Having long been envious of posters with avatars, I finally decided to upload one. But everytime I click on the 'Change Avatar" button, a blank page appears Is it just me or has someone else experienced the same problem?

Have you tried editing your options; same problem recently.

I went to 'Options' then clicked the 'Change Avatar' button. Should I be doing something else in addtion to that?

DB, last time I checked (before the time merb went down) that option was functioning. Just tried it now and I get the same result as yours. I suggest you pm merbadmin or FZ and they'll be able to tell you when that option will be reactivated or if there's something else you'll need to do. Good luck.
