As i foretold all along, Bernier & the Leafs avoided arbitration and settled on a multiyear deal. As i had predicted (of course!), they met halfways. That's how you negotiate contracts. I should be a GM or an agent! ;)

Good deal for both sides! Go Leafs Go! :thumb:

I have been telling you for years that you are in the wrong business MISTER Holliday! Yes this was a very good signing by Lou Lam and his excellent brain trust in MISTER Shanahan and MISTER Babcock, 3 of the best hockey minds in the game today. The Leafs are in GREAT hands and it will be fun to watch this team evolve in the next few years.

Yes this was a very good signing by Lou Lam and his excellent brain trust in MISTER Shanahan and MISTER Babcock, 3 of the best hockey minds in the game today. The Leafs are in GREAT hands and it will be fun to watch this team evolve in the next few years.

1. You DO realize, don't you, that the "excellent brain trust" - Babs and Shanny - are BOTH Detroit alumni, and that "Lou Lam" (I guess you use that abbreviation because you can't spell his last name) is a Jersey alumnus. Funny, but I don't remember you praising ANY of these "best minds" UNTIL they went to Hogtown. Kind of inconsistent of you, fanboy - especially since in the post I quoted in #1293 you said that "Babs....is the wrong guy to lead the rebuild in Toronto."

2. BTW, why is "a rebuild" even necessary - considering that you rabidly supported EVERY SINGLE MOVE made by previous Leaf GMs Burke and Nonis? By gosh, I remember you and your idol (but especially you - at least your idol was sometimes honest in his evaluation of the permanent train wreck in Leafland) bragging EVERY year about how it was "now Burke's team" and the Leafs were going to kick serious ass. Only problem? EVERY year they seriously got THEIR asses kicked.

3. Hey, it's actually true: Babs IS a good coach and Lou IS (or at least, was) a fine GM. But Babs won ONLY one Cup in his TEN years in Detroit. The Wings won THREE Cups in the ten years BEFORE Babcock...so maybe, just maybe, Babs shouldn't get TOO much of the credit! And by the way Detroit's teams in Babcock's 10-year stint were far, FAR better than the Leafs were, are, or WILL be....so how in HELL is "the world's best coach" (at least since May 20, ha ha) going to do anything with TO? He has nobody even remotely close to the skill level of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Nyquist, Tatar, Kronwall...or the huge list of recently-retired greats like Lidstrom, etc.

Not so, sorry to burst your bubble.

TSN reported ' ...with a 2.87GAA and a .912 save percentage ( 21-28-7 record )....

...That performance, Bernier said Sunday, didn't put him in a good position as a restricted free agent.

Bernier said a LONG TERM DEAL was never discussed BUT instead the leafs and agent Pat Brisson wanted to determine

whether his new contract would be for one, two or three years.'

They never met halfway, never.

Again, sorry to burst your bubble but I would suggest that you keep your day job.

If you don't mind Joelcairo, I would like to add that Babcock came into the Detroit Red Wings organization with a team that were

in the playoffs 14 years in a row and was given the best players in Canada to coach in the Olympics and with all this, is considered a great coach.

This is the biggest test he has EVER taken. Can he do it ? Time will tell. Do I wish him luck ? Not really.

New Management, Same Result: Leafs Lose Again

Tie Game Bernier wanted $5.1 million for one year.

The Leafs offered $2.89 million for one year.

They settled on TWO YEARS (!!!!!!!) for $8.3 MILLION.

Winner: Tie Game Bernier. Loser (AGAIN): The Leafs.

Plus ca change plus ca reste pareil.

Here is a small but representative sample of comments from Leaf boards

He may have gotten the money but he ain't worth it.

Over priced.

Now trade him !

so much for a new regime and a new attitude. I thought the days of giving out ridiculous contracts to marginal players was over.

Too much for a guy who doesn't even know who Nelson Mandela was.

Hahahahahaha. The titanic gets even heavier..

He will never be a top 30

I think Bernier was slightly better than Reimer last year, and desired a C-. He has not been able to steel games for the Leafs when they sucked. Great goaltenders do that.

Good Lord, $8.3 million for a human sieve? Imagine what a guy who could actually stop pucks would command in Loony Leaf Land.

Not happy. Bernier will never be the answer. He was as hopeless as Reimer last winter. Between them they must hold the NHL record for giving up an early goal in the first few minutes of the game. Most nights the Leafs were down 1-0 within the first two to five minutes. Neither did much to boost the team's morale. I'm sorry and disappointed to see them back.

Steal for him.

He's not a 4.15 million dollar goalie at this point.

not overly excited about the money as I still think it may be a half million too much, he regressed and didn't really deserve the raise,

Ok, I'll say it, I think it's an overpayment, didn't deserve a raise IMO,

I was not too happy with many of the untimely weak goals or the frequency of the 1st shot of the game goals last year - the Leafs low ball offer was closer to Bernie's worth

With the style MISTER Babcock will want to play (a more defensive responsible game) I would not be surprised to see "Big Game" excel under the excellent coaching of one MISTER Mike Babcock.

Here's a friendly suggestion: Go see your doctor (ahem!) and ask for a prescription of reality pills.

As i was saying....Kadri wasn't a 3rd overall pick. I also have never been big on Kadri & would have preferred that the Leafs drafted a Christian hockey player. But at least they didn't draft a fucking Russian. And again, Galchenyuk was a 3rd overall pick and much more is expected for a third-overall pick, especially after 3 years in the league. At least Kadri isn't owned by the Russian mafia.

Yes sir you will be a good gm no muslim if possible no russian

As much as Mitch Marner (Leafs top draft pick in June) has been compared to patty kane, i think we are likely more to hear the comparisons of the two on the ice and not off it. Kane is a hot head where it seems success has gone to his head. First the cabbie incident and now he puts himself in a situation where he might be charged with assaulting a woman? Idiot.

Patty has far too much on-ice talent to be a Leaf. His skill level might have been appropriate for TO back in the Dave Keon days of a half century ago but not since then. The Leafs have strenuously avoided signing quality players for almost 50 years (with occasional exceptions like Sittler, McDonald or Turnbull).

As for his off-ice character, that's another story.

Dead Things Suck! :D

p.s. So do their ugly fans!

Agree completely: the Leafs have been dead things for 48 years...and it won't stop soon, even though their gullible and "ugly" (as per Holliday's quote) fans have been swallowing Leaf BS for half a century. My "ugly" (as per Holliday's quote) Leaf fan friends say they swallow better when they have lots of Koolaid.

"Thank you Mr. Burke." "Thank you Mr. Nonis."

Toronto may have signed Babcock, but realized his contract demands didn't merit the return. Terry Pegula also made it known he'd overbid everyone & give the Big Cock all he wanted. How do you expect him to bring passion to his coaching when it's obvious he's only in it for the money??

Many teams realized he's no better than the likes of Hitchcock, McLellan & even Therrien. Heck, some believed he was heading to Philly until Hextall surprised everyone and hired a college hockey no-name named Hakstol. And let's be honest: Big Cock hasn't really done much in Detroit over the past 8 years and that team certainly isn't ready to contend for the Cup for another 5 years or more.

I hope he enjoys his millions & living in Buffalo!

Ahh...Holliday, Holliday - I think you were being much too hard on MISTER Babcock (as your adoring little disciple would say) when you posted this on May 19. After all, according to you and your adoring little disciple, "the Big Cock" (hey, isn't that a little disrespectful towards TORONTO'S coach?) suddenly became "the world's best coach" the very next day!

But cheer up Holliday: if the Leafs fire "the Big Cock" - like they seem to do with ALL their coaches and GMs - maybe "the likes of Hitchcock, McLellan & even Therrien" will be available as the NEXT sacrificial lamb for the perpetual sad sack Leafs.

Apparently the Leafs are quite interested in Devin Setoguchi.

Actually, I think he'd be a perfect fit: one...and ONLY one good year...several years ago...when Joe Thornton was setting him up.

Declining stats ever since.

So hopeless last year that he was sent down to the AHL.

Recently out of rehab.

Yep, a PERFECT fit for the Leafs!

DS would be an excellent low cost signing, indeed :thumb: If he does well he can be shipped out at the trade deadlinbe for yet another pick in yet another deep draft in 2016, now your thinking cairo!

Love what MISTER Shanahan and Company have done with all these one year signings of quality guys who will have trade value for picks. Keep up the GRRRRREAT work on the rebuild gentlemen.

Speaking of drafting, the Leafs have come a long way baby, from 17th last year to currently #2 on the top prospects list :thumb:

Silly me. I thought that the Leafs were rebuilding since 2008 with "In Burke we trust".

Let's be nice and forget, as obviously the Leafs' fans have, the 40 years which preceded that saviour. Is this a new rebuild or a continuation of the big, truculent BB started? If the former, why is it necessary to take apart the team that genius built? If the latter, how's it going so far?
