The question is whether "toned down" violence, whether real or staged, is acceptable as a part of a live TV award show.
Forget about it being acceptable as part of a TV show...if this was at a local stand up comedy club and someone went on stage and slapped the comic, what would have happened?

I think the answer is pretty obvious: he would have been kicked out of the club and most likely would have been arrested.

I don't think LE was necessarily warranted in Smith's case, but he definitely should have been kicked out of the Awards right after it happened.

It's only because of his fame that he was able to get away with it.

You saw what everyone else saw. It looked a little phony and not a true expression of spontaneous anger from an alpha male man as opposed to a girlie man.
That slap reminded me of the medieval ages where royalty would slap someone in order to emasculate him.

It also reminded me of that infamous Batman/Robin meme, except from Batman's point of view, LOL.

On this point the Academy essentially admitted that they were disorganized and had no protocol for removing an unruly actor invitee to the show. Academy members were scattered throughout the theater and did not have the chance to discuss a policy and make a decision (see the below quoted statement). One can be assured that this lack of policy will likely change and security will be advised of a new policy going forward:
"Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night's broadcast following the incident. There were immediate discussions but the Academy decision makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn't mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor.”

It sure looked staged to me, no such thing as bad publicity. Look how viral this thing has gone. Ratings have been down over the years for the oscars. let’s see what this does to Chris Rock’s career. I’m sure bookings for his shows will increase.
he will find a way to put That incident in his upcoming shows. is Will Smith going to be really punished for his actions? Really hard to tell at this point.

At first I thought it might be an April Fools joke. But multiple sources are reporting it so I'm going to assume it's legit:

The fallout continues...

He did that so he could keep his Oscar.

I suspect his career will survive all this, but his brand will take a serious hit for a few months or so

My take.

Whatever people think Will Smith did to Chris Rock, whether you thought it was right or wrong, my thing is ... I could care less.

I could care less if he was right or wrong. Will Smith...Chris Rock...all these celebrities, I could care less about all them.

They probably wouldn't know what real adversity was, if it hit them in the face, lol

I loathe celebrities and the ultra elite at Hollywood. All these people are out of touch with reality!!!

"Omg! he slapped Chris Rock! Omg! Will Smith is wrong here!" .... C'mon please...

Such a 1st world problem lol

Now....on the other hand...if Vladimir Putin decided to invade the United States with his army, you think Will Smith or Chris Rock are gonna pick up a rifle and defend their country?? Lol haha

10 Year Ban For Smith:
They said on the news he can actually still be nominated, he just cannot show up to get his Oscar

Around the corner
^^^^^.

He can basically do everything except vote and show up at the academy to collect an award, he can still work and make as much money as he wants.
Not such a big deal there were actors who never showed up to receive their Oscar.
Actually the penalty is kind of a joke as are most of these Hollywood celebrities, they are not real people they are like zoo animals look like the real thing but have nothing else in common with the ones living free in the wild.

I mean a pretty unstable weirdo in a fucked up industry full of unstable weirdos. What could go wrong?!?!?!
After reading thru some background info on Smith and his family I mean this is the least of the problems that run amok with them.

For one the way we deal with sloppy seconds in this hobby is totally different in the way(s) he has to deal with sloppy seconds.
