hmm, at the rate of speed Tarantino takes to come out with a new movie, I don't think we should hold our breaths hoping for these sequels- meaning I believe these will never get made, and he'll just move on to different original projects...

Thanks for the comments Beav'. Truthfully I really do like Bruce Willis' performance in Pulp Fiction, I didn't mention him with the others as I don't think he had a supporting part, but rather he was shoulder to shoulder with Uma Thurman, Travolta and Samuel Jackson. Ol' Bruno did himself proud here, much better than in another of his old films I recently saw again, THE LAST BOY SCOUT (a great script, but wheehooo, what a stinkbomb performance!)

i wouldn't know where to place it in the Cohens's body of work. good story telling, great caracterisations. The brothers shine in their knack of turning the banal and the dull into something hilarious. i know some people won't "get it" but i surprised myself really enjoying that one.

The Girlfriend Experience

The most recent move i've seen is Steven Sodebergh's "The Girlfriend Experience". It's the story of a high-end NYC callgirl named 'Chelsea'. It stars well-known pornstar 'Sasha Grey', whose performance is anything short of amazing. Roger Ebert gave this movie 4 stars out of 4 & also praised Grey's performance.

When i bought the DVD at a Toronto HMV two weeks ago, i had planned to only watch about 30 minutes of it, and watch the rest later. To be honest, i was hooked within the first 15 minutes & wound up watching the whole movie in one sitting.

I knew Sasha Grey from a few movies she made. To be honest, i forgot she was 'Sasha Grey' after the first half hour. Now when i see Sasha Grey performing in skin movies, i see "Chelsea", the high-end prostitute. The movie reminded me of several high-end sps i've met over the past 10 years. It almost made me wonder if they weren't technical advisors to the movie's script.

I honestly think Sasha Grey could be the next big-time pornstar to enter the mainstream market & be the most successful of them all, Traci Lords included. Some may find the movie somewhat dull, but since i feel i've been involved in this business for nearly a decade, it really caught this movie enthusiast's interest.

The best line in the movie, to me, involved Grey casually mentionning that she's performing a role in her chosen profession, and that most men would refuse to pay her any money if she'd show her true self to them.

I strongly recommend this movie to Merb's more serious movie fans.

The most recent movie I've seen is 5051 Rue des Ormes. This film is loosely based on Patrick Senechal's novel with the same title. I'm not especially a fan of this genre (horror/mystery) but I should recognize that this film was well conducted and the plot was good.

I have also seen (for the first time) two masterpieces, One of them, filmed in 1968, is from the Cuban Tomás Gutiérrez Aléa: Memorias del subdesarrollo (Memories of Underdeveloppment). A lucid and allegorical vision of Cuba after the Revolution through the eye of a blasé bourgeois (Sergio). A "collage" movie where reality mingles with fiction.

The other movie was from the Spanish cineast Victor Erice: El espiritu de la colmena [Spirit of the Beehive] (1973). A movie about the quest of identity for a young girl (played by Ana Torrent) in the franquist period. This movie is a masterpiece! There's intertextuality between the classical Frankenstein movie and Francostein, the Caudillo as the monster. A movie about silence with incredible scenes.

The Surrogates

I just came back from seeing The Surrogates. It's not the typical Bruce Willis action movie and actually makes you wonder if we could actually end up like that someday. It's a sci-fi movie where almost everyone lives their everyday lives through robotic surrogates and never leave their homes. You can't die if the robot does or get sick from contact with other people. Of course, nothing is as perfect as it seems. I found it to be an interesting concept, not entirely original but few movies are these days, but one of the better sci-fi movies I've seen in a long time. If you're looking for a high action movie you'll be disappointed, But if you want an interesting sci-fi flick, I think you'll enjoy it.

I found it was worth the price of the ticket. Definitely worth the price of a rental when it hits the video stores.

Just saw this one. As expected, the special effects are unreal. There are several separate incredible thrill rides that will keep you on the edge. General story line...7 of 10.

I was very happy to see the cause of the disaster they used was something scientifically plausible, not some mystical indulgence.

Interesting solution.

Well my buddy called me late in the PM yesterday to tell me we could go to catch the premier of Pour Toujours Les Canadiens at the Bell Center in a private loge. So there was no way I could say no!

Well it was nothing like I expected it to be. Not knowing anything about the movie, I expected it, from the title, to be a documentary about the history of hockey's greatest team. And while it did include a lot of the teams history it was done within the body of a family style dramatic film that would have been right at home with a Disney logo at the beginning. It's a story about a young boy in need of a kidney transplant, an older boy who is a hockey player dealing with the pressures of playing for a new team and parents who have little time for him due to their own jobs, and how they all come together as friends due to their love of hockey and the habs. That's a very simplified synopsis of the film.

It's a great family film and very enjoyable for adults who have a love of hockey and the habs. I heard some of the critics say that it wasn't a great movie, and I don't think they really understood the idea of the film. But opinions differ and while it was not the best movie I've seen in my life, I really enjoyed it.

The entire Canadiens team was there and I wonder how they felt when the crowd cheered during scenes with Koivu and Kovalev playing for the habs. If nothing else, they should have learned something about the rich history of Montreal's favourite sports team and the love this city has for the team and players. Seeing the Richards, Roy, Dryden, Plante, Lafleur, Gainey, and all the rest of the team's legends and the crowd's response to them hopefully had an effect on the new members of the team.

Is it a great movie, no it isn't. But it is a touching film that I'm sure made everyone in attendance smile and we all cheered in the end. Formula film? Sure it is. But it's a great one that everyone will enjoy if they have at least half a heart. And I saw many wiping their eyes at the end of the movie.

Besides...according to the movie, the habs were in the Stanley Cup final last year against the Wings and that alone made it worth watching for the sci-fi factor!

And Saku spoke French!

The film was followed by the entire cast being introduced in person to a rousing round of applause. A totally enjoyable evening.

By the way, the movie was shown on the giant HD scoreboard and it was amazing. It was also broadcast to the HD sceens in the loge but I turned it off as it was a distraction. I heard today that it set a Guiness record for the largest audience for a movie premier.

It was definitely a different movie experience seeing it at the Bell Center.

Hello all,

Mother world spiritualism versus pure material practicality. The movie has a lot of what has been been stereotyped or projected upon the current Native American image of the human-Earth Mother connection. Those are the "good guys". The "bad guys" are the high tech materialists.

Visually, the movies is absolutely astounding. Even if the story line has a familiar theme, I don't think anyone can feel it isn't worth the price of a ticket just for a look at the fantasy world Cameron has created. Maybe the character qualities of each side in the movie are a little too stereotypical (good versus evil) like the Star Wars series, but it is a great visual experience with a much more feminine visual mystique in it's look compared to the far more masculine Star Wars. I enjoyed it.

Zombieland was really funny. We almost walked out in the first 5 minutes but decided to stay. Glad we did. How about Billy Murray's Cameo?

I enjoyed this movie, even though its plot was somewhat formulaic and predictable. Despite that it was well above average for the fantasy or science fiction genre. I can certainly see comparisons between certain elements of the movie and "Star Wars", although Darth Vader was a vastly superior villain than either Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) or Quaritch (Stephen Lang). I saw it in 3D and the 3D technology with the flying-jellyfish like creatures was fantastic. I thought they were coming at me.

There was one quirky plot twist I did not quite get. After an extended buildup about the synergy and loyalty between the Na'vi warriors and their "chosen" birds, and the Vulcan-like "mind meld" between man and bird, Jake ditches his "chosen" bird to "go to the next level" - i.e., a bigger, meaner bird. In the scheme of things, this did not really make any sense. But in a big movie like this which is largely built to please the masses, I guess not everything is supposed to make sense. Did anyone else make any sense of this? Did I miss something?

A question for everyone who saw Avatar...how well do the 3-D effects work overall? I've read reviews that say this is probably the best use of 3-D to date in a film. Did you need to take a break and remove the glasses during the film considering the length and any headache or other adverse effects?

The 3D is the best I have seen, without any question. There are these flying jellyfish-like creatures which play an important role in the film, and they look like they are coming at you. Definitely see the movie in 3D. Where I saw it, it was playing in 4 theaters, 2 of which were 2D and 2 of which were 3D. I put the 3D glasses over my eyeglasses and my friend wore the 3D glasses over his contact lenses. It worked well for me. My friend said it worked great for him too. No adverse effects.

I can't see 3D and always feel left out why I try. Oh well, at least Double D is still an option.

I went to see Avatar in 3D today. The visuals were awesome, very colorful plants. Then, the brain gets somehow used to the 3D effects and as the movie goes on it is less and less likely for new scenes to trigger a WOW.

I was expecting a bad plot after reading the reviews and I mostly went for the visual effects. Though, I found the story nice with even some intense moments. I wonder if this movie has political motivations.

I usually don't like long movies and avoid to watch them in movie theaters. Though, Avatar was not boring (e.g. watching The Lord of The Rings and The Matrix were painful experiences for me).

Last thing, if you are planning to watch this movie during the holidays season then you should go ahead of time. People who came 10 minutes before the start of the movie had trouble to find decent empty seats.
