Many will be interested in hearing what the always brilliant Brooke Magnanti had to say last week before the Home Affairs select committee session on prostitution in UK.

I'd suggest you watch it quickly because it's going to be online only for 2 more weeks. You'll need to use Hola! and clear your cache because it has to be viewed from UK only.

Maybe someone could explain to me how to save the video so it does not get lost.

PBS Point Taken had a debate recently on whether paying for sex should be crime or not. I liked the sex worker from the Umbrella Project. The yes side was composed of a philosopher who did not know anything about sex work and a woman who invented statistics to fit her purpose.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/point-taken/should-prostitution-be-crime/#intro

There are other links on the program site.

PBS shows us how to frame a totally unbiased way to ask a question (lol):

Poverty and lack of opportunity are two of the main reasons people turn to sex work. Should the law punish them, or people on the other side of the transaction who create the demand? Criminalizing the purchase instead of the sale means a sex worker can call the police if things get ugly. But would protections for sex worker in turn increase exploitation by pimps and organized crime? There are many factors to consider, but they all converge on one question: should paying for sex be a crime? Yes or no. (my emphasis)

Meet KittyKorner or, more precisely, visit KittyKorner, a Youtube channel run by an unnamed australian sex worker. She has many interesting videos, including a very good How To for someone wanting to work in brothel. She also does activist stuff. Here's no 2 of a 3 part video on why sex workers need feminists AND MRAs. Some will like it because it's a feel good video for clients. However, it's not the reason why she made it.

Meet Jaana Kaupinen, director of Pro-tukpiste, a Finnish organisation defending the rights of sex workers and providing services to sex workers. The best formulations come at 4 minutes if you want a shorter version.

Finland's "model" is abolitionist on steroids. Legal to buy and sell but almost everything facilitating it criminal. In 2006 they introduced a new specific crime, that of buying sexual services from an exploited sex worker. Luxembourg is in final phase of the adoption of the same crime.

The ethics of prostitution: Selling sex out of the shadows

A madam, Ivy League education apparently, in New Zealand

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11797730
.

Wow - 10 years since legalization and:

"New Zealand seems way ahead of the curve in terms of decriminalisation and yet for some reason much of the sex industry is still bogged down in sort of shady working practices," says Murphy. "It's still not socially accepted and there is still a lot of judgment."

Even if it eventually gets decriminalized here in Canada, it will also take a long time to overcome the stigma to become socially acceptable.

COMING DAILY TO A WEBPAGE NEAR YOU,
STARTING 17 MAY, IN 22 GROUNDBREAKING EPISODES.

By Rose Alliance, the Swedish network of sex workers

http://www.nottotallystupid.com/

MANY ASSUMED ALL SEX WORKERS IN SWEDEN WOULD HAVE BEEN RESCUED BY NOW, BUT SOME MANAGED TO ESCAPE THE RESCUE PARTY AND THEIR THERAPY & TEA-SESSIONS, AND THEY HAVE BEEN KEEPING THEMSELVES VERY BUSY.

TIRED OF BEING TREATED LIKE CHILDREN AND LABELED PSYCHOLOGICALLY DAMAGED, THEY DECIDED TO EXPOSE THEIR OPPRESSORS AND THEIR EVIL ACTS OF DISCRIMINATION TO THE WORLD, HOPING TO PREVENT DISASTER STRIKING IN YET ANOTHER COUNTRY. THEY HAD NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE AND TIME WAS RUNNING OUT....

ROSE ALLIANCE PROUDLY PRESENTS
A TEAM OF LIGHT PRODUCTION
SUPPORTED BY OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATIONS
INTRODUCING THE NEW REPORT FROM
THOSE WHO CANNOT CONSENT
...THEN AGAIN THEY ARE NOT TOTALLY STUPID EITHER

COMING DAILY TO A WEBPAGE NEAR YOU,
STARTING 17 MAY, IN 22 GROUNDBREAKING EPISODES.

SWEDEN THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD CARE ABOUT WHAT SEX WORKERS HAD TO SAY…
THEY WERE WRONG.

Parcours migratoires
