why babcock ? therrien took an ordinary team to a 110 pts season
Or maybe it's Carey Price who took an ordinary team & an ordinary coach to a 110 points season.
The habs overachieved, no doubt about that. Even most of the experts who've followed the habs all season long agree with this.
It's also doubtful that Carey Price will be able to repeat the same type of season he just did. He was marvelous for most of the season, but somewhat faltered over the past two months. Maybe it was fatigue, who knows. Or maybe it was because he played against better teams over the past month. He made the saves he was supposed to make on many nights, but didn't really steal any games.
The habs will need to address their longstanding issues. Mainly at the center position, and on defence. They'll have to figure out what to do with some veterans, mainly Plekanec and Markov, who is at the tail-end of his career with two big contract years left to go. And in order to address the issue at the center position, they'll have to trade young talent in order to get a team to bite and trade them that center they so desperately need. Many believe the likes of Nathan Beaulieu and Zack Fucale will be gone by next season. Beaulieu is also RFA. Fucale's stock may not be as high as many think since he's not even the bonafide #1 currently with his own junior team (Quebec Ramparts).
Jared Tinordi. His stock has really sunk within the organization. Greg Pateryn has surpassed him on the depth chart. Many believe that the habs have already given up on Tinordi and that it's doubtful he'll ever play another game with the habs. Alex Galchenyuk has not progressed as much as the team expected. He'll be in his fourth year next season. Insiders say that he refuses to change his style to suit Michel Therrien's system. Many would like to see him playing center, but habs management isn't so sure of that. For one, he's not really a playmaker. He's not a hard worker and according to many hasn't yet shown he'd be ready for the job. If you want my guess, he'll be traded during the offseason and it wouldn't surprise me if it's not to Edmonton. He's also RFA and the habs aren't really ready to open the vault for him until he's proven himself.
Several insiders have also told me it wouldn't entirely surprise them if Max Pacioretty was moved with the next two seasons. For one, he's prone to concussions after having already suffered two extremely serious head injuries in his young careers. And two, he'll likely want to get a big raise in three seasons at around the same time Carey Price will also expect to be among the league's top 3 goaltenders financially. With PK Subban already locked up for another 7 seasons at $9 million per, it doesn't leave much cap room for the team to work with.
The team would also like to have defenceman Jeff Petry back. However, this will likely be Petry's one and only chance in his career to hit the jackpot since the defence crop among unrestricted free agents is a poor one this season & Petry will be a much sought-after player. He's expected to get offers in the $5.5-6 million range....or more. With several habs players needing to be signed during the offseason, there likely won't have any money left to re-sign Petry.
Sergei Gonchar, Manny Malhotra, Bryan Flynn & Mike Weaver will not return with the club, that's certain. But who will be the others not returning? Torry Mitchell? Lars Eller? Tom Gilbert? Brandon Prust? Plekanec? Markov? Emelin? Galchenyuk? Only time will tell.
p.s. I predict that Michel Therrien will once again return as Habs coach next season, much to the dismay of many current habs fans.
