Best Bond?

It's all about superheros and the Marvel Cinematic Universe these days. Which is a bit ironic since many of us are old enough to have grown-up watching superhero TV shows/cartoons and reading the comics.
Bond films once had the kind of popularity/cultural impact that the MCU has today (arguably even more so, as there are many more forms of entertainment now), but that would be back in the mid '60s.
But as a franchise Bond is still going strong, thanks to Craig and others, and more popular than at any time since at least the late '70s when Moore had his peak popularity as Bond.
Incidentally, Moore was 57 when he shot his last Bond. Craig looks much better in comparison, at 51. Nevertheless, the new Craig film is supposed to begin with Bond in retirement, shacked-up with Lea Seydoux somewhere in Jamaica.

There was a 4 year gap between Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall because MGM ran out of cash in 2010. Most of the modern Bond movies have about a 2 year gap. That probably figures into Craig's age too. But as already said, Moore was far older and looked like it too in View To A Kill. Not knocking him, though. I believe Moore was in his mid 40s for his first film and he looked much younger than that. Then, he proceeded to age poorly because he was a smoker. Anyway, Craig still looks good, even if he hurt himself on set recently.
Lea Seydoux is the most underwhelming Bond girl since...since...I can't even remember. Monica Bellucci is nicer than her.

FYI - Moore was a cheap bastard, He grew up post WWI and in the depression era. He bumped around London as an starving actor for years but slowly gained popularity but also a reputation for being cheap. In the late 50s he worked a lot in London for the TV studios. The first big role he got was for The Saint. When Connery left the Bond franchise and the movie producers wanted to take a floor of the hotel for the next Bond film, the hotel manager was expecting Connery but when he found out that Moore was the new Bond he did not want him in his hotel. When Moore was less known and doing TV shows for the BBC they put him in the same hotel where all the towels disappeared.
It’s going to be about 4 and half years between the release of Spectre and the newest one. That’ll be the biggest gap since the change-over from Dalton to Brosnan. It’s hard to believe in retrospect but, arguably, the best films--the early Connery ones--only had about one-year between their release dates.
Yeah, it’s too bad Monica Bellucci didn’t have a more substantial role in Spectre. Apparently she was going to be in Tomorrow Never Dies, but sadly the producers went with Teri Hatcher instead.
Lea Seydoux is a middling Bond girl for me. I thought she was good in the train sequence and in the sleepy/drunken scene in the hotel room of Spectre, but otherwise the film mostly wasted her. I think Craig and the producers probably recognized that, which may explain why they’ve brought in Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator/writer of Killing Eve to help script the new one. The director, Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, season 1), has also hinted at a more substantial role for Seydoux.
But there have been many worse Bond girls in the history of the franchise. Numero Uno among the offenders is the completely vacuous Tanya (“Ohh, James”) Roberts in A View to a Kill; but Denise Richards as a supposed nuclear physicist in The World is Not Enough is pretty bad, too.
I had never heard that before about Moore being such a “cheap bastard.” He was widely regarded as one of the nicest Bonds off-screen, not least for his work with Unicef. Moore was my Bond growing up, but never my favourite—just too effete, lightly-comedic and one-dimensional to my taste, though I still enjoy revisiting his films, however cringe-worthy at times.

I have to disagree with your comments about those Bond Girls, Meta. Tanya Roberts and Denise Richards were smoking hot in those films. The women in the Craig films were not as sexy as those two IMHO.
Yeah, they were hot but they were absolutely terrible characters and worse actresses. Being hot doesn't make up for it in those cases (I can just watch some porn if I want to look at a hot woman).
Totally agree!...that's why my pick for best Bond Girl was Eva Green from Casino Royale!...she was the total package!
Generally agreed - could have done without all the makeup (I think she looks better without)... but a great character. As it should be, considering the character in the book.
BTW, Eva Green was also the global face for one of l'Oréal's brands..and she may still be!

Oh man if the Killing Eve writer is working on the next Bond movie, that is really good news. That show is one of few that I watch religiously. It doesn't hurt to stare at Jodie Comer, either.
But totally agree with you on Denise Richards and Tanya Roberts. At least both of those women looked yummy even if their acting left a lot to be desired. Lea Seydoux was just...there. There was nothing about her performance and she wasn't a magnet for my eyes. She's probably going to be killed in the next movie anyway because there's no such thing as everlasting love for James. At least, the other times that we got dead Bond girlfriend/spouse, we got lovely Eva Green and Diana Rigg.

She's not playing Bond, who retired at the end of Spectre. She's playing a secondary character inheriting the OO7 designation, almost certainly just for this film. I suspect the producers are, in part, trolling racists and misogynists, saying in effect, while Bond may be a white male, there's no reason a Bond-like character can't be black and/or a woman.
I've seen a fair amount of blowback to this online, and it's simply baffling. It must be the result of a lack of comprehension. 007 is a job title. James Bond happens to have that job title when he's on active service. In this film he's retired. Thus someone else has been given the 007 title. Why is this difficult to understand, problematic, or a big deal?
