Interesting. For us older folks it has been shown in studies it is much harder to learn a new language. Also, folks have stronger different parts of their brain. I am a very nerdy, detailed CPA background but am terrible at even English (I have a Toronto friend that edits my business papers before publishing!).
I was in Germany last year and like much of Europe, it seems websites for escorts, FKKs, etc often have options for many different languages. In Germany like in Canada, English is the most popular 2nd language and I had no problem site seeing, hotel, used Uber all over with not knowing German. Likewise, I have been to Thailand without knowing a word of Thai and had no problems.
For about the last decade I avoided Montreal in favor of Toronto with the general view that while the French-Canadians in general (and many Eastern Europeans) were the more sensual, intimate vs woman from US/Canada, most of the best agencies with more my type of women were French-speaking and I would have a hard time just speaking English. My last Montreal trip long ago I stuck with agencies etc that clearly spoke English etc. I have now been convinced I should not be concerned about my lack of any French. Unfortunately, a trip planned to Montreal was canceled by the airline due to COVID-19 and now it is doubtful I can even get to Canada this year.
I have neither the time, ability, nor desire to learn French. If that was an issue there are plenty of other places to go where not an issue. I have met many French-Canadians and great Eastern Europeans in Toronto whose English was not a problem.
Reading reports here in French is not an issue with Google Translate. I also have great translation app on phone and was ready to use it in Germany for talking but never needed it.
