Quoting post 192 "Absolutely correct Doc. That`s why Russia will win."

If Russia beats Spain....Highly unlikely but always possible.....then they have a chance to win the cup.

Is it too late to make a bet??

Not too late as it's 1 - 1 ;)

Pique just did the same mistake as Schweinsteiger in the semi final last euro against France. If you hand are in the air even accidental touch of the ball are penalized. Arms must remain along your body. He even got a yellow card complaining...

It would be quite an upset if Russia win this but do not think Putin is behind it. The Fifa is the only worldwide institution bigger then him. Were not talking about idiots like Trump here ;)

Cheers,

I predict a Russia vs Uruguay final. Uruguay is strong and has won the World Cup in the past....but Russia has Putin, the worlds first Trillionaire.

Don`t kid yourself Jal, if Putin can get Trump elected then he can buy FIFA.

Sam21,

The Russian goalie was stellar in the PKs, he looked athletic and the one he kick saved was awesome. De Gea on the other hand let at least one ball get by that was right at him and he should have had. As long as Russia plays like that in PKs, the strategy of doing nothing, committing as many fouls as they can get away with, and playing to get into PKs will serve them well.

once a goalie commits( which you may not know or see) by shifting weight to a foot to launch yourself in one direction it is almost impossible to change that given the closeness and the speed of a penalty shot coming at you.

But the Russian goalie was going headlong in one direction and the ball was going in the other direction when he stabbed out his leg and scissor kicked the ball away!!!!!! He adjusted to the shot in midair, a la Harry Houdini. A good goalie sometimes has to be a contortionist like Houdini and that is why Russia is moving on and Spain is on a plane home right now.

Croatia-Denmark is statistically closer match than Russia-Spain, but Denmark is seemingly employing the now de rigeur Russian strategy of defending, fouling like crazy and hoping for penalty kicks. Fouls are 16-5 Denmark at the moment.

Final stats on Russia-Spain

Fouls: Russia 19, Spain 5
Possession: Spain 74%, Russia 26%
Shots (on goal) Spain 25(9), Russia 6(1)

By the way, Spain today became the first team to complete over 1,000 passes in a World Cup game since at least 1966 when such records began being kept. A remarkable accomplishment in their losing effort.
