SAME OLD SAME OLD FOR THE LEAFS
Congrats to the Leafs for dumping the NHL's most hated and least respected coach, Ron Wilson last season.
Bigger congrats to the Leafs for dumping that failure Brian Burke just before the start of this season.
Unfortunately in spite of those 2 excellent moves, the rot is so deeply entrenched that this sad sack franchise is clearly headed towards its 46th consecutive season without reaching the finals (never mind - ha ha - winning a Cup)! O fcourse this is the longest drougt in the NHL, no surprise for the laughingstock known far and wide as Canada's National Embarrassment.
The pathetic Leafs, after 5 games, are LAST in their division, 13th out of 15 in their conference, and 24th in the league.
Against the Rangers last night they blew a 2-0 lead and lost 5-2. They were outshot 41 to 17!!! Absolutely HUMILIATED as usual for this bunch of losers.
Their best (ha ha ha) offensive player Phil Kessel is a minus 2, with ZERO goals and a paltry 2 assists in 5 games. On the bright side however he is no longer the Invisible Man - it's hard to be invisible when you lead the league in giveaways. Any offensive ability this guy has is completely eroded by the fact that he is one of the softest players in the league, not willing to pay the price, and a defensive liability.
Their second best (?) offensive player is Joffrey Lupul, the type of fragile often-injured player that Burkie used to love to trade for (remember the ridiculous failure of the Connelly experiment?). To no one's surprise Lupul is now out for 6 weeks - a huge chunk in this SHORTENED season. But hey at least Lupul got injured just AFTER signing a 5 year $25 miillion contract so HE'S laughing all the way to the bank.
And the REASON Lupul i s out? Simple: he was injured by a typically uncontrolled shot from "captain" Dion Phaneuf - yes, the same Phaneuf that Calgary was so happy to dump on Burkie because of his lack of discipline, his unloved status as a team cancer, and his defensive liabilities. The multiple winner of the Most Overrated Player in the NHL (as voted by the players themselves) hurts his team in SO many ways. He is currently a minus 8 (!) after only 5 (!) games.
Burkie - the Architect of Failure - may be gone, bt his legacy of ineptitude lives on in the NHL's most pathetic franchise. As many wise observers have remarked, HAMILTON (!!!) will probably win a Cup before Toronto!
