Windows Vista Question

Would anyone know a good free program to open pictures on your computer with that is compatible with Vista? My laptop came with Corel Snapfire but once the "free trial" ended the pictures still open but each time I close one I get the Corel Snapfire click to own message and it's a pain in the ass.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Actually the built in picture viewer, Windows Photo Gallery, in Vista is quite good for most people. It depends what you want to do with the pics, editing and so on.

Hi Techman...How are you? The built in picture viewer defaults to Corel Snapfire. All I'd like to do is open pictures, no editing or anything like that? If I uninstall Corel Snapfire will it affect the pictures I have on my computer now?

I've also tried irfanview and it seems to be ok but am still open to other suggestions.

If you uninstall your current picture viewer, the windows Vista one should become your default picture viewer and no, the pics on your hard drive will not be affected. Techman, correct me if I'm wrong ...

Indeed, Irfanview is a very good one (many had tried to clone it).

Corel launched Snapfire to compete with ACDSee and Picasa.
So, Picasa is another good freeware (it use less memory than
Snapfire and has also a similar nice interface).

If your not going to use the program that vista came with you really cant go wrong with Picasso from Google, it works very well.

Xnview is the other "FREE" image viewing app...on par with irfranview in my opinion.

Hi SK! How's everything? If you 'right click' on an image file, you will find and option to set the default program to open it with. Yes, if you uninstall the program the settings should default to the original program settings.
Which version of Vista is on your system? If it is either Home Premium or Ultimate, you can launch Windows Media Center which will provide you with a great photo viewer as well as other multimedia options.

Most of the free viewers such as irfanview, picassa, xnview and others, Adobe also has a free image viewer and editor, also do a good job. Just don't start installing too many of them as sometimes it can cause conflicts as each will want to be the default viewer and sometimes you end up with one program opening jpg, another opening gif, and so on... The programs will give you a choice on whether to make it the default viewer or not during installation so don't forget to read the screens when you are installing. And be aware also for programs that try to install various toolbars or other 'free' programs that you don't really want. You may find yourself with 4 or 5 extra and unwanted toolbars when you open your browser, not to mention spyware junk.

Is there a free viewer that has a random slideshow? I had Picassa on my old computer, but it only did the slide-show in several sorted orders, not random. You can make a random slideshow by previewing the desktop My Pictures slideshow, but it is a little laborious to activate.

Was wondering about hooking my laptop computer up to an HDTV using a VGA cable. I know this is possible, but if I'm streaming something through the internet on my computer, for example, JustinTv, will that stream show on the television screen? Also, will the audio come through the tv?

sound, if you hook up audio cables.
use hdmi whenever possible.

Hi Special K, for VGA to HDTV, you'll need a VGA to HDMI or VGA to RCA (3 RCA RGB for HDTV) adapter, or your TV may already have a VGA plug. Many TVs do have a VGA option now, so double check the manual. If not, local stores will make you pay through th nose for these adapters (if they even carry them). Monoprice.com probably has the best prices for most PC/Audio/Video accessories in North America (not high end, but solid quality, and best price/value).

For sound, I imagine the laptop probably has a green 1/8 jack for headphones. Get a male to male 1/8 jack to connect from the headphone jack to your TV. If your TV only has RCAs (red and white circlular plugs), get an 1/8 jack to stereo rca cable (male/male) and you're good to go. If the sound is digital coaxial (orange 1/8 jack on laptop), get an 1/8 jack to coaxial (mono RCA) adapter and plug 'er into the SPDIF port (orange RCA) in the back of your tele. If it's optical then use a toslink cable.

best thing about infrview

run your slideshow as a full screen and your will have a rotating desktop* of your dirty pics . Can use same as screen saver.

* When in full screen slide-show mode, alt-tab to bring out other programs + taskbar

If you have Vista Home Premium then you should have a Media Center built into yor computor. Click the start menu and type in Media center. You can do slide shows and see all your photos in the Media Center.
