EB,

Thanks for one of the best and most helpful polls I have seen posted.

I was one of the votes for the winner, Hotel de la Montangue. I just checked out of their hotel yesterday and am now back in Los Angeles.

Got a great deal from their website at only $125 CAD with King Bed on 15th floor with balcony facing downtown (east).

I checked out the Vogue across the street which was cool but not worth at least double the price. I was thinking "Best Value" when I voted.

I am now planning a trip 4th of July week during the Jazz Festival. Trying to find the best value during this most popular week in Montreal.

EB, thanks again for a poll that gives great info for our travels.

Best Lover

Best Lover,

I have been in Montreal for the Jazz Festival every year since 2002, usually staying at the Hyatt which is right in the middle of the action. The Hyatt is probably the best value if you can get it on Priceline for under $60(US), using the bidding method. During Jazz Festival, rue St. Catherine gets shut down in the stretch between Bleury and St. Laurent (the Hyatt is in the middle of this stretch), and many or most of the musicians who play stay at the Hyatt. The other 3 star hotels on PL at this time appear to be the Delta on President Kennedy, Novotel (more centrally located in the downtown, on rue de la Montagne near Bell Centre), and Holiday Inn Select which is in Chinatown. The Novotel has an elevator restriction after 6:00 p.m. and is a bit antiquated, and the Holiday Inn Select is acceptable but certainly not as good as either the Hyatt or the Delta which are the two best hotels in the PL 3 star category. If you book now, my guess is you will be able to get one of these four hotels for under $60(US)/night.

The Vogue can be had on Hotwire for around $100(US), I have done it in the past, and it is worth it at that price. I have heard that the other 4.5 star option on Hotwire at this time is the Intercontinental, which is not as nice as the Vogue is.

My favorite Jazz festival moment remains the playing of the Hawaii 5-0 theme song on the main stage in 2003.

Best Lover,

Keep your eyes on BFT, www.biddingfortravel.com

Right now the 4 stars on Priceline look like the best value. The Omni and Intercontinental have been had for mid $60s (US) in recent weeks, and one poster also reported getting the Omni for $61 on PL which is a serious deal. The 3 stars have been all over the lot, but the Delta was apparently had for $45 per night recently, a great price considering you are offered an upgraded premium room for only $15 per night extra (I can't recall if they call it executive or premium but it's the $15 upgrade and you want to take it because you get a bigger room with a balcony). I suspect that prices will go up for Jazz Festival, but keep in mind every year between 2002 and 2005 I got the Hyatt on Priceline for between $52 and $57/night during the Jazz Festival, bidding approximately one month in advance of the event every year. Now that the US dollar has been devalued, the more likely bidding range will be $55 to $60 or perhaps higher.

Thanks EB for the recommendations.

Bidding kinda scares me as I like to be able to choose the hotel and location. Maybe I am picky especially with the location since I like to walk everywhere. I would hate to make a bid and be stuck with a hotel that I don't want to stay at. If I could bid and pick from a few hotels I might try that sometime.

Hotel de la Montagne recommended Novotel (as did you) so I just booked my room for the Jazz Festival. I don't like the elevator restriction though that you mentioned.

Their Standard King is sold out so was going to book the upgrade Novation King which are renovated rooms from last year. I was ready to book and asked out of curiosity what the Executive King rate is and she said she would give it to me for the same rate. The Executive has 32" LCD, free local calls, cordless phones, and of course bigger rooms. Also it's located right on Rue Montagne so great location.

EB, I have been to Montreal many times now but never for the Jazz Festival which my SP friends always tell me is awesome. If you have a few extra minutes would you mind starting a new thread and give us merbites some "Jazz Festival Recommendations"?

Merci,
BL

Best Lover,

It would be best to first check the official Jazz Festival Website:

http://www.montrealjazzfest.com/

If you go to the main page, there is a large picture of the crowd at the Place-des-Arts directly across from the Hyatt which is the center of the action and where I like to hang. This is where some of the free outdoor concerts take place. There is usually a main stage set up at the corner of Jeanne Mance and St. Catherine and then some satellite stages are set up in the surrounding areas.

To me the best place to be during the Jazz festival is the Hyatt, but the Novotel is away from the crowds yet you still have the central downtown location. I am not sure you will like the Novotel as much as HDLM, and as I said previously the Hyatt and Delta are better hotels in the Priceline 3 star category, but if you got an upgraded room it might not be too bad. You will have to deal with the elevator restriction which I believe takes effect at 6:00 p.m.

It depends on where your room is, and in most cases should not be an issue. If the room is on the south side of the hotel you will not hear a thing, and if you are on a higher floor you won't hear a thing. Remember that the Hyatt's lobby is on the 6th floor of the Complex Desjardins, so you are already well above street level even on the lower floors, and the noise gets more muffled the higher up you go. I don't recall ever having noise issues in a room at the Hyatt, either during Jazz Festival or at any other time (except internal noise during the room renovations a few years ago). And I have stayed there at least a dozen times or more including during each of the last several Jazz Festivals.

I recently stayed on the 4th floor of the Omni in a room facing Sherbrooke St. and it was noisier than any room I can ever remember staying in. From what I understand, traffic noise goes away 12th floor and up. That's why if you stay in a hotel on a busy street like the Omni on Sherbrooke, you should always try to get a room above the 12th floor or on the south side, facing the downtown and away from Sherbrooke Street.

Chateau Versailles

Planning a week in July and normally I would just stay at the HDLM but I have always wanted to try Chateau Versailles on Sherbrooke (not the Le Meridien Versailles). Anyone know if it is SP friendly? Like the HDLM is SP friendly? Info on any experience would be appreciated.

My third choice is the Hotel Godin as I have never stayed that far east before and wanted to do some exploring on that side of the city. Price is decent now for the week I had in mind.

Do not know if there will be a poll this year,
but once this happens ,will it make any difference to the well informed voters

Sheraton Goes Smoke Free !

Starwood has announced that its Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton hotels in the U.S., Canada, and Caribbean will go smoke free by year's end. More than 300 hotels will be affected by the new policy.

More and more hotels are going smoke free. Even if they haven't totally eliminated smoking rooms many hotels have cut right back on the number available, with an eye on gradually making the move. Although I don't smoke, it is nice to let a guest have that option.

Le Saint Sulpice

I also like Le Saint Sulpice... it's not the cheapest one in Montreal, but it's a great hotel with great service and really comforable rooms. And some rooms have balconies so you can smoke cigarettes outside if you wish. Price is similar to the Hyatt or Hilton if booking directly with each hotel.

Someone managed to resurrect the 2006 Favorite Hotel poll I started (won by Hotel de la Montagne). For everyone`s information, there is a more recent 2007 MERB Reader`s Choice Favorite Hotel Poll which I started (won by the Hyatt), the results of which are here:

https://merb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25627&highlight=favorite+hotel

I would suggest any further posts be made in the more recent thread linked above. I will start a 2008 MERB Readers` Choice Hotel Poll in the spring.
