Ive hiked in the Himalayas at 17000 feet and it was rough. so I will learn my lesson and acclimitize to the altitude before taking the hike up
Especialy if you fly direct from Lima which is at sea level, the shock on your cardio system will be brutal, like walking a few meters and finding yourself out of breath.
I did the trip a long time ago but travelling on roads. I had plenty of time ahead of me( I spent a few months there), so I could slowly acclimate to the progressive rise in altitude.
Even then, I used coca leaves (as well as the white stuff but for a different reason

),to ease things up, Urquell’s recomendation to use coca candies instead is a great idea, since the effects might kick in quicker and sugar is also great to fight "soroche ".
This happened some 40 years ago, I was young and definately not there to monger. I consider myself very lucky, in those years, you could climb and visit Machu Picchu on your own and didnt have to book a tour or a guide, although those already exist at the time.
We took off from Agua Caliente and hike our way to the top at 4:30 in the morning to get to see the sun slowly revealing the mystic ancient city under our eyes. One of the most intense moment in my Life! Enjoy your trip!
