I am enjoying the current Captcha task prior to logging in. I wonder how many of us are have to go through this exercise. Where are you from and what is your experience?

This is multiple choice. For example, if you are from the States and you log in from the United States and you have to do Captcha you can select that option. If you are in Montreal right now and log in and do not have to do Captcha you can vote for that too or if you are across the pond and you log in what is your experience there?

This is a private poll so the reader will not be able to identify where you are logging in from in case that is important to you to keep this private. If you feel like saying so and relating your experience, while globe trotting then please do.

But don’t you feel that you are less likely to run over a bicyclist or a pedestrian using a crosswalk as a result of greater adeptness at seeing bicycles and crosswalks?

LOL. NO!

By the way I am logging in from the USA and compelled to do CAPTCHA. If I see another fire hydrant I will piss on it worse than any dog ever did. If I see another bridge I might jump off it. If I see another crosswalk I might repaint it. MERB will be responsible for these conducts just like the character in The Clockwork Orange who was conditioned to vomit when he saw violence and, as a result, stopped acting violently.

Is it attempted mind control over Americans?

Come on gentlemen, we (U.S. barbarians) should be grateful that we are still allowed to log in to this forum. Jumping through a number of hoops is probably supposed to keep us in good shape. Can't imagine that the only purpose of this exercise is to piss us off.

Congratulations 2fast2slow, but, what a waste of your 1000th post ;)

If a captcha is what it takes to evade the Google bots, I'm all for it. Threads here should remain private. However, I do not know if that is the purpose or if it is successful.

But what could possibly be the point of serving a CAPTCHA to the same user (meaning the same device at the same IP address) every single time? To make sure that the person has not yet morphed into a bot?

With 30 votes in, the interesting trends are as follows:

1. 100% of MERBites logging in from the United States have to do the Captcha exercise.
2. 100% of MERBites logging in from Canada do not have to do Captcha
3. 2/3's of the MERBites logging in that have participated are from outside of Canada.

I don't know if trend #3 is representative of MERBites as a whole. Maybe you are motivated to do this survey only if you have to put up with the Captcha exercise? However, I heard someone say that 97% of the traffic here is Canadian. That is absolute bullshit.

Those trends are fucking bullshit, as in there is no reason for disparate treatment on an Internet board of members of any one nation. It’s inexcusable. You do the Captcha bullshit with everybody, or nobody. If this is the business model of MERB, then they clearly want to be known as a local board even if the industry and clients which the board is supposedly serving is serving both locals and tourists as their clients.

Other international boards have figured out the bot issues without subjecting their members to the Captcha bullshit. My feeling is that MERB Admin needs to figure out what other boards are doing, including TERB. Just figure it out guys. The message that is being sent is that you can figure this shit out and it’s your business. You are roiling and pissing off the wrong people here.

Over the recent few months, many adult sites, including review forums have been subject to viscous DDOS attacks. Some so severe that it took WEEKS to get the websites back up and running. The origins of these attacks were from countries outside of Canada. CAPTCHA is a small price to pay to keep our forums free from these attacks. Im sure an extra minute of time is worth the security of our forums is it not ?

It most certainly is. I just wasn’t sure if the captcha was an indicator that your mobile device or lap top was already infected. But what your saying is that it’s a security measure

I have to do it but the last two times there were no images, just click on the box.

It doesn't bother me that it's there.

Yes, I appreciate the explanation. I don't like it but I appreciate it. And like Stockton said above, the last two times I didn't have to go through the images.

This reasoning presumes that such DDOS attacks can only come from outside Canada and that nobody within Canada is capable of executing such an attack. Is this really true?

The attacks we stopped originated from abroad. If it starts happening within Canada then we will deal with that as well.

One thing I do not understand. You simply need to save the password from your browser to avoid all this right?

Cheers,

p.s. many of these web sites went behind cloudfare protection to solve the issue of DDOS. Cloudfare must have settings to completely avoid any hosting of your IP in the US.
