documentary on prostitution in cuba

Too bad for Americans who want to "vacation" in Cuba -- I'm thinking there are lots of visa restrictions and I don't think there are any commercial flights to Cuba from the US, thanks to the powerful Cuban-American lobby, which has been pushing and supporting sanctions against Cuba for its own selfish reasons.

I understand Cuba produces some of the best medical doctors -- at least Hugo Chavez thinks the Cuban doctors are better than those in his own (wealthier) country.

Are Americans allowed to fly to Cuba from Canada?

There's definitely ways to get to Cuba for an American. Through Canada is an option as well as through Central America. The key is to make certain your US passport isn't stamped with a Cuban stamp. I've been told it's normal practice that they don't stamp US passports.

What happens if it is? You're in big trouble later if US customs takes a look at your passport?

The US State Dept. website said that Americans may visit Cuba for cultural exchange experiences -- people to people contacts are encouraged. But Cuba does not take American dollars and upon entry to Cuba, Americans are to exchange their dollars for the local currency. There is an American "cultural" representative in Havana working there under the protection of the Swiss government. But can't bring home a Cuban bride. :nono:

Cuba has shit for doctors and they have 3rd world medical equipment. Their statistics are propaganda. Fidel and friends may have better doctors, and that's who Hugo was referred to for his medical treatment.

Quite true. An acquaintance of mine was in Cuba 10 years ago & the sp he saw happened to be a medical doctor. She told him a lot of professionals from various sectors resort to prostitution in order to pay the bills.

It almost seems like the roles are reversed. Here in North America, doctors, lawyers, engineers & other professionals are the johns....the one paying for sex. While in Cuba, those same professionals are the ones selling their bodies for sex. Amazing.

Amazing. Communism doesn't work. Imagine a doctor having to go to College and Medical School, intern and then prostitute herself to pay her bills. Imagine that. You can go to your doctor for sex and if you catch anything, she can treat you and her. What a country, Cuba is.

Gugu, my comment was not about the guys ethics or intentions, but about the video capturing the reality of a type of life many Cubans live.
For many Cubans.... hustling (men for cigars etc., women for sex etc.). is the only means to make some extra money for a few little luxuries, that we take for granted.

Cloudsurf, you are a voice of reason. I watched the entire film. It was totally done honestly. The film maker found a girl in the end who was not a prostitute, and the police were interrogating him and her because they thought she was a prostitute.

The film maker was trying to make a point. The only capitalist enterprise in Cuba is prostitution. Maybe you can add bootleg cigars. But the film maker made the point that Cuba was a poor country with a lot of police and government oversight and the only way some of these women can support themselves is thru prostitution. They can get a job that pays the standard number of pesos a week or supplement their incomes thru prostitution. And they also had pimps. One pimp in the film was a middle-aged man who had a manager's job in the hotel the film maker was staying in.

Spent a month there 11 years ago and US$ were the country's lifeblood. Special stores sold US/European brand-name goods for $. At restaurants it was routine to have two lines, one for people w/ $, the other for people w/ pesos (the national currency). Those w/ $ got seated first, those w/ pesos had to wait.

None of this was clandestine. It was all official, the way the govt wanted things to run. If it has changed since, that would be a very big change indeed.

pat98, not sure i'd say ... sex trade is one of the oldest professions. it's just another career option. maybe cubans look at dorky north american jobs like call-center jockey, Mickey D's cashier, GAP greeter as sad and hopeless.

I doubt most Cubans would look down on any job that paid North American wages.

I thought the documentary was pretty realistic.
