Congratulations to Chris Pronger, Niklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov and Phil Housley to being named to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, the likes of Dave Andreychuk and Eric Lindros wait patiently for their turn.

Never mind Andreychuk and Lindros! Why the Hell is Rick Middleton not in the Hall yet? A travesty of justice!

Mike Richards gets contract TERMINATED by Los Angeles Kings

It was quite surprising to learn today that the Kings didn't actually 'buy out' Richards' contract once he cleared waivers, but they had TERMINATED his contract. This situation rarely occurs and will only stick if the player breached his contract, which the Kings claim he did.

We've since learned that the Kings GM Dean Lombardi only learned about Richards' situation halfway into round 1 of last Friday's entry draft. Lombardi had been in talks with Edmonton and Calgary in order to have them acquire Richards. But when told of Richard's situation, he realized that he it would now be impossible for the Kings to trade him considering the circumstances of the news he received, which so far are still not known. So today, the Kings chose to terminate his contract and he's free to sign with whomever he wants.

But this story will not end here. The NHLPA is expected to appeal the decision. When & if it happens, the public will likely find out what led to the Kings deciding to terminate Richards' contract.

Kings GM is informed about Richards at the draft, which leads to the termination of his contract today

Speaking of great Red Wings draft picks! :p Lidstrom was relatively early though, and Federov was a special case... Congrats to those two legends. That brings the tally now to 10 HoF'ers on the Wings 2002 Stanley cup team. Oh the days of no salary cap... I miss those good ole days. :)

I don't quite get the Phil Housley inclusion. Head scratcher. Andreychuck has no business being mentioned in the same breath as these other players. But if Housley gets in, and Dino Ciccarelli gets in (similar poacher style player), I guess Andreychuk should eventually as well... A shame about Lindros. Such a dominant player when he was healthy, and then the Flyers fuck him over...

Bruins GM Don Sweeney said earlier that Tuuka Rask is "absolutely not on the market". My guess is this means that he is.

Sweeney also mentionned that he doesn't think that Bruins are in a rebuild. So if he doesn't know, who does? Considering that he just traded a 22-year old stud defenceman yet to reach his prime, it's quite possible that the Bruins are not rebuilding. Maybe trading Lucic was simply a cap move. But if so, why retain part of his salary? I've heard that he didn't think he could afford Hamilton's contractual demands, so he traded him. But the Bruins were in the driver's seat in regards to this. They practically could have paid him whatever amount and his only option would have been to sit out and pout.

Sweeney also said that he has tried to trade away Marc Savard's contract, but so far hasn't found any takers. Good luck to him!

I would have given the Flyers a 6th-round pick AT THE MOST. Players like Zac Rinaldo are on the way out in today's NHL. Even a team with the Flyers' reputation realized this and were probably shocked that not only could they find a team willing to trade for him, but to also get a 3rd-round pick???? Nuts!!!!!

Dave Andreychuk had 640 goals and 1338 points in a glorious NHL career. He is one of the highest scoring left wingers in NHL history, and is the league's all-time leader in power-play goals with 274. He has won a Stanley Cup.

If the likes of Clark Gillies, Joe Mullen and Bernie Federko are in the HoF, then there should be room for Dave Andreychuk.

In other NHL news, the habs bought out P.A. Parenteau's contract, and Matt Bartkowski of the Bruins will test the free agent market.

As for the Mike Richards situation, what's interesting is that if the Kings' decision is reversed, it will mean that he'll be back with the Kings organization since the date for buying out a player will have passed.

Alexander Semin was also bought out by the Hurricanes. The former GM who had signed him to that ridiculous contract was Jim Rutherford, now GM of the Penguins. Will he be tempted again and sign Semin to a 1-year contract? If so, this means that any possible deal with the Leafs for Phil Kessel will go down the drain.

Speaking of Kessel, he has decided to go and spend the next two months in Toronto to train with fitness guru Gary Roberts, which should be good news for everyone concerned. Has Kessel finally seen the light and realized that a skilled hockey player his age must be in great shape in order to remain an elite player?

According to Darren Dreger the Bruins' best offer to Hamilton was 6 years @ 5.5 each.

Calgary just signed him for 6 years @ 5.75.

If this is true and Don Sweeney let him go for 250K then he is a moron of epic proportions. (I can see a future for him in the Leafs organization after next years firing. :D)

If what we're hearing is true, it wasn't about money. Hamilton just wanted a fresh start, sometimes the fit is not right. The Bruins are not cheap. They had cap issues, but that can be worked out.

Earlier today, the Bruins traded recently acquired goalie Martin Jones to the San Jose Sharks for a 1st round pick next year and an unsigned prospect named Sean Kuraly.

This is a good trade for the Bruins. Getting a first-rounder plus a prospect for a goalie who wasn't starting anyway is a good trade. However, i may have traded Tuukka Rask instead if San Jose would have preferred him. Maybe Boston offered them Rask and they preferred Jones, who will be much cheaper than Rask. Boston could have saved tons of cap money in trading Rask instead of Jones and i predict big things for Martin Jones. He'll be a star in this league in the very near future.

In other hockey news, the Canucks traded Kevin Bieksa to Anaheim for a 2nd-round pick. Many insiders this may mean the end of Francois Beauchemin's time in Anaheim.

And finally, huge trade just announced: Chicago traded Brendan Saad to Columbus for Artem Anisimov, Mark Dano, Jeremy Morin, Cory Tropp and a 4th round pick next season. Columbus also receives prospects Alex Broadhurst and Michael Paliotta.

The Mike Richards Saga

NHL officials have been notified that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into ex-L.A. Kings player Mike Richards involves the prescription drug oxycodone.

Sources say Richards was stopped while crossing from the United States into Canada on June 17th ... and we're told he was questioned about oxycodone pills, a powerful painkiller.

For the record, Richards has NOT been charged with a crime.

However, he has since been cut from the team for "a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player's Contract."

A rep for the NHL Players Association tells us, "We are in the process of reviewing the facts and circumstances of this matter, and will discuss the situation with the player in order to determine the appropriate course of action."

Paul MacLean was named the new Anaheim Ducks assistant coach earlier. He and head coach Bruce Boudreau should be quite a quote machine this coming season in sunny Anaheim.

And in other news, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have announced that they're divorcing. Sad.

Newly acquired goalie Martin Jones was signed by San Jose at $3 million/season for 3 years. Not a bad deal for both parties. I predict big things for the young & tall goaltender.

Men,

Earlier today, the Bruins traded recently acquired goalie Martin Jones to the San Jose Sharks for a 1st round pick next year and an unsigned prospect named Sean Kuraly.

http://bigbadblog.weei.com/sports/b...ins-prospect-sean-kuraly-will-stay-in-school/

Touching base with WEEI.com Tuesday afternoon, Miami of Ohio coach Enrico Blasi said that center Sean Kuraly, whose rights the Bruins acquired earlier in the day, will stay in school for his senior season next year.

Blasi sang the praises of Kuraly, whom he called a “horse,” and noted that the 22-year-old will be the RedHawks team captain this season. The Bruins are aware of Kuraly’ intention to stay in school.

After the Bruins got Kuraly and San Jose’s 2016 first-round pick for goaltender Martin Jones, former Blue Jackets general manager Doug MacLean tweeted that Kuraly was a “steal” for Boston and that he is an NHL-ready player. The Bruins will have to wait, it seems.

This is the same as I heard yesterday. So the Bruins got an NHL ready player. He wants to finish school so he won't play soon but it sounds like he's got a clear head, which lead me to the next subject.

Earlier this past season, for some reason I'm thinking it was February or March there was a report about how Julien called out Hamilton, one among others, for poor play. As I said in an earlier post and as covered in the Hockey News, the issue with Hamilton were lapses in intensity, positioning, and toughness. Julien called out some players on their poor performances...with a heavy hand...as some reported. It's not the way I might approve most of the time, but then an player has to decide how to deal with it . There were discussions at the time that Hamilton may have reacted with resentment rather than becoming determined to work harder.

Now we learn yesterday that the Bruins offered Hamilton as much as $5.5 Million per year for 6 years, but Hamilton allegedly said he wanted $7 million per year. According to reports Sweeney then looked at that and decided he isn't nearly worth that and decided to get what he could for a guy who was basically saying he wanted out of Boston like another sulking ex-Bruin languishing on a team that can't make the playoffs. Frankly based on the average going rates in the NHL for a guy like Hamilton I would not have been happy giving him what the Bruins did finally offer. Because of the Bruins salary cap strains and the price for Hamilton it's now clear Sweeney did what he had to do, and it's clear Hamilton didn't like being pushed to perform to suit Julien's standards so Dougie wanted out since he singed with the Flames for almost the same money. When asked if that was the case Dougie refused to give any direct answer.

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/bruins_nhl/boston_bruins/2015/06/did_dougie_hamilton_bolt_boston

Dougie Hamilton wouldn’t say yesterday his relationship with the Bruins soured. But he didn’t exactly deny it, either.

The Hamilton trade took on a whole new complexion when news broke that the former Bruins defenseman signed with the Calgary Flames on a six-year deal with an average annual value of $5.75 million. It was long thought that he was looking for the same kind of money that Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was getting ($7 million).

It is believed the Bruins offered Hamilton a six-year deal worth $5.5 million per year. Given the relatively miniscule difference between the two offers, it begs an obvious question. Did Hamilton want out of Boston, forcing new general manager Don Sweeney to a make deal for which he’s been hammered since it went down on Friday?

Well, Hamilton wasn’t saying one way or another on a conference call, certainly leaving the impression that he did not want to continue his relationship with the Bruins, whether that’s true or not.

“I’m just excited to be a Calgary Flame,” Hamilton said after he was asked several times about his desire to stay in Boston. “What’s in the past is in the past.”

Hamilton is definitely not worth anywhere near $7 million per year regardless of any salary cap issues. Though he can be a very good player at times he's not living up to potential and he descends into sulking when he's called on to do so. If he wants to be another Kessel so be it. Sweeney was right to deal him now.

Cheers,

Merlot
