Chez Tousignant (hot dogs and hamburgers) near Jean Talon Market


that's a new place though, purposely styled to look retro. I believe they do smash style burgers though. they do look good but i've stayed away so far, preferring to focus on places that have endured.

Montreal Pool Room hot dogs are way too mushy for my tastes. No snap — I've had better dogs in NYC (Nathan's, Sabrett's), Chicago (Vienna Beef) and various Latin dogs (Mexico, Colombia).

I understand it's what one grows up with. MPR fans, do dogs outside of Montreal just taste too gristley to you?

I'd attribute the snap to more the casing. natural casing has the distinct snap. once past that, the meat emulsion itself, can be more heavy weighted (or not = mushy) That Costcos dog being sold by the pack has been a hidden gem for over a decade. It's a top quality hotdog of beef, smokey, garlic, and density. Mushy (easy to chew) meat emulsions come from greater water content, air, fillers, at the expense of... protein. It's the high degree of sodium and ice in the emulsion process that makes this processed magic work.

It's like how peanut butter has peanut oil taken out of it and sold off for profit, and palm oil placed in place of it, oh and a here ya go. Talk about decades of food robbery.

It's no wonder the ideal cooking medium of a steamie... is wet. If it were griddle top grilled, it'd likely shrink before long and show its true colours. A more premium HD can handle the heat, no pun intended.

I thought the original was on rue Lafleur in Lasalle. Nevertheless, they are very good I agree. I love the Michigan with cheese steamies.

I also like the Pool Hall dogs. Been going there for years. Pretty good Poutine as well.

My favorite is probably at Resto Gregoire in Ville Mercier, next to Chateauguay. They have been around for almost 80 years, starting out of a trailer and then little highway shack. Everything is great there.

good point, the steamies may be mushier because they're steamed than the ones off the griddle. But NYC water dogs still have a better snap than steamies.

how are the dogs at Gibeau Orange Julep? I usually get a burger since I thought if MPR's hot dogs were supposed to be the city's best, I'd be even more disappointed by the dogs there.

In Montreal it has to be the Pool Room but I rarely venture downtown anymore. The best hot dogs I've ever had are Nathan's cony island dogs. Whenever I'm in the US I find a store and buy 5 dozen hot dogs and have them at home, they are great.

Not a steamie, but Wilensky's top with cheese is fairly unknown and definitly worth the mention.
Tasty beef sausage wrapped in an onion encrustred bun with a slice of swiss cheese and mustard is heavenly.

Opened Dec 2015, relatively new, but damn good burgers and dogs (fries a tad sweet) :)
