Do you know what these current Leafs would need for one season? Mike Keenan. He wouldn't put up with the primadonnas on the team & if they wouldn't want to play his way, he'd immediately get rid of them. And whenever Bernier or Reimer would let in a soft goal or make a stupid play (like we saw Saturday night), he'd yank 'em and nail 'em to the bench.

This guy makes more sense :

I've been hearing all year that Ed Snider will supposedly offer up to 7 million a year to Babcock but personally I'd bet he'll stay in Detroit and become the highest paid coach in the NHL at around 4 million a year.

Many teams will be after Babcock. But he's expecting to be the league's highest paid coach & wants input in player personnel movement. Similar to what Patrick Roy has in Colorado. While many believe he's staying in Detroit, i don't believe it one minute. For one, he would have been signed to an extension a long time ago if this were the case. Ken Holland also doesn't to make him the league's highest paid coach since it would mean he'd be paid more than Holland himself. And many are not sure that Holland would be willing to give him as much power re: player personnel as he wants.

Toronto will throw big bucks at him & may even offer him the GM job if it means making the deal happen. Kyle Dubas & Mark Hunter are already assistant GMs and maybe sharing the job with Babcock may not seem like such a boneheaded idea. Buffalo will give him whatever he wants and the Flyers, among other teams, will make him a lucrative offer.

And who knows if Darryl Sutter will keep his job in LA after failing to lead them into the playoffs. San Jose is also another team that may be looking for a coach in the near future, but are they willing to make him the highest-paid coach and give him the control he wants?

The bottom line is that Mike Babcock is in the driver's seat and he knows it. He's also extremely loyal to his fellow coaches and knows damn well that were he to be the league's highest paid coach, it'll mean that the rest of his brethren will eventually see their pay cheques climbing.

Peter Horachek would be a great fit there.

Doc, did you hear the rumor that Dion Phaneuf was extremely upset that he was not moved to detroit at the trade deadline and that detroit really wanted him? Heard also they will try to get him this offseason. That would be hilarious for obvious reasons "around" the Merb hockey discussion threads
Detroit will likely also be looking for a coach once they get eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I also heard that rumor and it wouldn't surprised me if he'd be traded there for a first-round pick & a prospect. But your suggestion that Peter Horachek would be a great fit there makes a lot of sense. I also would see someone like Randy Carlyle there. I actually believe he'd be perfect for that team. But the big problem with Detroit right now is that they don't have much of a starting goalie. It wouldn't surprise me to see them get rid of Jimmy Howard during the offseason. It seems that his play has regressed this season.

What a great first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs!!! Every single series in the East is intriguing, and 2 out of 4 in the West. It'll be a great (hopefully) 2 full weeks of playoff hockey!

My Predictions:

East
1) MTL vs OTT, MTL in 7 (7 only because Pacioretty isn't healthy, and the Hamburglar will be a classic case of standing-on-head crazy hockey goalie...)
2) NYR vs PIT, NYR in 6 (Fleury may surprise, and Crosby and Malkin will not get swept.)
3) TB vs DET, DET in 6 (The Wings as underdogs - awesome!!! This will be a great series, and I'm totally not being biased! :D)
4) WAS vs NYI, WAS in 7

West
1) ANA vs WPG, ANA in 5 (Who cares?)
2) STL vs MINN, STL in 7 (This will be a great series. Will go down to the wire.)
3) VAN vs CGY, VAN in 6 (Who cares?)
4) CHI vs NAS, CHI in 7 (This will be the best series to watch. Kane is back. Rinne will stand on his head. If you're a hockey fan, you will watch this series.)

Go Wings! :thumb:

He'll keep the seat warm and toasty until Mrazek is ready.

With luck we'll only see Jimmy on the bench these playoffs. Mrazek is starting and if Jimmy never gets on the ice it'll mean the Wings are doing great. Too bad about Cole though.

Right you are. It took 82 games to get rid of the crap (or in the case of one "team" whose coach was canned in January, a lot less than 82 games) and now the 16 teams left will show us some REAL hockey.

The Wings vs. Stevie's Bolts: what a scenario! You can't go wrong whichever one wins...although I do have a preference.

Here's hoping all your predictions come true.

Seems Ottawa's Assistant coach Mark Reeds passed away today, RIP Mark.

The Sens are gonna be fired up to play their hearts out in his memory, combine that with Max Pacs concussion and this could be a short series for the Sens over the canadians.

Bruins fire GM Peter Chiarelli

I must admit that i'm somewhat surprised that Chiarelli was alone to get the ax. I'm simply speculating, but it's not entirely impossible that Chiarelli was fired for refusing to fire his coach, Claude Julien...and it's just a matter of time until Julien's firing is also announced.

Or maybe not. Maybe the owner figures it's good business to hang onto Julien since he still has some time left on his contract. Or maybe the Bruins' next GM will make the decision on retaining Julien or not.

Or maybe Chiarelli was fired because of his disastrous Tyler Seguin trade to Dallas.

But let's be honest: Chiarelli should not have been fired. Neither should Julien. The Bruins wound up with 96 points and were only a win away from making the playoffs. In another other season, 96 points usually gets you in the playoffs. But Claude Julien had to work with the players he was given. Zdeno Chara is old & it'll be hard to move his big contract. Tukka Rask still can't find a way to beat the Habs. It's time for Brad Marchand to take his circus act somewhere else. Milan Lucic's style of play is a thing of the past and it may be time for the Bruins to also part company with him while they can still get value for his services. And even though the Bruins wound up getting 96 points this season, the core players are not getting any younger and it's doubtful they can repeat this number of points without major changes in player personnel to happen.

While i'd love to see Peter Chiarelli wind up as the new Leafs GM, i can't see it happening due to the current managerial structure they have in Toronto. Therefore, it wouldn't entirely surprise me if he wound up replacing the ailing Bryan Murray as the Ottawa GM. Remember, Chiarelli was with the Senators in an assistant-GM capacity prior to joining the Bruins and was responsible for the Bruins acquiring Zdeno Chara.

And...one more time for...Petr Mrazek:thumb:

It's pretty amusing to watch the Wings do unto others what others have done to the Wings for years... Shot disparity: DET 14 - TAM 46. :D

Babs looks like he's taking a page from his Ducks days - tight defense, opportunistic offense. 2 beautiful shorthanded goals last night. Give credit to the Lightning big man for that move. Surprised Bishop let in his softie, Glendening has tried that spinarama move/shot a few times already this year.

Subban has a history of bad slashes. It was a cheap, dirty play. For such a great defenceman, such plays are beneath him.
