It seems, however, that the odds will be piled up against Schumi since he'll only be driving the new Ferrari a couple of days before the race during practice.

Apparently Ferrari asked the other teams for a special exemption from the rules which would have allowed MS to test in the current car but Williams said no so he had to settle for a few laps this week in a privately owned 2007 car. (wish I could get my hands on one of those )

From the little I've followed F1 this year, I know Ferrari wasn't very competitive at the year's start but has improved steadily as the season progressed with Raikkonen finishing second at the last race. It will be amazing if MS can keep up with Raikkonen considering he's 40 years old, hasn't raced F1 since 2006, and is still recovering from a motorcycle accident that left him with permanent neck pain but if there's someone who can do it, it's Schumi.

Excellent news for Mtl that the race will likely be back. Even though these days F1 racing pretty much stinks, it's great for the local economy & just the fact that the 'event' will once again kick off the summer festival season. Something's been missing in Mtl this year & i think a lot of it has to do with the fact there hasn't been any race like in past years. Heck, for once, the price of hotels has been decent!

The cancellation of the race couldn't have come at a worse time for the city's tourism industry.

Schumacher calls off F1 comeback, citing injury

Michael Schumacher announced the cancellation of his Formula One comeback today and you can bet that the big sigh of relief you're hearing is coming from Kimi Raikkonen.

Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion who's only been on the podium for Ferrari twice this season (Monaco and Hungary), must have been sweating bullets at the thought of Schumacher suiting up to drive the same car at Valencia, Spain, in about 10 days' time.

What if the man who's arguably the best F1 driver the world has ever seen but who's fat (by his standards) and 40 and hasn't driven a Ferrari in anger for nearly three years went out for the European Grand Prix and kicked his butt?

Would Raikkonen ever be able to recover?

It was bad enough before Felipe Massa was injured that most people figured Raikkonen really didn't care any more.

But if Schumacher had taken to the track for the European Grand Prix and not only beaten Kimi's times but demolished them, it would have been all over.

But Raikkonen can relax now. Not only will Schumacher not be his teammate but the driver Ferrari has nominated to substitute for Massa going forward is test driver Luca Badoer, a racer who never scored a point in 48 previous Grand Prix races.

His best finish was seventh and the highest he ever qualified was 12th. At 38. he'll be the oldest driver in the field at Valenica and he hasn't started a Grand Prix in nearly 10 years.

So there's no pressure for Kimi from that guy, is there?

Talk about Ferrari going from one extreme to the other: they very nearly had one of the best-ever F1 drivers in their car and now they've got one of the worst.

Schumacher gave it the old college try to get back into racing shape, despite head and neck injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash in February, but it was not to be. He made the announcement on his website this morning.

"The consequences of the injuries ... have turned out to be still too severe," Schumacher said. "That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by Formula One yet.

"I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible. However, much to my regret it didn't work out.

"I am disappointed to the core. I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me."

There had been hints all along that this really wasn't a done deal. Every statement put out by Ferrari included a qualifier – a paragraph stating that Schumacher would have to prove that his fitness was at F1 levels before they'd officially put him in the car.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was gracious in thanking Schumacher for his efforts.

"I am very unhappy that a problem means that Michael cannot return to racing," Montezemolo said.

"No doubt his return would have been good for Formula One and I am sure it would have seen him fighting for wins again." he added."

There has been no reaction from Kimi Raikkonen. You can bet, however, that beneath that Scandinavian stoic exterior of his there is one word bouncing around: "Whew!"

I read this morning in a Mtl newspaper that Mayor Tremblay was as surprised as anyone to see the F1 calendar since nothing's been agreed on yet. I also read in another paper that it's doubtful the race would be held on the 6th of June, and that local officials would rather have it at least a week later.

Report says F1 driver ordered to crash

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – Formula One's governing body is investigating "alleged incidents" from a previous race, believed to be an accident at last year's Singapore Grand Prix that helped Fernando Alonso secure victory for Renault.

Brazilian TV station Globo reported today that Nelson Piquet Jr. was ordered to crash into a wall at the night race so that teammate Alonso could take advantage of an early pit stop.

Piquet Jr. crashed heavily on the 13th lap and Alonso's gamble to run a short 12-lap strategy before pitting paid off as the Spanish driver went on to score an unlikely victory.

The FIA would not confirm that it was investigating that particular incident, only "alleged incidents at a previous Formula One world championship event."

Piquet Jr. was fired by Renault last month after a season and a half and the Brazilian driver complained about unequal treatment by team principal Flavio Briatore compared to his two-time world champion teammate.

Piquet Jr. said it was a simple mistake at the time.

"We tried two extreme strategies with Fernando quite short and me quite long in the hope of getting a safety car," Piquet Jr. told Autosport after last September's race. "If I hadn't crashed I would have been lucky with the safety car later in the race because I was very happy."

Legit or fix?

Am I the only one who thinks the Fisichella success story stinks?

by Norris McDonald

It intrigues me, bothers me, puzzles me no end that not one major auto racing website, or newspaper, has seen fit to question the absurd performance at the Belgian Grand Prix yesterday – and Saturday during qualifying – of driver Giancarlo Fisichella and the Force India Formula One racing team.

Giancarlo Fisichella came in second in the Belgian Grand Prix. Does anyway else find this a little odd?

Are we now, officially, so gullible that we don’t suspect there’s something seriously wrong with the result of that race and the qualifying session on Saturday?

Here we have a driver who is not world champion material by a long shot at the wheel of a car that has been F1's doormat for years.

For years.

That team has been hopeless. (Okay, every now and again when Eddie Jordon owned it, things would come together – but not often.)

It was in the hands of a Canadian for two years – Alex Schnaider – and didn’t score a point. He unloaded it on Spyker cars and they couldn’t do anything with it. They sold it to Vijay Mallya, an Indian billionaire, who renamed it Force India. During the last 28 races, it continued the tradition of not scoring one, single, solitary point (translation: finish eighth or better).

So on Saturday, Fisichella wins the pole at Spa. Yesterday, he finishes second in the race.

Just like that: from nowheresville to King.

Is this a feel good story? Or is something fishy?

It doesn’t pass my personal smell test, but I seem to be very much in the minority on this one.

I read the transcripts of the press conferences and not once did anyone ask a tough question. Example:

"Giancarlo, eight points and Force India’s best-ever result. But do you feel this is a race you could have won?"

"Do you feel this is a race you could have won?"

What kind of question is that? Why not:

"Giancarlo, what do you think was in your fuel this weekend that made you go so fast and how come the tech inspectors didn’t find it?"

Now, that would have been a good question, considering the circumstances.

Or even . . .

"Giancarlo, now that you are officially a Rocket Man, when do you plan to launch your track and field career and challenge Usain Bolt?"

At least that would have added some satire.

Anyway, Felipe Massa is going to be examined by ex-CART doctor Steve Olvey today and if he gets the all-clear, he’ll be back in his seat at Ferrari in time for the Italian Grand Prix.

If Olvey recommends against driving again so soon, you can bet that Fisichella will replace Luca Badoer in the second Ferrari at Monza and everybody will be so, so very happy.

Just think: an Italian in a Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix! Hollywood couldn't have written a better script.

Oh, he's under contract at Force India? A minor detail, easily fixed. Particularly when the real - - - is in.

Sebastien Vettel finished third in the race yesterday. Jensen Button’s world championship lead is now only 16 points after he crashed out on the first lap.

First of all , I do hope the race occurs...whenever in June 2010

I have every weekend in June booked at the hotel now.....

I do not think a fix was in, but Giancarlo is certainly not capable of winning a race..

An Italian solution would be Jarno Trulli.....

But stranger things have happened...????

Remember Olivier Panis in Monte Carlo ?

Or Nelson's dad winning in the Benetton in Montreal after fatass Nigel Mansell stalled his engine waving to the crowd on his final lap...

I met Nigel in Thursday's once..what a jerkoff

Not affable like Nelson Sr or Stefan Johanssson, who were happy to smile and have a word or two with a fan....

I have to watch the replay of the race now

It is broadcast on Speed wednesday @ 12:30-3 PM

PS- Jacques raced in that Nascar joke on Sunday

Geez...give it up

Best Regards

Bernie Ecclestone says F1 will return to Montreal in 2010.

http://www.rds.ca/f1/chroniques/279745.html
But why would it be returning to the F1 schedule in 2010 unless government has caved in to Ecclestone's $$$ demands? I can't see any level of government being able to justify annually handing over huge amounts of cash for this. The last I heard, Ecclestone was still complaining that they could not meet his price and also owed him money from previous years. And just last week he was claiming to have at least five other places outside Europe waiting in line to replace Belgium if they balked at paying his price.

this just in from TSN

MONTREAL -- The stage is set for Formula One's return to Montreal next year.

Grand Prix F1 du Canada Inc., and F1's governing body have reached a settlement in their financial dispute.

The issue began last fall and led to the cancellation of the 2009 Canadian Grand Prix.

In a release, local promoter Normand Legault says an announcement that Montreal is back on the F1 schedule is "forthcoming."

Legault says he never doubted that the race would return to Canada.

But he adds that he has no plans to be involved in the staging of future editions of the race.

Meanwhile, Canada has capitalised and looks set to regain its place on the calendar at a bargain price after failing to afford the cost estimated at $175m over five years that was on the table last year. Reports in the country's Globe and Mail newspaper suggest that a new deal has been done for just $75m over the same period - an incredible $100m less than the offer made one year ago.

Bernie Ecclestone says Senna's death was good for F1

SAO PAULO: The publicity generated by the tragic death of Ayrton Senna 15 years ago 'was good for F1', according to the sport's supremo Bernie
Ecclestone, who earlier this year was widely criticised for having admired Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein, reports Crash.net.

On the weekend of the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos— where home hero Senna twice triumphed — Ecclestone suggested that the accident that claimed the life of the three-time world champion at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola actually benefitted the sport.

"He was unfortunate," Ecclestone told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, "but the publicity generated by his death was so much...It was good for F1."

"It was a shame that we had to lose Ayrton, but it happened. He was very popular, but the actual event interested so many people who did not know about the sport."

Just got my notice today in the mail that I, as a 2008 ticket holder, have until January 15 to call for tickets before it is open to the general public. Looking forward to visiting Montreal again. I live in the Syracuse, NY area.
