Do you get asked less questions when driving through a Nexus lane?

Like Tianna mentioned you'll run into that one guy that will ask you questions, the most important thing is to always be truthful. Nexus is based the honour system and they are very strict regarding being truthful, all it takes is one time and they will take the card away from you.

I'll give you an example of how strict they are, this happened to me a few months ago and I have never been stopped at the border before. If you are over your limit you have to fill out this form and just drop it off in a box, the box is in the Nexus lane so you don't even have to get out of the car. I was under the misconception that if you were over your limit or not you had to fill out this form while crossing the land border crossing.

Because this form has basic personal information to be filled out, I have that info pre-filled on my computer so I just print out the form before I leave. The time I got stopped I had left Montreal at about 6pm on a Friday night to go to NYC and on the way back I was at the Montreal border at around 2 o'clock. I forgot to drop the paper in the box so the agent said to just give it to her, then she started asking me detailed questions, which I found a bit odd for Nexus, She asked me when I left and came back & how much I spent. I answered truthfully. So then she said "You checked off 48 hours but you were gone less than 48 hours", I apologized and let her know that these were pre-filled and I hadn't noticed that 48 hours was checked off. Didn't matter they stopped me.

They searched my car, asked me for my receipts and told me to wait inside after they were done. They interviewed me for about 20 minutes, again I explained everything to them, they asked me how many times I've crossed before and if I had ever been gone for less than 24 hours before at the end they asked if I had any questions so I asked them if I would lose my card, and they said "that's what we're going to discuss right now" and asked me to wait in the waiting room.

15 minutes later they came out with a print out of the Nexus rules and asked me to read one of the paragraphs (stated about the severity of lying). Then they told me that they stopped me because I had checked off 48 hours when in fact I was gone for less time, It had nothing to do on how much I spent because I was within the limit of someone who had left for less than 48 hours.

Thankfully they said they weren't going to take my card away because they felt it was an honest mistake, they also said they put a note in my file stating that they explained the rules to me so if it happens again they will take the card right away. I also notice he had a printout in his hands of all the times I had crossed the border and when I had returned from the past year. They were asking me questions they already had the answers too to see If I was going to lie. I was detained for almost an hour and a half.

The Nexus card is worth getting especially for when you're flying, too bad all international airports don't have a Nexus line. When leaving or flying into Trudeau airport you can avoid long lines ,and the beautiful part when you return is you go to the kiosk, scan your eye and it spits out a ticket and you just go straight to your luggage area, don't even see a customs agent. Again like Tianna mentioned they do random checks but so far I haven't experienced that.

Applying for one is a bit of a pain and doesn't mean you will get accepted either, I know a few friends who haven't gotten accepted for the card.

I have an amusing story. One time I was crossing by land at the Champlain crossing and I wasn't familiar with the border there. There was a sign pointing to the Nexus lane that directed traffic to the left, away from the booths. I took that route, and it did occur to me for a moment that it was odd that I was going away from the inspection booths, but only for a second, because suddenly there were 3 officers running toward my car. I stopped and one was yelling at me while another had his gun drawn! Turns out that I had inadvertently taken a service road and bypassed the border altogether. There were heavy winds that morning and they had displaced the sign that indicated the Nexus lane. The officers were not impressed. I was delayed for some time, I imagine while they debated whether I could possibly have been foolish enough to have taken the service road by accident. Finally they let me pass, and I did not lose my Nexus privileges, but I think it was a close call!

Just got Global Entry. Do you get asked less questions when driving through a Nexus lane?

I used to have a Nexus card. I used it at the airport (never for land border crossings).
Inevitably, I get pulled aside for secondary inspection, costing more time. As a result,
I never renewed my Nexus card.

Chris Brown was stopped at the border today. With his legal history, I'm not sure why they would schedule concerts in Mtl and Toronto assuming he would be allowed entry. Maybe because the US keeps letting Bieber in?

Glad I have a NEXUS card now :thumb:

Chris Brown Says He's Been Denied Entry Into Canada
TORONTO — Feb 24, 2015, 8:33 PM ET
By ROB GILLIES Associated Press

Chris Brown tweeted Tuesday that he's been denied entry into Canada and that his concerts in Montreal and Toronto have been canceled.

The Grammy-winning R&B singer was scheduled to perform at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Tuesday and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Wednesday night.

Brown said in a tweet the "good people of the Canadian government wouldn't allow me entry. I'll be back this summer and will hopefully see all my Canadian fans!"

Brown was jailed for nearly three months last year for violating his probation by getting into an altercation outside a Washington hotel the previous year. He was on probation after he attacked pop singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend, before the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Nicole Perna, a spokeswoman for Brown, confirmed Canadian immigration officials denied him entry. Perna said Brown can apply to return at a later date and plans to do so. Live Nation, the promoter, said in a statement that "due to immigration issues" the shows have been canceled and refunds are available at the point of purchase.

In 2010, the United Kingdom denied Brown entry into the country, forcing him to miss four shows. The British government's Home Office said then that Brown had been refused a visa because of his past criminal record.

Stephane Malepart, a spokesman for Canada Border Services, said the country's privacy act prevents him from commenting on any individual case, but said several factors are used in determining admissibility, including involvement in criminal activity.

True story told to me by U.S. Homeland Security...Custom Agent's 14yr old son out on his ATV in farmland on U.S. border ran out of gas. He had 2 options: walk over 1 mi. to U.S. gas station or cross the road to CDN gas station. Remember, there is no fences or wall between our borders. He crossed the road. When he came back with gas Border Patrol was there and arrested him for crossing the border illegally. He explained the situation, told them his father was Customs Agent, etc. No leniency. They let him go but now has a record. he cannot get a NEXUS pass and for the rest of his life will be hasseled at the border.

Hassle at the border ?what hassle !!!!!lol

Greetings all

Dragnet the names are change but the event happened !

Talk about being at the wring place at the wrong time can make you live ?

I was bringing a loner car to one of my friends at the Canadian US boarder trough the Lacolle station .
Went trough the US boarder quiet rapidly they only wanted to know how long I would be there and where I would go .
Their was a McDonald restaurant right across where I was meeting my friend ,entering the restaurant no one is there so I go to the bathroom and leave .Its about 10 p.m
Moving out of Macdonald restaurant ,I noticed that there is at least 4 cop cars following me .
They activate there sirens and sandwich my car and orders me to stop .A minute later my car is surrounded by 7 cops holding their guns aimed at me and one officer knocking at my window .
He is pretending that I am intercepted for a traffic infraction a U turn ,but they are not traffic cops but US boarder Patrols !Hummmmm
Their is no equivalent in Canada ,but they are the US federal Police Patrolling the Canadian and US boarder and the US and Mexican Boarder .
Someone orders me to might my hands where they could see them and not to move !
Which I do obviously .
I am asked to provide my drivers license and they then pull me out roughly out of the car ,they bring me in the back of my car asked to put my hands on the roof of the car its a station wagon ,spread my legs ask me if I am armed and search all at gun point .
Nerve wrecking but its only the beginning .
They hand cuff me and push me roughly in one of their cars .
I am saying to myself I am in for a very bad night .
We reach their Police station they bring me in .
They finally tell me why I am arrested .
I am suspected to be a Canadian escaped convict because my description the summary description ,they have matches mine .

I am seated harms cuffed in my back 4 to 5 cops questioning me !
Emotionally I was wondering if I would get out of that alive and uninjured .
Interrogations technique threats that they will find what I am doing there where all used they even pretended that photos of me where taken with infrared cameras ,
Sniffer dogs the whole kit
I wanted to know why I was so nervous !WOW
I have just been held a gun point by 7 guys roughly thrown hand cuffed and asked me why I am nervous !
A real nightmare that lasted 8 hours until they finally confirm my Identity ,no excuses
They let me go .

Its one difficult arrest ,that I do not wish to anyone .

Being at the wrong place at the wrong time can happen to anyone .

Have you ever been at he wrong place at wrong time?

Cheers

I guess you're white, cause this happens to people of color all the time

It's been 5 months since I was last detained and released because of a mistaken identity.

It sucks every time.

He is not that big an actor, many people would not recognize the guy. He has this tin foil hat conspiracy theory that the Us government is after him.

You Also have to know... every Custom agent dreams of hitting the big one "making a big collar" .....
nothing to smuggle into or out of Canada. (really isn't)

Just like the old joke about NYC.... when a NYer looks out the window he sees nothing but California

These guys think were all criminals .... :p

Problem is ... reality sets in... Vermont ... that they just a man (or farm boy) guarding a gate.... and 99.9999999999 are just regular joes.

Anyone have an estimate for how long the NEXUS approval takes for a US citizen? Shortly after getting my GOES card (which allows me to use the NEXUS lanes coming back to the USA) I applied for the NEXUS card. Curious to know how long this will typically take.

It takes about a month just to get approved. Then you have to make an appointment for an interview. It's not much of an Interview, they'll explain the rules & scan your eye (for airport nexus lines), I can't remember if they take your fingerprints as well, and once that's done it takes a week or two to actually get your card.
