There have been several designs of the iphone, before the final design was approved for production.

Here are some of the candidate designs: http://appleiphone.blogspot.com/

My guess is that some of the other candidate designs will also see production as part of a diversification strategy.

I pay good money for someone to find me a way for me to get rid of my cell phone for good and for ever !

(Sorry, Steve Jobs isn't a genius, just one of the original thieves of silicone valley. Its the researchers at Xerox back in the 70's who are the real geniuses that came up with all these ideas, and even more ideas that we haven't seen out in the open yet... this iphone and other gadgets aren't new. You want to talk about a real genious, talk about his x-partner and the real brain behind lots of low and high level innovations out there: Steve Wozniak)

Bang on LL. The only thing I want my cell phone to do is make phone calls.

regnad, Vista can do many things that no Mac os can do. The most important is that it runs on a PC which are available in just about unlimited configurations to suit every price range. It also runs just about any windows program and peripheral available today as well as most old programs and printers etc... something that new Mac operating systems cannot do. PC's also do another thing that Macs can't...you can play games on them.:p

3. Wasn't it Microsoft that used to get criticised for announcing a product that wasn't yet ready?
More like for releasing a product before it is ready.

Untrue about new Macs and games

Techman,

I realize that you make your living in the PC world, but your comments about Macs demonstrate that you're living in the past. Not to sidetrack things and start a Mac vs. PC debate, but my MacBook (with Boot Camp) lets me run OS X and Windows XP: my choice. I'm not a big game player, but I'm able to play any game I choose when running XP. I have a few consulting assignments in which I must use non-Mac software; no problem with the MacBook. And Apple's Keynote allows to create/do presentations (my lifeblood) that make PowerPoint look like something from the 1980s.

Left Coast, although boot camp allows you to run XP on a Mac, the majority of games with high hardware requirements such as Fear, Oblivion, Far Cry and many others will not run very well on a Mac, if at all. The hardware and the drivers for it are just not available. Besides, the point is that Mac OS cannot run games. At least nothing recent or very popular. Why buy a Mac to run a PC OS? Just buy a PC and do it properly.

I'm not saying that Macs are not good machines. They are very good at what they do. They are just not the holy grail of computers that the recent Mac vs PC ads like to suggest. I can't think of anything that you can do on a Mac that you can't do on a PC. And just about all the software available for a Mac is also available for a PC. Except software that comes from Apple.

Finally a serious competitor to Research in Motion's Blackberry:
With the "Calendar", "SMS", "Maps", "Stocks" modules so intuitively
and attractively displayed like cool widgets (referring to Yahoo widgets) ... it's already a take for the gadget-lovers.
When I first heard about Apple being interested by the cell phone Market,
I was curious to see how they would innovate. They replied with a stormy blast:
you get actually a fully functional ipod video with cell phone, internet and
multimedia capabilities. Simply superb!
Some of it's highpoints:
-automatically syncs bookmarks from your PC or Mac
This is awesome. very practical. Never brought to a mobile device up to now.
-multi-tasking: well, the ipod is already multi tasking and that was a feature
that turned me on -> displaying your photos while listening to music might seem
a de-facto functionality on such devices but it's not always the case (take SONY's
portable playstation "PSP": you cannot display the pictures and listen to music at the sametime).
-Safari web browser: what a great welcome (just curious to see how the mobile version of
Safari will turn out)

I don't see it as competition for Blackberry. the iPhone will be more targeted at the youth market wheras the Blackberry is geared towards the business market. I can't imagine an executive pulling out an iPhone at a board meeting. Different products for different markets.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never enjoyed being separated from my environment. I have never owned any portable music player and I've seen them all from the original cassette Walkman on up to today's offerings. I like to be aware of everything around me and walking around with music blasting in my ears just doesn't do it for me.

There is another program called Parallels which lets you run OS X and Windows at the same time on an Intel Mac. While Boot Camp is free and Parallels costs about $70, Parallels will let you run both systems at the same time.

The more I look into this iphone the more I see that Apple isn't after the cell phone market but after the tablet PC market, at the size of a cell phone. So really, Jobs and his people aren't re-designing the cell phone but the laptop computer. Once they have a stable platform I bet ya they are going to take google for a wild ride and start a content and ad space war.

What hasn't been announced is the massive infrastructure that has been developed behind the iphone to deliver content and manage messaging.

Microsoft on the other hand is concentrating in the auto industry, first step is the parthership with Ford. Same deal, tablet PC built in to cars, content delivery over the web on the road. They do have the infrastructure that is sitting behind live.com and msn.com.

So, if you take the bus you get an iphone, if you drive buy a Ford :D :D :D
