I approve almost all of Trump's current policies and his implementation of those policies: cutting federal funds to universities that tolerated anti-semetic , pro-Hamas campus disruptions; banning discriminatory DEI practices by the government; banning men from women's sports etc.

But I am adamantly opposed to Trump's tariff policies and especially by his confused, misguided and bumbling implementation of his tariff policies. He can't even decide the reason for his own tariff policy. Is it to raise revenue to replace the revenue that might be lost by tax cuts or is it to protect and supposedly restore some imaginary golden age of American manufacturing? Or both? Or neither? It depends on what he feels like when he answers the question. He needs to go back to the Univ. of Pennsylvania and retake the Economics 101 course.

Anyway, what should Canada do about Trump's sabotage of the U.S. Canada economic relationship. It would be normal for Canada to punch back hard at Trump and match his tariffs tit for tat. But that would punish Canadians and the Canadian economy just as much as the Trump tariffs will inevitably damage American pocketbooks and firms. A wise Canadian economist and a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute proposes a different strategy and I agree: just wait him out until Americans scream loud enough in protest and threaten to vote against the Republicans in any upcoming elections (other countries should do the same). High tariffs are the same as high taxes and Americans don't need or want any more taxes than they already have.

What is important now for Trump is a big 92 millions $ military parade in Washington honoring him !
When some adults will make him receive the mental cares he heavily needs !

My grand father was an avid golfer. He always said he could judge a man's character based on how honest he was with his score.
Mr Shit Pants can't even golf honorably lol
There is video of Trump driving his golf cart on a green. Shows now respect for the game nor the golfers behind him, but shows a lot about the kind of person he is.

There is a striking parallel with infamous Roman Emperor Nero. Nero was known as the lover of theatrics and had also declared himself the best poet, musician, the best chariot driver, etc., etc. and “won” numerous competitions (often under the threat of death for challengers). He ended up in killing himself when running away.

The range of outcomes is broad and everything depends on just one guy, a petulant nutcase who sounds like he's making it up on the fly.

How is that democracy? Rather, an imperial presidency, divorced from reality, so yeah, the Nero analogy seems about right ... just as the court donors (Musk/Ackerman) and advisors (Navarro) begin to fight among themselves.

Treasury yields went down then rose again dramatically. No one has trust in this. Least of all the countries Trump has alienated. They're not buying ... and others are selling for cash, the only "safe haven" right now, aside from gold.

I listened to Treasury Secretary Bessent, in his interview, with Carlson (who challenged him on nothing) say, among a grab bag of reasons, that they're doing this so as not to be "hostage" (his word) to foreign supply chains.

By which he means Asia, more particularly China. You would only blow up the economy (just in the short term, they think) if you're planning to go to war, with Iran soon, and China, someday in the not too distant future.

They're so paranoid about China's (noticeably un-warlike) rise, they may feel the only way to stop it is through real warfare. The US tried tech bans under Biden, only to end up with the shock of DeepSeek, and are now, in all but words, at the defacto embargo stage of 100% tafiffs.

As Nero would have known, all empires require hegemony ... and China is a threat to the present-day one.

One interesting thing to notice is how only two countries slapped on retaliatory tariffs against USA, the countries are Canada and China. Mexico did not put any retaliatory tariffs. The other 70 countries are attempting to negotiate and EU has not imposed any retaliatory tariffs yet.

My current understanding is ...

Canada is exempt from the 90-day 10% baseline tariff, on all goods that are USMCA compliant.

But it still faces industry-specific tariffs, such as the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum and the 25% tariff on non-U.S. content in "imported" cars. These tariffs have been matched by Canada with exactly the same 25% counter-tariffs.

Its crazy to think we live in a timeline where the wealthy don't even need to hide their happiness of fucking over the entire world.

"They're not confessing." "They're bragging."' - The Big Short

Anyone that supports this is literally just showing you what type of individual they are. They will be easy to spot... they argue about useless elections thinking it changes anything. This isn't about left or right anymore. This IS NOT about the rich vs the poor. This is about the ultra-wealthy vs everyone else. And ya, if you have a few million in assets you're not rich... you're now the nouveau-middle class.

I disagree with retaliatory tariffs. These are charges that will be passed on to Canadians. Already with a cost of living crisis, Canadians do not need to pay more. No one pays the price in trade wars more then the little guy, the guy working a regular job.
