I wouldn't refer to the team with more Cups than any other over the last two decades as "dead things".

I wouldn't refer to a team that has not missed the playoffs in two decades as "dead things".

I wouldn't refer to ateam that set a new NHL record for home wins just last season as "dead things".

I wouldn't refer to a team with the best ownership, best management, best scouting, best GM, and one of the best coaches as "dead things".

I MIGHT however refer to a team as "dead things" if they had not won in a Cup in 46 (!) years and counting (and in fact had not even made it to the finals in 46! years and counting), if they had not even made it to the freakin' playoffs in almost a decade, if they were in total turmoil having just - finally! - fired their incompetent GM (only to replace him with his lapdog), if they had NO decent centres or goalies (continuing their long-established tradition), and if they were known across North America as the WORST of all pro sports franchises, as a complete laughingstock, and as Canada's National Embarrassment.

But hey - they DID beat the Habs tonight - golly gee, quick - reserve Yonge Street for the Stanley Cup Parade after this GIGANTIC achievement (beating a team with no scoring power, a hurting goalie, and an unsigned D-man - a team that as you correctly noted on many occasions were cellar dwellers last year finishing a couple of points even below the always wretched Toronto Maple Leafs). Yep, better plan that parade.

SAME OLD SAME OLD FOR THE LEAFS

Congrats to the Leafs for dumping the NHL's most hated and least respected coach, Ron Wilson last season.

Bigger congrats to the Leafs for dumping that failure Brian Burke just before the start of this season.

Unfortunately in spite of those 2 excellent moves, the rot is so deeply entrenched that this sad sack franchise is clearly headed towards its 46th consecutive season without reaching the finals (never mind - ha ha - winning a Cup)! O fcourse this is the longest drougt in the NHL, no surprise for the laughingstock known far and wide as Canada's National Embarrassment.

The pathetic Leafs, after 5 games, are LAST in their division, 13th out of 15 in their conference, and 24th in the league.

Against the Rangers last night they blew a 2-0 lead and lost 5-2. They were outshot 41 to 17!!! Absolutely HUMILIATED as usual for this bunch of losers.

Their best (ha ha ha) offensive player Phil Kessel is a minus 2, with ZERO goals and a paltry 2 assists in 5 games. On the bright side however he is no longer the Invisible Man - it's hard to be invisible when you lead the league in giveaways. Any offensive ability this guy has is completely eroded by the fact that he is one of the softest players in the league, not willing to pay the price, and a defensive liability.

Their second best (?) offensive player is Joffrey Lupul, the type of fragile often-injured player that Burkie used to love to trade for (remember the ridiculous failure of the Connelly experiment?). To no one's surprise Lupul is now out for 6 weeks - a huge chunk in this SHORTENED season. But hey at least Lupul got injured just AFTER signing a 5 year $25 miillion contract so HE'S laughing all the way to the bank.

And the REASON Lupul i s out? Simple: he was injured by a typically uncontrolled shot from "captain" Dion Phaneuf - yes, the same Phaneuf that Calgary was so happy to dump on Burkie because of his lack of discipline, his unloved status as a team cancer, and his defensive liabilities. The multiple winner of the Most Overrated Player in the NHL (as voted by the players themselves) hurts his team in SO many ways. He is currently a minus 8 (!) after only 5 (!) games.

Burkie - the Architect of Failure - may be gone, bt his legacy of ineptitude lives on in the NHL's most pathetic franchise. As many wise observers have remarked, HAMILTON (!!!) will probably win a Cup before Toronto!

Considering that the upcoming NHL entry draft will likely be the best one in years, i'm hoping that the Habs finish between 9th and 11th place. I don't want them to get another franchise-type pick (e.g Carey Price or Alex Galchenyuk). Heck, it won't bother me one bit if the Leafs don't make the playoffs since if there is a season that a team should consider tanking (in order to get a better draft pick), then it's this one.

There are a lot of rumors circulating in Toronto that the Leafs are currently trying to trade Phil Kessel in order to get a high #1 draft pick back. Next season will likely be Kessel's last season with the Leafs, so the time to trade him is now. Everyone on their roster is available except Jake Gardiner and Morgan Reilly (who's currently in junior).

Even though Kessel's numbers have been nothing short of great over the past few years (he's even got better numbers than Gino Malkin), he hasn't fit in well in Toronto & you can't give a one-dimensional player like him 'franchise-player' type money. He doesn't bring anything else to the table other than scoring goals: he's got zero presence in the dressing room, he can't check his own shadow, he's basically invisible among his teammates, he hates talking to the media (too shy), and ever since his arrival in Toronto, he's constantly been put under a microscope and it'll never stop as long as Tyler Seguin & Doug Hamilton continue starring for the Boston Bruins.

Don't get me wrong: I'm a Kessel fan. However, if the team can get fair value in a trade, then go for it and pull the trigger.

Bla Bla...

Since the turn of the century Habs rank average is #16 and Leafs #17.
Even if you stat since 2004-2005... Habs are still at #16 yet Leafs are #23.

Get serious guys if you don't want me to come back out here ! :eyebrows:

Cheer for Leafs ok... but while trashing Habs ? U got 2B kidding !

The draft does not work that way this april Doc. The 14 teams that do not make the playoffs all have a shot at picking #1. Tanking will not help get the #1 this time around for ANYONE. With that said, if Edmonton fails to make the playoffs and they get the #1 pick again...... something fishy is a going on.

In fairness to the Leafs no one has ever accused them of tanking. When you ROT like the Leafs do there is no NEED to tank!

Excellent analysis. Too bad for the Leafs that Burkie, in just one of his MANY incompetent moves, made the brain-dead deal that took Phil out of the Bruin doghouse, delivered a Cup to Beantown, and destroyed the Leaf franchise for years to come.

Really? Golly gee, then it seems so unfair that Malkin has won 2 NHL scoring championships while Little Phi has done squat.

Or maybe, just MAYBE, Little Phil's numbers aren't really better (except when Evgeni is INJURED and NOT PLAYING).

The FACT of the matter is that Malkin has played fewer games in the NHL and still has FAR more points than Little Phil.

Snakebitten? Or just plain crap?

And let's be careful with words like "great". Howe, Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Yzerman, Messier, Bobby Hull, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Trottier, Bossy, Richard - THEY were "great". Little Phil is struggling just to be adequate.

You mean MUCH like the DEAD THINGS did for years? :) bwhahahaahahaahahaha

I imagine that your childish attempt at wit ("dead things") refers to the great Detroit Red Wings.

It's true that they went through some tough times - not as "tough" (ha ha) as Toronto's mind you and certainly not as LONG as Toronto's - but they came OUT of those tough times and have been the best and most successful team in the NHL for the past two decades. If Toronto EVER emerges from its stinking PIT OF ABYSMAL FAILURE and if Toronto EVER comes close to matching the two decades of success that the Wings have put up, THEN we can talk.

P.S.: A frindly tip: Don't hold your breath waiting for that miracle!

Average rank for Detroit since the Lockout is #4.
Since the turn of this century Detroit average rank #2 with 4 times at the top of the league with 2 cups.

They're even better than San Jose, Vancouver and Bruins.

Detroit is simply the best Hockey franchise since the last streak of success from the Habs back in the 80's.

And it's the only team capable of beating the Habs overall record in the history of hockey when my grand-grand kids will be watching it.

As for the Leafs it's dead and gone. It's over. Can't do it ! Can't...doo it !
They will never be able to beat Habs.
It is mathematically impossible !

The actual numbers of years of hokey needed to beat the Habs (not only the amount of cups but all the other records Habs hold as a team) is about 598 years. and we all know by that time the Ice poles will be gone, and there will be a beach all year long in Antarctica !

So if I weren't born and living in Mtrl I would root for Wings all the way.

For me the best playoffs that can be Montreal against Detroit tied at the last 10seconds of the 3rd period of the 7th game.

Anything else... is less exciting and doesn't mean much in the history of Hockey !

Are u still smokin' some Iggy ?

BTW... Remember this one ? October 16, 1989: Leafs trade their first rounder in 1991(Scott Niedermayer) to New Jersey for defenseman Tom Kurvers.
That has to be one of the most stupid trade of all times !

Indeed, that one is hard to beat. Trading young Chris Chelios for an over-the-hill Denis Savard was also a bad one. Trading John Leclair & Eric Desjardins to Philly was equally awful. Patrick Roy & Mike Keene to Colorado for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinski & Andrei Kovalenko brought Colorado a Stanley Cup. Sending Stephane Richer to NJ for Sylvain Turgeon was another bad trade. Getting rid of Claude Lemieux was another bad move by the organization.

One of the team's best trades turned out to be one of Toronto's worst trades: John Kordic for Russ Courtnall. I don't know what Toronto was thinking when they made that awful trade. John Brophy wanted Kordic badly, but for Russ Courtnall?? Mtl probably would have been glad to send Kordic to Toronto for free!
