has personally inhaled all the nitrous oxide. I hope there are no root canals scheduled.

It's clear that the Habs are the most beloved team, both within our borders and outside Canada  . Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are regarded as a joke ( 40 years without so much as a sniff of the SC finals, moronic owners like Harold Ballard ... etc ...). :D

Easy to understand: soccer fans here are walking around wearing Juventus, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Brazil national team, etc... jerseys, all teams with a winning tradition to which they identify. My guess is it must work the same way for European hockey fans.

His - way too long - tenure was catastrophic (beyond Houlian proportions) not only in terms of team performance but also in terms of public perception: Leafs are a risible organization by definition. It will take way more than a few irresolute runs through the playoffs to change that perception.

You seem to forget that in 1993 (the last year the Glorias won the cup), Canada's team (the Leafs, of course) were only 1 goal away from participating in the Stanley Cup finals.

doesn't change the fact: no Stanley Cup final appearances in 40 years! :D

WOW now there's something to be proud of

Thats right Laugh fans 14 years ago you almost made it to the Cup Finals - they keep the bar set pretty low for you guys don't they.

I don't recall every reading this. By the way, he was also in Toronto several times in the last few years & he said the same thing about the hockey team & the city. Now, THAT is good enough for me.

No he did not! You just completly made that up

Tretiak actually flew into Montreal just for the retirement of Ken Dryden's number. He flew out the next day, back to Russia. It shows the respect he has both for Dryden and the Canadiens to make such a long return trip in such a short time frame.

You seem to forget that in 1993 (the last year the Glorias won the cup), Canada's team (the Leafs, of course) were only 1 goal away from participating in the Stanley Cup finals.

But the fact remains that they didn't get there. Just like they won't make the playoffs this year. So close and yet so far.

Don't be mean to Leaf fans! ;) They are very proud of this accomplishment :D Sucks to be a Toronto fan - they’re team hasn’t done anything worth celebrating in the last 40 years – so the year they went all the way to within one goal of the finals makes up for all those Stanley Cup parades they were having in Montreal :D

Damn...the Leafs needed overtime to beat the Flyers! And the Islanders beat the Rangers. Leafs will get destroyed by the Islanders on Thursday night.

With the Habs winning tonight and the Leafs pulling off an O.T. win it looks like it might come down to putup or shutup on Saturday night. By the way, it was announced tonight that the habs set the league attendance record, again.

Excerpt:

... "The Bruins planned to start Hannu Toivonen in goal after he was recalled Monday from Providence of the AHL. It is a second straight game Montreal was to face a backup goalie after Buffalo started Ty Conklin in a 4-3 Montreal win on Saturday night.

"It doesn't matter to us who is in net," said Carbonneau. "Even if Jesus is in net, we'll try to beat him.""

Habs win 2-0; guess Boston should have started Jesus instead.

As it dawned upon me while i was looking in my medicine cabinet to find something to keep me awake during the hockey game on RDS, i began to wonder:

1) Do people actually pay money to watch this type of garbage hockey?

2) Is there a team other than the NJ Devils that is as boring to watch as the Habs?

3) If the Habs would actually have a decent coach such as Paul Maurice, they could actually have a decent team & be able to contend in the playoffs. Carbonneau is a terrible coach & he'll look foolish in the playoffs & he'll get outcoached in every game (if they do make the playoffs, that is).

Well, just a few thoughts.....just found what i was looking for to be able to watch my next Habs game.

And yet you're a Leafs fan - the only team that regularly has 15,000 ghosts attend their games.
