Well the way I look at it, is this statement "We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers" pretty much equates to "We will not let the truth get in the way." which is what I believe Obama was indicating by his statement. I don't look at it as he claimed that the second statement was made by Newhouse. The article you posted is just someone spinning his speach in the direction you would like it to go. If you won't fact check your campaign, then how do you know that what is being presented is factual and not fiction?
Fact checking is an absolute necessity during a political campaign. Imagine how much it would have helped if someone had fact checked Palin before she gave interviews? Or if someone fact checked Michelle Bachmann? It's amazing how useful that can be.
