Imperial Oil

This is a company that measures profit in the BILLIONS of dollars, yet treats it's employees in a disgraceful and ILLEGAL manner. I do a lot of driving for business and pleasure, and have gotten to know a few of the counter staff. Some of the stories are truly shocking.

In one particular outlet near Ottawa, the lady, whom I have known for several years relayed the following bits of information:
There is no such thing as an employee discount
There are no set break times (illegal)
If you are working alone, you may not close the station, even for a bathroom break
The salary is so bad, most employees can't qualify for a company credit card

I didn't bother to ask about benefits or pension plans, because I'm sure there are none. Makes me very glad that I don't work there. Makes me angry that a major corporation gets away with that sort of crap.

Who would get your vote for worst employer?

I know a lot of people have fond memories of being a paperboy,
but newspapers get away with paying squat to these kids. They get my vote.

If only I knew...
MtWallet, lots of these gas stations/convenience stores aren't owned by the gas companies. Even if all the decor, banners and publicity bear the name of the gas company, lots of these outlets are owned privately and operated under licence by an independent owner. He's the one fixing the work conditions.

The salary being so bad as it can, can't be below minimum wages.

I think the executive management team at imperial oil is doing QUITE well... So they have minimum wage workers at their service centers... What's big deal??? It's a gas station.... I think the same issue exists at thousands of companies... The CEO of mcdonalds does not get paid the same as the toilet cleaner at your local restaurant.

I agree with mydingling -- people need to get off their butts and do something if they are unhappy with their lives.

The guy who is CEO of FedEx used to be a FedEx truck driver... He worked his way to the top over 20 years. The same thing can happen at Esso, or McDonald's or anywhere else... But people need to work. Standing behind the counter and complaining to the customers about how bad your job is is not the kind of behavior that gets rewarded in any way. It's LOSER behavior.

Also, mtwallet, did you think about what would happen to the price of gas if Imperial Oil started paying all gas attendants $15 instead of $8/hour? Or the stock value if they raised pay, but not prices?? How much would a Big Mac cost if a PHD getting $60/hour handed it you instead of a 16 year old making $8/hour...

I'm still here. I just have better things to do than spend four hours on the board waiting for a reply.

My dear Mr Dingaling, please forgive me for not realising just how anal you appear to be. I didn't realise that I was dealing with someone who has all the answers, yet still needs it spelled out for him. If the station was a franchise, I wouldn't have bothered with the thread. Nor would I have said she was employed by Imperial Oil. As for finding a better paying job. Have you seen just what is outside Ottawa? Nothing but farms. Do you know what it was like 10-15 years ago? There was even less. There were no high paying jobs. There was no money for her to go to college.

Contrary to what you may believe I do NOT think that higher wages means more tax money to grab. I DO believe in taxing the shit out of the rich, cutting Govt funding to absurd projects (floating a giant banana over Texas...look it up), and spending Canadian tax dollars on CANADIANS. I would prefer to feed, clothe and educate people in this country before trying to help Africa or India. Do you really want to help them? Buy them condoms.

$5 for a litre of gas will mean less polution? Who are you kidding? Most of the world's pollution comes from the smoke stacks of factories. You must be one of those whackos who believes in "carbon taxes". Take your head out of your ass and smell the real world. Those taxes only hurt the little guy. Big corporations will buy carbon credits (same program is in the US) before they do anything to cut emmisions. All that will do is put more money into the Govt coffers, and more smoke into your lungs.

Do me favor Mr Dingaling, try living in a truly rural area for a few years, Beaconsfield doesn't count, before you start preaching about ignoring non existant opportunities. That, and when you eventually fall off your soapbox of self thought superiority, make sure you land on your head.

As mentioned above most service stations are merely franchises... You can usually tell by the name on the bill... it's will say XYZ's ESSO STATION..

I don't know who the worst employers are but I do know the worst employees: Canadian politicians (with Montreal transit workers a close second).

Open mouth and insert foot

My_dingaling, I hope you will accept my appologies. I was not aware of the deleted posts. I took what I read as an attack on my opinion and really stuck my foot in my mouth.

Mod 5, thank you for only giving me a warning.
