Around the corner
I know there's a "Balkani" charcuterie in the Jean Talon market, but I am not familiar with their other stores.

There are two small Eastern European stores on St-Laurent in the Plateau, one Croatian and another Hungarian, and next door there is a bigger store "La Vieille Europe", which is actually a good place to buy coffee beans (they roast them in store.) The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, I followed their advice a few times and they never let me down.
Thanks I know these stores also I have been to all of them although I haven’t been to them in a while.
They are all good deli stores and have many imported goods from these Eastern European countries
With regard to the Balkani stores yes you are correct it is not downtown it is in the Jean Talon market which btw is a great place to shop for all fruits vegetables pretty much any type of groceries a long time ago when I lived in Park Ex I always shopped at the Jean Talon market.
The other Balkani store is on Grand Allee in Brossard on the South Shore.

I recently bought reusable K cups on Amazon so that I can sample various ground coffees. If any of you guys like a dark roast coffee with chocolate tones, I tried one called LavAzza that is very good. Bought it at my local supermarket. Smooth taste for a dark roast. It's an Italian coffee:

Are you sure about Shaugnessy Cafe on Maisonneuve? General Tao?

I tried their coffee and it tasted bitter.

When in Montreal I enjoy a good cup of coffee from Tim Horton's. When all else fails, I've found McDonalds coffee to be a really good substitute when your favorite place is closed.

Same here. And I always have a bag of Tim Horton’s coffee on hand. Driving back to Hoboken/Jersey City from PA last week I actually stopped at the Tim Horton’s in Allentown. Not bad and pretty close to the real deal in Montreal. Recommended.

They have a Tim Hortons in Pennsylvania?

I always had the perception that Tim Hortons was non-existent in the US with exception to border towns.

Same here, although there used to be some in Manhattan. Not sure if they are around anymore. You can get the Tim Horton's K-cups from Costco here in the states to give you that taste of banging a hot quebecois SP from the night before!

Yes, though very limited. Many aren’t that good, but the Tim Hortons in Allentown PA (a little over an hour from me) is very good and it looks like a Montreal Tim Horton’s.

I was underwhelmed by some of the Tim Horton’s in NYC. But Allentown location - very good! Matter of fact, I thought it was better than the TH on Peel

Coffee in downtown:
1. Melyk Cafe Stanley: vanilla, or dark chocolate latte (homemade flavors, not syrup)! The staff are excellent. They care about making you happy and have a great attitude.
2. Cafe Castel, Sherbrooke and Peel: latte, one of the lady baristta"s can draw a bunny in your latte!
3. Cafe Myriad, latte, also a good low price.
4. Cafe Olimpico, Robert-Bourassa near McGill metro, Excellent latte and open late (I think 21:00)
5. Cafe Humble Lion, Sherbrooke near Mansfield. mixed feelings. I like their pumpkin latte, but this shop is extremely expensive and the workers don't seem to care or happy.

I went to Cafe Myriad today actually.

My only complaints with that place is that there's not enough seating, imo

I think any discussion about coffee preferences deserves a mention of how each person may prefer different coffee styles.

Broadly, there are these styles:

1- North-American style drip-coffee. Sometimes referred to as "breakfast" coffee, it is balanced. Critics would say that it is weak and watery. Typified by Tim Hortons, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's McCafé.

2- Italian-style espresso-based coffee. Espresso, cappuccino, and latte in the traditional Italian style, often made with darker roasted beans. The taste can be more bitter due to the presence of robusta coffee beans. Typified by roasters Lavazza, Illy, and (more locally) Café Union. Served by many Montreal cafés in Little Italy and elsewhere. If the café has an Italian-sounding name like "Olimpico", it probably falls in this category or style.

3- 3rd-Wave coffee. Can be prepared in many different typical ways (espresso, drip, French press) and more esoteric ways (Aeropress, Hario V60 dripper, vaccuum, etc.). Focuses on high quality coffee beans that are more lightly roasted. In Montreal, the following cafés fall under this category: Myriade, St-Henri, 49th Parallel, Dispatch, Tunnel, MELK, Crew Collective. These types of cafés emerged after the 2000's and 2010's.

I have a personal preference for sure for these different types of coffee, but I do enjoy any style. Almost any coffee is good coffee, except when it's bad!

Which style are you?

PS: poking fun at the Tim Horton's crowd, here is an interesting talk by author Malcolm Gladwell. He says that most people say that they prefer coffee with a "dark, rich, hearty roast", but what they really prefer is "weak, milky coffee" - yet, they would never admit it:

Cafe Myriad is an excellent value and has great latte. I'm just bored with coffee and like unique flavors. I agree it's crowded, limited seating. Why do students not want to study in the library like they are supposed to LOL.
Try going closer to McGill plenty of seating at Cafe Castel, on Sherbrooke and Peel. It's in the bottom of a hotel. Also excellent coffee. But I really like Melyk Cafe on Stanley. It's a strange location, but cute, the baristas are nice and I always feel so happy when I walk out with my vanilla or dark chocolate latte! (Yeah, I like variety in everything I put into my mouth).
