Creationism or evolution?

I was having this discussion with my nephews today, myself being an Atheist I am for evolution but do not agree with the comment that we are from monkeys or apes, humans are their own species Homo Erectus. If the monkey theory was correct why do we still have monkeys or apes, slow learners?

WE are all, at least us males, Eructus at times....I`m not quite sure about the Homo part....lol
OK being serious here. No one should believe that we are from monkeys.....but we do have a common ancestor.
All mammals including humans have a common ancestor.
Hell we have a common ancestor with the first fish that walked on land.

A more intriguing question is do you believe that we have a soul?
If no then end of story but if yes then things get more complicated.
If we have a soul then do all living forms have a soul too?
If not, then at what point in evolution did humans develop a soul?

Yes I agree cloudsurf, way before monkey / man time sounds probable. The monkey to man is all wrong, try explaining that to religious, socialists, pro climate change alarmists nephews.

Seriously it's Sunday, just came back from skiing, got a nice glass of wine, this thread is so much for my brain.

But it does make me think that I will have to teach my kid about it... Also being an atheist makes some things easier. I tell my kids to never spend their life believing in god, time is better spent to give away and to help others.

Monkeys and apes and human all come from a common ancestor. We are Home sapiens, not Homo erectus. Homo sapiens (us) did not come from modern apes. I recommend The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins, which traces back the evolutionary lineage of our species.

Yes, homo erectus is extinct but it is the oldest known link to what humans are now for body shape.
My nephews always some back with " what produced the first organism " must be a God / Creator of some sort but nothing solid for proof. Being an Athiest I do not thing I am 100% correct about not believing in a creator of some sort, 99% but there is always some doubt at there is no real 100% proof on either side.
My ex and family are super Catholics and I am an Atheist, never ever talked to them about it but both are now Atheists on their own beliefs, to the dismay of my out-laws.

Present day monkeys/apes are just the closest species to us. We come from a common ancestor, but if you go far enough all living things are thought to come from a common ancestor.

Even if you believe in god that doesn't mean you have to believe in creationism. Evolution is not inconsistent with the idea of a God that created the universe. It's just inconsistent with christian religion that says everything is 5000 years old and that humans and animals were created as is. That's what creationism is. Many scientists are also religious, but they don't take their religion literally.

The Vatican Science Council accepts both the universe began with a Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago (as opposed to 6000) and evolution.

That`s a good start.....especially since the scientific evidence is non-debatable.
Now the Vatican should accept that Humans are part of the animal kingdom . Highly developed brains and communication , but animals just the same.

The theory of evolution does not posit that we are monkeys or apes, it instead suggests that we share a common ancestor with them and observation of homo sapien sapiens does not conflict with that theory IMO.

That being said I am not an Atheist, I am more of an agnostic. There could be a God or Gods guiding evolution, some things in nature even our own DNA show so many signs of manipulation.

I've always found it odd that unlike everything else on this Earth humans do everything they can to get away from nature. Except for our brains/intelligence; we're extremely weak in every other area compared to all else on this planet.

Using "God" to explain things we don't know has precedence. Once upon a time, people attributed disease to God as well, because they had never heard of germs. The space for "God" becomes ever more narrow the more things we find out.

1. It's ape-like ancestors, in professional terms "proto-humans"...not monkeys.

2. Why does it have to be either one or the other. Why not creation leading to evolution? Besides, the oval office today offers an alternative. DEVOLUTION.
