Habs Bandwagon

I hope the habs win this series as well I've seen a couple of the games so far and I hope it would be a good series. Hard to root for an American team when the Canadians are in it. Really Some how it's hard to imagine hockey as an American game if the Habs win this will give me a reason to go to MTL again.
Go Habs.

Go Habs.

Nowadays there's no such thing as a Canadian or American team. Each team may be based in a certain city but it has nothing to do with the nationality of the players. Last year Anaheim ( a supposedly American team) won the Cup with a shitload of Canadian players. As for the Habs: well, just start counting the Europeans on the squad.

I have to agree with you on this one JoelC...the Flyers have more Canadians on the team than Montreal does...including 3 from Quebec (Biron, Briere, and Gagne (who's hurt).

Habs got outcoached, outgoaltended & outplayed in this series. The better team won & i'm surprised it was as easy as it was. Did the mob go crazy again tonight after the game? Anyone burn down the Bell Center yet?

Better goaltending and more opportunistic, yes. Outplayed, no. And to use an old cliche, in sports it sometimes pays off to be more lucky than good.

Philadelphie n'est pas une meilleure équipe, ils ont simplement un meilleur gardien de but, ce qui n'est pas dûr d'ailleurs.

I'd have to disagree with this statement...while I agree the FLYERS had the better goalkeeper...you don't beat a team four games to one and NOT be the better team.

The HABS may have outshot the FLYERS in most of the games but it appears that was more because until tonight the FLYERS never trailed. When the FLYERS fell behind for the first time in this series they turned it up a notch and took it to the HABS, even outshooting the HABS tonight.

The better team one this series for sure.

Hello JB,

For a guy who seems to enjoy being coldly rational about the facts, I am surprised you would allow luck to enter into the equation. Really, winning 4-1 is not luck, it's control...it's just being better. Now surviving the Bruins series; that was much closer to "luck."

Cheerio,

Korbel

At least no one will feel motivated to riot.

You couldn’t resist a drive-by cheap shot could you? Habs fans always come back and stick with their team – unlike Flyer fans who are quick to bail on their team when things go wrong.

Montreal outplayed and out shot Philadelphia for most of this series – if it were not for some fortuitous goaltending on the Flyers part, the result would have been much different. And all the bounces went the Flyers way and they were able to capitalize on the their breaks while the Habs hit more posts than goals scored and were not as opportunistic with their chances. Unfortunately for the Habs, there were too many mental mistakes – the Flyers didn't beat us, we beat ourselves.

Go ahead and gloat, but the younger Habs team will be back next year, unlike the ageing Flyers who have peaked and its all downhill after this. Price will win a cup for the Habs before you ever see any championship in Philadelphia. As for the next round: the Flyers will have no answer for Crosby, Malkin and Hossa – Pens in 5. And Montreal is also a classier organization than the goonish Philly thugs - outside of Philadelphia, no one will be rooting for the Flyers!

Yeah! You pin point the problem, NOT AS OPPOTUNISTIC WITH THEIR CHANCES. It was all about chance in this serie...too many goal post for the habs and too many lucky goal for flyers. But chance is also a factor and it definately favor Philadelphia this year.

Not after the way you treated me most of the season GHG...what goes around comes around.

I think the shots on goal differance was overrated...as until last night the FLYERS lead the entire series...when the Flyers fell behind last night they took it the HABS and out shot them 37 to 35.

But the FLYERS aren't old my friend:

Average age statistics can be misleading at time as a few older players can skew the statistic. The FLyers have a very young and talented core...with some older veterans to keep the kids in line!!!

These are Flyers youger guys:

Jeff Carter 23
Mike Richards 23
Denis Tolpeko 23
R.J. Umberger 26
Riley Cote 26
Scott Hartnell 26
Patrick Thoresen 24
Steve Downie 21
Joffrey Lupul 24
Scottie Upshall 24
Braydon Coburn 23
Randy Jones 26
Lasse Kukkonen 26
Ryan Parent 21
Antero Niittymaki 27
Simon Gagne 28

While these folks skew the AVERAGE AGE:

Jim Dowd 39
Jaroslav Modry 37
Derian Hatcher 35
Mike Knuble 35
Sami Kapanen 34
Jason Smith 34
Vaclav Prospal 33
Kimmo Timonen 33
Martin Biron 30
Daniel Briere 30

Hello Gohabsgo,

Well...maybe because I have not been paying attention to hockey much for nearly 20 years I may have missed something. Is goal tending still a key part of the game? If it is then better goal tending is part of what makes a BETTER team...regardless of who shoots better. You cannot just dismiss the play of a great goaltender for the opposition and say...well...really we were the better team. It's like dismissing the pitcher in baseball. So, now you know how we felt in the 70s when my Bruins had to deal with your Dryden.

Don't forget that an even lower seed, the Bruins, took the Habs to 7 games. That alone should have given your fans evidence to prove your team just wasn't as good as you thought. If you were talking about a one game playoff, which can go either way for many reasons...including luck, you could make your argument. But in a long series where consistency is a must the better team becomes evident, regardless of regular season records. This year it was the Flyers who were better. That's a fact.

Cheers,

Korbel

"Luck" cannot automatically be written out of rational analysis since it can often be supported by facts (number of goal posts hit, number of goals scored on deflections, etc...). Call it luck or "getting the breaks", these usually even out in a series. In this case it's rather obvious they didn't.

I'm not that big of a hockey fan anyway, so I have no desire or time to engage in a lenghty debate on how intangibles affect the outcome of sporting events. So I'll leave it at that. :)

Hello JB,

Whatever. But the real question is: what is the tendency of fans of the losing team to over rate "luck" in the outcome? When does "sour grapes" enter the picture?

You need to look closer at those ages, if you think that the 10 players 30 and over are actually old. The FLYERS had two players that skew their age stats because they are 39 and 37. Modry who is 37 didn't play against the HABS but he is included in the Roster for average age. The Flyers roster I put forth were players that actually PLAYED in the playoff.

The statistic that GOHABGO was refering to a roster of 32 players which included young players that DID NOT PLAY thereby skewing the AVERAGE AGE of MONTREAL downward. Montreal had 8 players that were 30+ who played during the series, but because they have a bunch of extra players on the roster that did not play during the series it skews the average age of the group.

SO if you think 1 more player over 30 makes the FLYERS an OLDER team than the HABS you should go back to school...the "older" players on the Flyers play a more supporting role than the "older" players on the HABS.

The point was that the FLYERS are not an old team...but if it makes you feel better to think so please do...
