From my trips so far, the Marriott Chateau Champlain is my favorite so far ... mainly because it had its own entrance to the Metro.

I like the hotel as well, but hate the parking lot - you have to twist and turn a lot before you can park....however, it's cheaper than at other hotels.

Haven't you guys ever heard of Priceline & Hotwire??? I was in town last weekend and got the Hyatt for $51. A friend of mine stayed at the Omni and got it for $61.

I was talking specifically about the price of parking. Until EB set me straight recently, I thought you could only use Priceline if you lived in the US. I intend to use it the next time I'm in Montreal.

I regret not including St. Sulpice in the main poll, and I promise to tally all of the "write in votes" that it and the Nelligan got before declaring a poll winner.

In the main poll, looks like a 3 horse race now between the Vogue, Hyatt and cult favorite Hotel de la Montagne.

MERB Readers,

The poll closes tomorrow and there is still no clear winner for the HIGHLY COVETED MERB Reader's Choice Award, the prestige of which resounds within the hotel industry. This is an important vote, and I urge all of you to cast your vote before the poll closes!

gtadick, if one were to follow your logic there could be 3 or 4 different hotel polls, one for each star level, with a lot of attendant bickering over which hotels should be inserted into which star levels. The fact is that even Hotwire and Priceline differ over the star levels of the same hotels.

However, the bottom line is that the MERB readers do not want to be inundated with multiple polls and numerous choices. They want the bottom line, they want to know which are the best hotels available on the online travel services. So this poll is simply a case of giving the people what they want.

btyger,

You did vote. I have already stated that I am counting write-in votes, of which St. Sulpice and Le Nelligan have had many. The poll has a maximum of 10 options so it was impossible for me to include every hotel that might be considered. I have explained why I included the hotels that I did.

Write-in votes are encouraged, and I will tally them up after the poll closes and also declare the winner of the "write in" category, assuming that it is not the overall winner as well.

My 2 favorites are St.Sulpice & Hotel Nelligan (http://www.hotelnelligan.com/ http://www.lesaintsulpice.com/) both in Old Montreal.

Although I do live here I have stayed in both places numerous times and found the service and atmosphere to be top shelf. Note to any intersted tourists, Nelligan has a beautiful rooftop terrace that is great for summertime 5 a 7 (happy hour here in Quebec) - it fills up quick so go early if you can (if you are staying at the hotel just tell the concierge that you want a table for you and a guest and he will hook you up - tip recommended)

For purposes of the coveted "MERB readers choice" award I give Nelligan the nod over St.Sulpice (rooftop terrace is that good)

Write-In Category

MERB Readers,

As I have discussed above, there will be two winners of the highly coveted "MERB Reader's Choice Award" for favorite hotel, one for the winner of the main poll, and one for the winner of the write-in category.

Based on your posts, here is the current vote in the write-in category:

St. Sulpice 5
Nelligan 4
Clarion 2
Chablis 1
Chateau Versailles 1
Le Germain 1
Marriott Chateau Champlain 1
Auberge des Gouverneurs 1

I have also devised a qualifying formula, similar to what is used in the Masters Golf Tournament, to determine which hotels will qualify for the 2007 MERB Reader's choice poll.

Under the qualifying formula, the top 7 finishers in the main poll and the top 3 finishers in the write-in category will be in the main poll for 2007. That means that the bottom 3 finishers in the main poll will simply be dropped from next year's poll due to a lack of support from the MERB Readers.

Nothing has been decided yet in either the main poll or the write-in category. Please get to the poll, which closes tomorrow night, and vote, or write in your alternative choice! I also urge the SPs reading the Board to register and vote so that their opinions are also heard.

May the best hotels win!

EB: You have not yet indicated what the top prize will consist of - perhaps the winner will get the unparalleled honour of hanging in their lobby a life-sized picture of the Beav in his underwear ???!!! :D

chefplus,

The winners get to declare themselves the winners of the highly coveted "2006 MERB Reader's Choice Award" for favorite hotel in Montreal. There is no more prestigious industry wide award. Just like when a restaurant wins a reader's choice award and you will see it the restaurant's front window, so too will the winning hotel be able to advertise its win as the reader's choice here.

Ok,

I got my vote in before the deadline I think. I've only stayed at 2 of the hotels in the running, the Omni and the Hyatt. With that limited experience I am forced to choose the Omni. I do agree with what others have said on here about it being in need of a touch up, I does not compare well against other Omni properties I have stayed in before. However the rooms are large and on higher floors the view is quite nice. But, the main reason I chose it over the Hyatt is that the staff of the Omni treated me very well, even though I was a Priceline customer paying $60US a night.

A little of topic, but I also have to agree with other posters I have seen here. The worst hotel I've had the displeasure of staying in was the DAYS HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTRE on Guy St. What a dump, I actually cancelled my incall and did an outcall when I saw the quality of my lodgings. I was too embarassed to have a lady visit me there.

Sox,

Thanks for your input. I have stayed at 7 of the 10 hotels in the main poll, but I am going to refrain from commenting on any specific hotel, or the hotel I voted for, until after the poll closes.

At this point it is still a horse race, both in the main poll and in the write in category. Crucial awards are at stake! The poll will close at 10:02 p.m. tomorrow, 4-26-06, so there is still time to vote and have your say.

I thought it was obvious that you voted for the Vogue.

Where in this thread did I say who I voted for?

I think it was in another thread that you were singing praises about the Vogue; then again, maybe I was wrong.

BTW why is Ollie concerned about security cameras there ???

Somewhere along in this thread someone had mentioned loft-style apartments available near this hotel down in Old Montreal. I went to check out their website (there's a separate one for the apartments as opposed to the hotel itself) and I was surprised. Some of these rooms look fantastic! And the prices, especially in the off-season, are reasonable considering what you get for the price.

Here's the link to the website - go check out the pictures :

Definitely a place to consider when you are entertaining to impress. Wife or GF or SO or SP.

Hell, if you were in town on business you could even invite clients over to your place for cocktails to impress them, too.

Hey MERBies,

The poll is still open for about 9 more hours (until 10:02 p.m.), and still nothing has been decided in either the main poll or the write in category. Get out and vote! The winners will be announced later tonight, as will my thoughts on this poll.

And the Winners Are.......................................

Thanks to all the MERB readers for contributing to this poll. The moment you have all been waiting for has now arrived.

We have two winners of the first annual MERB Reader’s Choice Favorite Hotel Award. They are:

Winner, Main Poll: Hotel de la Montagne
Winner, Write-Ins: St. Sulpice

Congratulations to these hotels and their staffs for bringing joy and comfort to the MERB readers.

Now, some thoughts on my poll.

First, the top 3 write in vote getters, St. Sulpice, Le Nelligan, and Clarion Suites (de Maissoneuve) have now qualified for the main poll in 2007.

Conversely, the bottom 3 in the main poll, the Sheraton, Holiday Inn Express, and Sofitel, will be dismissed from the main poll for 2007 and will only regain eligibility based on write in votes.

For those who are curious, I have stayed as an overnight guest in 7 of the 10 hotels in the main poll: The Vogue, The Omni, Hilton Bonaventure, Sofitel, Hyatt, Sheraton, and the Delta. I am also intimately familiar with the poll winner, Hotel de la Montagne, as I have attended public and private parties there and used its facilities on many occasions. As previously noted, I added this hotel based on its strong cult status, and it won the poll with a late surge of votes to edge the hotel I voted for, the Vogue.

When I started the poll I believed the Vogue would win, because it is a superior hotel in all respects and also extremely well located. However, I also understood that it has a somewhat SP-unfriendly policy with its requirement that guests be met on the second floor. I felt that this would cause the Vogue to lose some votes, but not enough to lose the poll as it is IMHO the best pure hotel. I was wrong, as the Vogue was nipped at the wire and finished second.

I underestimated the cult status that Hotel de la Montagne has attained among the hobbyist community. It is right across the street from the Vogue so its location is equally excellent, but its unique atmosphere and rooftop pool and bar obviously resonated strongly with many voters.

The most disappointing performer in the poll had to be the Sofitel, which was dead last with 2 votes. I never would have guessed that it would be relegated to qualifier status in 2007, but that is the lot that it has earned with its horrendously poor performance in the poll.

Thanks again to all of you for contributing to this poll and these awards.
