Guys, I am increasingly seeing Poutine on menus across New England, except it's not Poutine as you know and love it. Yes, it has fries, cheese and gravy, but that is where the similarity ends. The gravy used is not the same, the cheese used is not curds, the fries are different, and there are different additive ingredients. Just an example of many Poutines I have seen on New England menus is this one, Braised Short Rib Poutine:

"Braised Short Rib Poutine

$18.00
Crispy French Fries, Rosemary Gravy, Cheddar Cheese, Scallions"

So I have to ask the question: is this a bastardization of Quebec Cuisine, or is it original, "fusion" North American cuisine being refined before my eyes in New England?
Well let me put it this way: if you crave it when you are seriously hangover it's very close to poutine!

Now when I hear the word poutine, I think of Putin and Ukraine :(

I like the one from "Gérard patates" in Laval (but in Montreal).

The trick is not to order poutine. Last time i ordered a fry with sauce & cheese curds...

You guys may not believe this, but I have never actually eaten any Poutine, Canadian or Americanized. I saw/smelled it in Montreal restaurants over the years, and did not like the smell of what I sniffed. However, I think I am very likely to order one of the new Americanized variations like the one pictured above, especially seeing as they are being made Nachos-style with other cheeses. The American chef is seeing the french fry as a tortilla chip and treating it accordingly, and that kind of culinary analogizing can sometimes produce spectacular results. We have also seen this phenomenon with Philly Cheese Steak Egg Rolls, which started with the Chinese Egg Roll concept and substituted Philly Cheese Steak stuffing for the usual cabbage and pork and shrimp you get with the typical Chinese Egg Roll. I still like the Chinese Egg Rolls, but the Americanized ones with Philly Cheese Steak and other stuffings can be equally great.

If your poutine is coming from the USA, it'll likely be a bastardization of what "real" poutine is :p

You should definitely try the real deal whenever you're in town. And you don't need to go to a special place like La Banquise to get it. A poutine at any Lafleur's or La Belle Province will do you just fine.

I've had some good ones but I really like the sauce at Costco
I think the fries they use at Costco aren't greasy though. More like the crispy kind, which I dont like for poutine.
