Look on the bright side....
1) It's still considerably less expensive than many other parts of the world (e.g. Europe, etc).
2) High gas prices is good for the Canadian dollar & the economy.
3) In 10 years, you'll think back & consider it was rather cheap to pay $1.50 for a litre of gas.
4) It might encourage people to get off their butts & start walking or cycling.
5) It gives the agencies an excuse to bring up their rates. (bad, bad idea!!)

I disagree with 2. High gas price is probably only good for very specific and small sectors of the economy. In general it's bad for the economy because everything is more expensive as the added costs for transportation get passed down to the consumer. It's also been shown that high oil and high gasoline prices limit the growth of the US economy, which isn't good for my stocks.
I like 4 though. But in other cities where cycling isn't an option, high gas prices won't really help the environment.

Number 4 does not make much sense in Canada since six months out of twelve months it is just too cold to be riding a bicycle however some people tough it out during fall and spring but the weather conditions are too harsh in winter. Imagine going to a job where you got to dress classy and all the snow and salt ruins your pants and shoes.
On the other hand public transportation in Montreal and the rest of Canada is too poor only Toronto is decent enough. Metros should be everywhere on the Island of Montreal we need like 468 stations with 337km of route length like in New York City. I would drop my car for public transportation if we had that.

Odd that surrounding towns gas is less $0.10 or more. Talk to your alderman and grab your ankles at the same time.

In Montréal, everything who is happening in the world is a good reason to raise the price... But with the death of an American diplomate 2 days ago in Libya.

All that because of a certain little movie made in the USA was badly showing "the prophet". Religion is sacred for some, to the point to make them kill people. That's always been.
So, there is your reason why the gaz is soooo expensive suddenly.

The murder of the American ambassador & three other State dept. officials will not bring about another war, for the simple fact that it had nothing to do with Libya, other than being the location where the act was committed. The murder was committed by a group of terrorists affiliated to Al-Quaeda. America is already at war against Al-Quaeda, so nothing changes there other than the fact they Americans will likely enter Libya in order to hunt down the murderous cowards. My guess is that they ran away like cowards usually do & might not even be in Libya anymore.
Second, the act was NOT committed because of that crappy movie. It was likely planned well-ahead of time, to coincide with the 9/11 anniversary. Protestors do not show up with machine guns, grenades & rocket launchers. What we're finding out is that the terrorists likely used the demonstrators as a diversion in order to infiltrate the area without getting detected. However, the compound itself was an easy target, considering no US marines were posted there & the doors had not been reinforced. All you needed to get in was a key.
And finally, there are many factors involved in higher gas prices. Among them are the recent hurricanes which just occurred in the southern US, the political instability in Iran & the middle east, etc. But i can almost guarantee you that a few hundred protesters in front of the US embassy in Cairo or the recent murder of American diplomats is NOT the reason why gas prices suddenly jumped up. Blame this on the oil speculators.

But, at least, we both agreeing that politics, natural events and a "human religion war" are freezing down the enthusiasm of money speculators, and that's bring the huge price of gas lately.

Prices shoot up instantly when there is a reason to make them go up, and then take their sweet time coming back down if they ever do completely. The "good" reasons are sometimes only weak justifications. Minor negative things shoot the prices up, while minor positive things don't do the opposite.
As for getting rid of the 5.7 ltr Hemi, keep it and enjoy it because in a decade you'll be driving a vehicle with an oversized lawn mower engine.

Comparded to other major cities of much greater populations, our transit system is very uncomfortable, inefficient, and problematic.
People keep bitching & whining about the price of gas, yet will keep on filling up their gas tank, no matter how much a litrer or gallon of gas will cost them.
Even if the price for a litre of gas would go up to $2, they'd still get in line at the gas station to fill up!
Canadians live in a country where they have free healthcare & other perks not available in many other countries. High taxes on fuel is only one of the ways our governments can pay for this. So at least, Canadians are getting something of value in return for the cost of higher gas prices.
