Can someone explain to me how GoFund operates?
About 24 hours after this thread was posted, the goal was $6k. I was about to donate but did not have my cr. card within reach. Forty-eight hours later, I go to its website and note that initial goal has been reached and it's new goal is $8k.
This time I held back from paying as I found it strange the goal had been upped.
Today, it's goal, having been reached again, is now $15k.
Does someone have an explanation?
I guess the organizers saw how quickly the initial goals were being reached and decided to keep raising them to maximize the collection effort. Have never run a GFM myself but maybe a campaign closes to new donations once the goal is reached, so not raising it would mean turning away donations from people who want to help. Even if a goal can be oversubscribed (which I think can be done on GFM), someone may look at it and think “oh, goal reached and then some, guess no more help is needed” and decide not to donate, so it makes sense to raise the goal in that case as well. That’s my interpretation anyway.

It seems that the initial goal of the campaign was set at $6,000, which was reached within 48 hours. The campaign organizers then decided to increase the goal to $8,000, which was also reached. Subsequently, the goal was increased to $15,000 after reaching the previous goal.

The reason for increasing the goal amount could be due to several factors. It's possible that the initial goal was set lower than the actual amount needed to achieve the desired outcome, so the organizers adjusted it accordingly as they saw the support and donations coming in. Increasing the goal can also help maintain momentum and engagement with donors who may be motivated to continue supporting the cause as new goals are set and achieved.

Overall, the decision to raise the fundraising goal on GoFundMe campaigns is typically based on the progress of the campaign and the need for additional funds to support the cause effectively.

If they reach the goal it can be increased. Case in point when the NFL player Damar Hamlin went into Cardiac Arrest on field in a game in Cincinnati two seasons ago there was a gofundme for his charity for toys for kids that existed.. The limit kept on being increased and eventually over 9 million dollars was raised. I think initially when he started it his goal was a modest like 15k or something like that. When a gofundme gets a huge response and exceeds the amount raised you can increase the amount.

Makes sense. Thanks!

It's sad for her, it really is. I just wonder charging 500$ per hour and previously working for agencies don't sex workers plan for rainy days? EI would give her a maximum of 15600$ for 6 months.

You don’t know what kind of expenses people have.

It’s not my place to talk but just so you know, she has been on a hiatus for a little while so I assume that whatever rainy days saving she had, has already been used for that purpose.

Lola had already been on hiatus since like 2022... She still had to pay her bills and feed herself during that time. She had recently came back to work and this happened. I'm not sure this is relevant, in any case. GoFundMe isn't reserved for the very poor.

Off topic but since it’s been asked.

People may charge 4-5-600/h which is a lot but a lot of us have lives, debts, medical issues, education and whatnot. Things that can end up being pretty costly and that need to be added to the cost of life, paying for ads and buying whatever is needed for this job.
