Long story short: Of the Original Six teams, five are worthy of respect. ONLY the truly wretched, gutless, inept toronto maple leafs are worth nothing but complete contempt.

very true - and facts back up your statement.

From 2005/06 to 2013/14 (inclusive, 9 seasons) here are the number times each original six team has qualified for the post season as well as the number of playoff rounds won.

Boston: 7 and 10
Chicago: 7 and 12
Detroit: 9 and 12
Montreal 7 and 5
New York: 8 and 8

Toronto: 1 and ZERO

Exactly right GHG. And the pathetic ONE time that the leafs squeaked in to the playoffs was in a SHORTENED season...before they had time to stage their habitual gutless collapse (like 2013-2014, for example, where as we all know these cowards lost TWELVE of their last 14 games!). Then, as a bonus, the ONE time they made the playoffs they were a source of laughter and derision when they staged the most gutless EPIC COLLAPSE in the entire history of Stanley Cup game sevens.

"The 100 Greatest Hockey Arguments" by Bob McCown

This book came out in 2007. I'm re-reading it now.

Some great quotes (remember, they're 7 years old...but they're now even MORE accurate):

"...there have been precious few Toronto draft picks who rose to great heights in the NHL. In fact over the ensuing 30 years there were only four Leaf draft picks one could fairly say became top-tier NHLers ...and none who were bona fide stars....Wendel Clark...his legend is much greater than his career...the other three - Russ Courtnall, Doug Jarvis and Vincent Damphousse - all spent their best years wearing Montreal Canadiens colours."

"How poorly have the Leafs drafted? A short list of players the Leafs have decided not to take since 73 includes Mike Bossy, Al MacInnis, Scott Stevens, Cam Neely, Brian Leetch, Joe Sakic, Rod Brind'Amour, Martin Brodeur..."

"...if Tiger Williams and Tie Domi ranking first and third respectively in all-time penalty minutes is the proudest Leaf accomplishment of the past four decades, that certainly speaks volumes about why this franchise has been swimming in mediocrity for so long".

Bravo - but too MILD! The Leafs are NOWHERE near good enough to be called "mediocre"...and it's now FIVE decades of absolute putrescence for the worst team in all of professional sports.

Another great quote from Bob McCown:

"It's almost redundant to say a player who spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs never got close to the Stanley Cup. Most who've worn the blue and white didn't deserve anything better."

Amen brother!

They get close to the Stanley Cup all the time. It's right down the street in the old bank building!

Tuukka Rask Wins Vezina

Congratulations to Tuukka....and Boston thanks Toronto once again!

But hey - at least Toronto got Andrew Raycroft (ha ha ha ha ha) for Tuukka.

Question: How did THAT one work out? Answer: Boston has a Vezina Trophy winner ...and Toronto has SQUAT...as usual for the absolute WORST franchise in all of professional sports.

"WORST franchise in all of professional sports "....... Joelcairo, you could't have said it any better. At one time, self pro-claimed hockey guru, Doc H, said that Josh Gorges should be made captain of the Montreal Canadiens. Well he refused a trade to the leafs. There was a deal made and Gorges nixed it. Now I am thinking, what were the leafs willing to give the Montreal Canadiens for Josh Gorges ? Dion Phaneuf.....NO..... Nobody wants him. They are stuck with him for another 5,6,7 years. They deserve each other. I could go down the list and I can't find anyone that the Habs would want, except.......first round pick. As dumb as this sounds, I would not put it passed them.

Who can blame Gorges?
Shame on Bergevin for trying to send him over to that joke of an organisation.Gorges deserves better.

Due to their compliance buyouts of Komisarek and Grabovoski, their latest buyout of Gleason will count against the salary cap. Much as they want to, due to the salary cap, they are reluctant to buy out Clarkson.

Last year, they paid Liles $4 million+ to play in the minor leagues and Phaneuf almost twice that to cut off a small area on the ice as a pylon.

If they dump everyone they should, they would exhaust half the salary cap on players who no longer even wear their uniform.

Trading News:

Rask -> Raycroft -> nothing

Reimer -> shell-shocked, soon to be traded

Liles -> Gleason -> buyout

Canadiens cast-off Gorges is willing to go to 15 other teams aside from the Leafs.

Here is a summary for the last five years:
http://www.thetoptens.com/worst-maple-leafs-trades-last-5-years/

They took 5 years to remove the noisy loser Burke and now have his quiet loser protege Noonis digging the hole deeper.

Every time someone mentions the Leafs for at least the next 5 years, I am going to hurt myself laughing.

I agree with Cosmo.

Not exactly this situation, but when a company wants to get rid of an employee on a personal service contract, if not forbidden by the contract, they would assign him to a humiliating task, such as cleaning toilets, hoping he would negotiate a small settlement to quit. Joining the Leafs (even with an extra month of vacation each year), however - decency demands a limit to what one can inflict on a faithful employee.

Another Nail in the Coffin

Someone should call the police to report a robbery. Victim: toronto maple leafs. Thief: Carolina Hurricanes.

The leafs traded John-Michael Liles for Tim Gleason. Liles is BETTER than Gleason and the cap hit for Liles ($3.875 million) is LESS than the cap hit for Gleason ($4 million), but that wasn't enough for those thieving Canes. They ALSO got valued prospect Dennis Robertson. Pure, outright THEFT by the Canes against the leafs.

Mind you, since Carlyle was wasting Liles just like he wasted Grabo (and how did THAT one work out, leaf fans?), what's the difference?

I posted the quote above on the day the leafs obtained Gleason. By their actions today, they've now in effect admitted that it was a typically boneheaded move.

This stupid trade will continue to hurt with a cap hit of $833,333 in 2014-2015, $1,833,333 in 2015-2016, and $1,333,333 in 2016-2017. Edit: After posting this, I noticed that GHG also noted it in another thread . Oh well, I guess it can't hurt to re-state the TRUTH.

The biggest comedy act in professional sports continues to elicit gales of laughter from the other 29 teams.

La Raison d'être of Leaf fans

http://www.personal.psu.edu/afr3/blogs/siowfa12/2012/09/psychology-of-a-sports-fan.html

Here is quote from the article:

<Another study showed the apparent idea of the masochist side of fanhood. "A large part of shared fan experiences, is suffering through years, sometimes decades, without tasting victory. It's really painful when you invest in a team that's ultimately a loser." The study goes on to say that in a fan's mind, losing proves loyalty, no matter the pain.>

The Chicago Cubs have gone without a championship for more than 100 years, while the Leafs haven't even reached 50, so sadly Leaf fans can't YET claim to be the most loyal in sports.

While the article answered a question which has always befuddled me i.e. why do Leaf fans exist, it raised many more. For example, during the off season, (which is longer for Leaf fans than for the supporters of the other 31 hockey teams), do Leaf fans frequent dominatrices to get whipped? Do they roll in poison ivy? Do they cheer for the Cubs?

Possibly they do some or all of the above but DEFINITELY they drink lots and lots of Koolaid and joyfully proclaim how excited they are because the NEXT season they will do great. They've been doing that for
47 YEARS and for 47 YEARS their predictions have been wrong, wrong, WRONG!

Oh my freaking ever-lovin word Anon, that's got to be some of the most hilarious stuff I've read in a while. I"m ROFLMAO hysterically. To answer, there's no need for a dominatrix...though Iggy has Joe.t...when you're a Leafs fan. It's the same experience as in blowing a series win against Boston despite a 3-goal late lead, except that I hear Joe wears spiked heels and Kessel doesn't.

Just for laughs, :thumb:
