Violence is never the answer, but there is something to be said about the old school methods to put someone in their place. But that wasn't the right time or place. I now have much more respect for Will Smith, that took a lot of balls.

they are professional actors after all....but it was a good performance, so I'm on the fence, tending towards it being real

@alca
La seule chose qui me fait demander si c’est vrai ou non.
un slap versus un punch
On s’entend qu’il a joué le role de Ali. Donc s’est très bien frapper
Il aurait plus le knockout solide

Too bad it wasn't Andrew Dice Clay telling the joke when Will went into attack mode. Then it would've been more like Oscar Night Smackdown as Will would've gotten his ass kicked on live TV.

That looked so fake can't believe people are falling for it. Big guy like that slapping a little dude, trust me he wouldn't be standing or be able to speak so easily afterwards. You can see Will Smith smiling after the slap too. Keep in mind they're both actors...

I am not sure about that, Wally. Smith came across as almost dangerously unhinged. Not a good look. It was only a joke after all. Rock came across much better because he tried to brush it off and took the high road.

This was my take as well. This and the fact that Will Smith was not removed by security, AA censors were quick to delete audio and Chris Rock was not only remarkably composed but also cracked a one liner about it being great TV. On top of that Will Smith's entire acceptance speech was an explanation of his behavior and he related it to the Richard Williams character fighting for his family and having the same instinct. Those words were composed before the ceremony, not during. Real anger gets in the way of lucid thinking.

It looked real. When Smith was angrily cursing out Rock afterwards it seemed genuine.
Smith is not that good of an actor.

SMITH IS NOT THAT GOOD AN ACTOR???? He won best actor lolllllllllllll
The Oscars are known for giving the award to box office favorites rather than actors of great skill. An Academy award win is often an acknowledgement of an actor's lengthy and successful career. Smith is ok as an actor in comedy or action roles but he doesn't have the range of someone like Anthony Hopkins or Robert Duvall.
Getting back to whether this was staged: no I don't think so. A leading man like Smith is mindful of his image. He doesn't need to pull cheap publicity stunts like this to stay on the radar. If this was truly staged then it's an extremely stupid move as it makes Smith look like some crazy asshole thug.

In any case, it has generated a lot of discussion, even here.

I think it had been staged.

Also, I don't think it will harm Smith, on the contrary.

I think paid professional actors are certainly capable of pulling off a stunt. There are certainly also indicators that this could have been a stunt, which indicators are mentioned in my post above. The goal being to get people to talk about and watch the show.

That's fair. I did say violence is never the solution. But for me, personally, more power to him. back in the olden days that kind of shit was not tolerated. But yes, non violence, taking the high road, absolutely.

On another note, whether it was a stunt or not, the joke by Chris Rock was in very poor taste. I have never understood the Academy Award and other award show culture in which it is protocol for the host to insult assorted honorees. Or their wives. This would never happen in any other business, but the point I suppose is to try and make the live show entertaining and watchable. I feel there was other ways to do that than what Chris Rock actually did. Will Smith's entire acceptance speech seemed built around this incident which is why it seems to me likely that they cobbled together an event and created drama. There is a history of these kinds of stunts at the Academy Awards and it is all to keep people awake and tuned in.

Honestly I don't think Chris Rock deserved to be smacked like that in front of everyone. The joke he made did not deserved that kind of action upon him, it was just a joke, he did not insult Jada Pinkett, he was doing his job has the host of Oscars and he is a comedian after all.
Definitely Will Smith has some balls but, he lost respect in my eyes. What he did was not okay specially in a event like this.
All I have to say is kudos to Chris Rock, how he handled himself after that. He did not strike back nor did he like touch his cheeks where he got slapped and that slap from Will Smith was full force.
I only got more respect for Chris, after how he handle the situation and continued the hosting of the Oscars.

I think it was likely real, given that the audio was cut, and the swearing from Smith afterwards was clearly genuine (you can hear the audio from other broadcasts). Rock was clearly shaken as well - at first he thought the slap was a joke, but when Will started yelling at him he became rattled, and stumbled for words for a few moments. Sure, it could have been staged on some level (the ratings last year were disastrous)... but the joke was in poor taste, so though violence should not have happened - it's not a shock that it could.
