Its a classic case of Burke being Burke, thats why he is a great GM. he knows his craft.

CTV was replaying the last few minutes of last nights game today so for a 3rd time i got to watch the ending and in that final barrage of shots that Canada unloaded on the United States, before Ryan Kesler scored that empty netter, i counted out of 10 "attempts" at shots on goal, there were actually only 2 that made it to miller, half were blocked (credit the USA Defense) and the other half were not on net, so i have watched that game now, and some parts of it, 3 times, and it was NOT as lopsided as the stat sheet says, not even close. alot of Canada's 40 plus shots on goal were not great scoring chances, but Miller did make some amazing saves as well and was the difference in the game, but the US was not outplayed as much as some think. lets hope USA and CANADA both make it to the Gold Medal game, nothing would be better for the NHL and for all of us on here who love the "Coolest Game on Earth".

I hate to say this, but Burkie is absolutely correct. The final score & outcome of the game doesn't reflect how the game went. Canada dominated this game & the USA were saved by an incredible performance from their goaltender. The final 3 minutes of the game were some of the best minutes of offensive hockey i've seen in years.....Canada bombarded Miller with everything they had, yet the great goalie stood on his head. Will he be able to do it again? By the way, Canadian coach Babcock must have caught the same brain-freeze that USA coach Ron Wilson got during this NHL season & didn't call a time-out with a minute left in order to rest his top line of Crosby-Nash-Iginla, along with the two young defencemen. It might have cost them the game, and possibly the gold medal. What did he have to lose with just a minute left in the game? Stoopid, stoopid, stoopid!

babcock is in a tough situation as far as who to play, Luongo played horrible his last game before the olympics and hasnt been at his best this season such as years past, but then again Fleury is overrated so what can he do? my choice tho would be Luongo, he is at home, and has more experience than Fleury, even tho M.A.F. has a stanley cup ring

Fleury is & always will be Canada's #3 goalie in this edition of Team Canada. It's time to give Luongo a chance. I'm certain he can't wait to perform admirably in front of his home crowd, in the same hockey arena that he's spent the most of his career performing in.

Brodeur earned the top spot due to past performances. Most people agreed with this. It was his job to lose. But so far, he hasn't shown enough to warrant keeping that spot. It was his to keep, and he failed. It's time to step aside & pass the torch to the future, Roberto Luongo.

Fleury has also had a tough season. Personally, i don't even consider him to be among the top 10 goalies in the NHL. One day, he might be. But who knows.....

The fact of the matter is that Canada not only outshot the USA by a larger margin last night, they outplayed them for the most part of the game. The difference in the game was the goaltending, especially the great Ryan Miller, who's possibly the best goalie in the NHL this season. The guy is unreal! Canada played a great game, but wound up getting killed by the penalties they took. Brodeur played very well, but not great. He wasn't there when Canada needed a game-saving save, like he used to do in past years.

Yeah Right!!!!

Any team that takes 45 shots and can't score enough to win when the other team only gets 23 shots simply cannot be called dominate, especially when the other team had to play short-handed for so long. And, it's hard to believe that in a country that prides itself on being the source of the best hockey players in the world that the best Canada can find is a goalie that gave up scores on 21.7% of the shots attempted by an offense you imply wasn't much of a factor, while the opposition goalie gave up goals on only 6.6% of the shots taken, again, many of which were on power plays by a so-called dominate offense. No matter what goalie is in the net that certainly isn't dominance, and no goalie can do that well for so long while short-handed without great defensive play by everyone.

No offense Doc, you aren't the first to use the "hot goalie" excuse, but it is just an excuse.

The final score & outcome of the game doesn't reflect how the game went. Canada dominated this game & the USA were saved by an incredible performance from their goaltender.

You can't have it both ways. The more you marginalize the rest of the U.S. team by saying Canada was dominate, and imply you got beat by the goalie the more you make the Canadian team look truly inept. You can't say a team was dominate and imply they got beat by one guy, which is the essence of all your statements.

"You guys are probably going to be shocked by this, but I'm not happy with the way we've played to this point," Burke said during an afternoon press conference at Canada Hockey Place. "If that's how we play, we're going to have a hard time getting to where we want to get here and medaling."

I hate to say this, but Burkie is absolutely correct.

The truth is Burke could not say anything else if he wants to keep an edge for his team. What is he supposed to say before the competition is over? You were perfect tonight. You played the best game anyone ever played. I'm not crazy about this technique but obviously it's his way to bring his team back to earth and remind them they've got some extremely tough competition ahead. It's mainly a tactic. He doesn't want them to mentally accept the game against Canada as the goal and thus lose their edge. Of course they didn't do everything right. They do need to keep improving. But of course also Burke want's to make sure they don't lose their edge in the rest of the games by finding more faults and being unsatisfied. It's an old and common strategy. That's all. But hey, if anyone wants to jump on this excuse opportunity from Burke to feel better...then go for it. The final proof is the result. Team Canada was not better than TEAM U.S.A. this time.

Cheers,

Merlot

Thus, "Burke being Burke" , he is fully into his hockey persona.. amazing after the tragedy of losing his son just days ago, the Olympics are the best therapy for him.

Merlot, i don't really know why you constantly try to be confrontational in these sports threads when it's quite obvious to most of us who follow hockey that your hockey knowledge is pretty much equal to a kid in kindergarten who starts to skate.

Let me ask you a simple question: "Have you ever attended an NHL game in person?"

Thanks. I already knew the answer.

A votre sante,

'Doc'

p.s. Sorry, but i'm not gonna be dragged into a pissing contest with someone who's hockey knowledge is grossly inferior to my own. It simply wouldn't be fair. My grandmother always told me not to pick on the weak, and in this particular case, i'll follow her sound advice. God bless her!

Now Doccie,

The simple fact is the way you characterize the U.S. team exactly contradicts your assessment of Canada as dominate. If you find the facts confrontational it's unfortunate. Whatever state of hockey knowledge you may have no one needs any to see the contradictions in what you said. We were better...but we got beat by the goalie though the rest of the team was not a real factor. Yeah, that makes sense.

Now why get small-minded and insulting because someone didn't agree with you. So you think you know about me huh. Well, I have been to several Bruins games...as if that could be a point of knowledge when any schmuck can pay for a ticket. I saw them beat Montreal once too. I played hockey and could skate very well, though I did not handle the puck well. We were so avid in the off-season that my friends and I chipped in to rent a the local rink, yeah, a full size one with ice and actual goals and everything, for a game several times often in the only time we could get it...between 2:00-4:00 am...that's right AM. So try not to speak of that which you clearly know nothing. It was very childish.

Cheers,

Merlot

I'm sorry i've hurt your feelings, Merlot. I hope it won't make you lose a night of sleep over. However, i tend to sometimes get irritated when some know-nothing nose-picker continuously tries to make me look bad & goad me into a flame war, only to make himself look like the victim afterwards when he can't take the heat & criticism. If i've offended you, i'm sorry. If i've overreacted, my sincere apologies.

Hey Doc,

Ya know, I'm not going this route. If I seemed confrontational I'm sorry. Nothing back-handed either. I did get over-zealous, but so what. Since you know the game so well we all could have expected better than truly childish insults. If you can't respond with better than that then don't post; and no apologies for saying what it is.

And, if you think 95% of what I have read in any of the hockey threads is any demonstration of knowledge then you are dead wrong. Often the trash there makes the baseball thread look like a Mensa conference...sadly.

Bonne nuit,

Merlot

Sorry to go off topic, Doc, but that's exactly why I've stopped posting in the baseball thread. Between Merlot, Joe.T, and lgna, the thread is no longer about baseball, but about who can race who back to the womb more quickly, although I will say that while Merlot does exhibit a fair amount of baseball knowledge, he's more than willing to get sucked into igna's stupidity-fests.

Okay,

We thank you for your baseball knowledge Rumples, and your great restraint against ever going "back to the womb." Joe.t FM will be relieved to hear it. ;)

The goalie did it! The day G1G ever admits to any flaw in his team or loyalties hell will freeze and Teletubbies will rule the world...or do they...lol...sorry guys, but 4 goals against a "dominate" Canada on 22 shots (5 on 23 shots) cannot be explained away by a hot opposition goalie.

cheers,

ahhhh Rumples my friend, hey listen, i no several (even those who wont admit it, trust me on that) who think your silly stats are stupid, i mean what good did they do last season? all your stats pointed to the red sox winning the world series and the Yankees not making the playoffs, , OUPS, i guess your stats had a few flaws eh?

like i have always said, a TRUE fan is passionate about their team and heated debates, silliness, joking, ribbing, etc, are all part of that passion we as FANS have, you may not like to play that way, thats fine, but you sure dont mind "baiting" others, ESPECIALLY when someone makes a crack about your "stats" and how funny they are cause in the long term, they usually mean Squat, so like it or lump it, what you do is no different than what we do when you look at the realm of it all.. and instead of saying something silly, i will finish this with something you can appreciate and understand, instead of what you call stupid, and thats this :

2010 Winter Olympic STATS

* 93% of the audience in the USA/CANADA Hockey game rooted for Canada *

* there will be over 7 million cans of Molson and over 15,000 kegs consumed at the Vancouver games *

* over 10 million hot dogs will be ate *

* over 30 million fluffy white popcorns devoured *

* over 1000 rolls of hockey tape will be used by all olympic hockey teams *

* a big % now see how silly stats can be and also how silly my way can be, SO WHAT!, heres a tissue, get over it * :)
