Carl Lewis not only accepted the gold medal for the 100 yard dash when Ben Johnson, was disqualified, but was hypocritical enough to criticize the winner and Jamaica's testing program when he was a steriod user himself. He took 15 years to come clean.

Hi all
Drug testing is a complicated subject Carl Lewis admitted being tested positive ,he did not admit using banned substances ,it is not the same thing but certainly very controversial http://cypheravenue.com/carl-lewis-please-shut-the-fuck-up/
There a saying that says there is never smoke without fire !But he was never sanctioned so until he admits there is no solid proof !
And results stands even if it makes us unhappy !

He did admit to taking banned substances "accidentally". As the statute of limitations expired on his gold medal three years after the race, his medal stands.

However, even if we suspend belief and accept that his use of steriods was accidental, my point was that he should eliminated from consideration as the world's greatest athlete.

I do agree with your reasoning ,however many high level athletes will not admit "accidentally "using steroids ,they all pretend they are clean until proven lying .
A great athlete Lance Armstrong was caught and denied everything until the end ,its a complicated subject even for scientist so for the fan its definitely not simple

Hi all
An other great athlete that have put a indelible mark on the sport seen swimmer Michael Phelps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Phelpsthe most Olympic goal medal ever by any athletes !
Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medals (18, double the second highest record holders), Olympic gold medals in individual events (11), and Olympic medals in individual events for a male (13). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps won four golds and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete of the Games for the third Olympics in a row
Sadly he does not compete in one of North America most popular sports !But regardless is achievement are unequal by any others.
kind Regards

Jim Brown, a monster legend on the football field and a helluva lacrosse player. Power, speed and agility, not much more you can ask for in an athlete. More recently, Bo Jackson is by far the best overall athlete I have seen, no one even comes close, he could do it all.

Hard to say really. Im a fan of hockey... i love the sport, but i guess when it comes to best athlete, i would choose a fighter before a regular sportive person. But then we could it be? Ali, Tyson, GSP, Silva? I dunno...

Lets say Bruce Lee for what he brough to the world, and how he made martial art movies what they are today. He also brough the Jeet Kune Do and was an acomplished fighter.

I forgot 2 of my favs while growing up, Bobby Orr (an argument can be made that he dominated like no other, changed his game more than any other athlete and did it from a completely unexpected position. Don't forget, he won 2 scoring championships as a defenseman!!!!!)

Willy Mays- while he was growing up baseball was his 3rd best sport!!!!!!!!

Google "greatest athlete of all time"--there are several lists

Gents,

What about Bobby Hull

BookerL

Bobby Hull? Not to put down hockey skills or any extremely specialized skill in any sports like hitting a slap shot, throwing a world class cutter, or kicking the longest field goals. I don't see how such highly expert but narrow specialized skills can make anyone fit the "greatest athlete" label. I mean what else could Hull, Rivera or Vinatieri do that makes them generally better than others with non-comparative skills. It simply does not work in my opinion. Skating on ice and handling a puck at the same time is incredibly difficult. It's an amazing skill. But it's still limited to a very narrow arena/environment. I hate to call them One-Sport-Wonders, but that pretty much describes the difficulty of the thread question. That's why we are getting some fan favorites here.

Personally I'd take someone with a broad range of athletic skills and to me the closest goes back to decathletes and such like Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner (saw both) or any of their competitors rather than one sport athletes. Even swimmers and gymnasts have to learn and deal with multiple disciplines. The greatest baseball players have a case because everyone has to run, throw, hit. Other sports have some aspects that are pretty interesting, but where is the range a decathlete has to go through?

It's an interesting question few will agree on. Yet, I'm sticking with Jim Thorpe. Have I seen him? Yes, many times. On film. Why isn't that as good as live??? We all believe in replay don't we. :D

Clara Hughes !!!

The list of Clara Hughes accomplishments is remarkable . She is one of only five people to have podium finishes in the Winter and Summer
games, and is the only person ever to have won multiple medals in both Olympics. She also had to overcome many
personal challenges such as depression.

Clara Hughes is a Champion.

Hello Merlot and all

Yes its very complicated question has you say and not many will agree.
The reason I have name Bobby Hull is that I have met him personally and he signed me a autograph witch I kept for many years he was a terrific goal scorer and constant menace for goalkeepers .
And NHL top scorer for many years !

However I also agree that a decathletes must posses many different skills and Bruce Jenner that I saw compete in the 1976 Montreal Olympic, personifies the image of a more complete athlete, however longevity is many times also at issue
To describe greatness, witch makes this topic fun and interesting in seeing the views and reasoning of others what ever they may be !

Warmest Regards
