Being from NYC where we do not get as much snow as you, I would go for the Blizzaks..If you live in a constant ice/snow situation and money is not an object- go with Nokian !! Why do you think the Finns do so well in rallying...

If only I knew...
I heard nothing but good about the Nokians. Sadly, they're hard to find. My tire dealer have them this year for the first time.
Worst I ever had: Michelin. That was 20 years ago so, it might have changed. My brother had the first generation of Michelin with the Y pattern and found they were noisy as hell. Useless after the Y part is gone.
I had Toyo with the nutshell imbedded. Great tires.
I had Blizzak on a company car and my wife drives on Blizzaks. Great when new but start to slip on ice as the rubber wear.
I drive on high end Dunlop at the moment. Not as good as Blizzak or Toyo on ice but amazing in snow! Also handle very good on dry pavement. Quieter than my Toyo "all season" I use during summer.
Next winter tires will probably be Toyo. They perform more consistantly than the Blizak as they wear and are good on dry or wet pavement. They handle better than the Blizak, but not as good as the Dunlop, are noisier than the Dunlop, but for me, the performance on ice got to win so they are better for me than both Dunlop and Blizak. Unless I try Nokians?

No road hazard warranty on Michelins.

I am not 100% sure, but I was told that there is no road hazard warranty on Michelins. So, check your brand for a warranty. Tires sold at CDN Tire are road hazzard warranted and I thing this is also true at Walmart.

CDN Tire sells Michelin, so it would be interesting to see if there IS a warranty. BTW I did a search on Michelin X-Ice, and one of the review places rated them highly. As always, though, taken with a grain of salt - did someone pay for the review?

Go on Tire Rack.com..punch in your vehicle..and read the reviews. I do not know if they ship to Canada. Also, if Nokian is not distributed in Canada, and you have a problem, I am pretty sure you have no warranty. Check the Nokian Site. I have a Scion Xb , and the Blizzaks were about 75 USD, and I think the Nokians were about 100 USD. But, it doesn't snow enough here, like in Vermont, New Hampshire,Quebec..etc

Studded tires are better on ice but not good for anything else. They are actually dangerous at highway speed because slippery (steel slip on anything but ice) and risk of studs flying out. Plus, they're noisy as hell! With new winter tires technology, the studded tires lost a lot of their appeal. If you live in an area that have no highway, will never drive over 55 mph and have LOTS of snow or ice, go for it. Besides this, stick to good winter tires without studs.

Tiger Paw snow tires. Costco sells them for about $100 each. Bought mine used 8 years and 3 cars ago. They now have between 60 and 70 thousand km"s on them and still have about 50% tread left.

Meaning hard rubber so, slippery tires on ice or when the weather is cold. Or so much rubber you feel like running on elastic bands because road handling is mediocre.

According to an article publish in september in LaPresse their score was:

1) Nokian Hakkapelitta RSI
2) Gislaved NordFrost 3
3) Yokohama Ice Guard IG10

I bought the Nokian and the grip is great so far but haven't tried them yet in the snow. However, a friend of mine who is a car enthusiast is just prying by them.

Get rims with your winter tires.

I recommend that rims should be purchased with winter tires, in the long run this actualy saves you money and time. A set of rims from CDN tire will run you about $200 for a set of 4, I also purchased a electric nut removal gun at the same time ( $75 on special, $125 regular price )
In the long run this cash outlay for the rims and nut remover will pay for itself many times over, as it will cost me $50 to install my winter tires and then another $50 to remove them in the spring.

MTwallet:

I would suggest you check your winter tires at the end of this winter, snow tires are useless in the snow when they get to about 35%. I suggest you rum them in the summer to use up their useful life, and get new winter tires next season.
Safe driving and hobbying, gentlemen. And always invest in good rubber, no matter your endeavor! ;)

All you CHEAPOs win! Dunlop Graspics winter tires 30% off!

All you CHEAPOs that figured that you could skid by this winter without winter tires or maybe make you bald winter tires go for another winter, win!
The falling prices at Walmart just went CLUNK for winter tires. The Dunlop, Graspic tires that were priced better than CDN tire prices have just been reduced 30% ( end of season clearance )
All you CHEAPOs out there have just saved the price of 1 SP visit or 2 MP with HJ visits.

Yes, but you should avoid Wal-Marts until they learn how to respect employees.

Too late but I'll try to remember it. :)

I compared with tirerack but when you factored in shipping/duty/brokerage/exchange rate it came out about the same.
