I was wondering if anyone successfully bought a phone number anonymously. My goal is to protect myself in case the government try to tackle this industry in the future.

At first, I tried using a VOIP number, but agencies block them.

Then, I bought a SIM from Public Phone and a vanilla mastercard with cash, but I cannot use the card for a phone plan because Vanilla do not accept recurring payment even if I have enough.

Did any of you achieve this?

I don't know about Canada, but in the US, you have several prepaid phone plan options that you can pay with cash. You just buy a prepaid phone. Activate it. And every time you run low on minutes, you buy a minutes card and top up

I don't know if that exists here in Canada. Surely there must be?

But the hassle of carrying a second phone around, I gave up on that after 2 months. Been using my own number for years since.

I really doubt they'll go through the hassle of tracking down your carrier to get your credit card information to track down a john

Chatr lets you use a fake name and address. No contract, you pay when you need it.

Get a chatr sim card at best buy and ask the best buy mobile employee activating it to use name XYZ, they don't verify. You can buy top-ups with cash at couche-tard and other places.

Canada has that also. The big three all have prepaid/pay as you go options, all you got to do is buy a prepaid card available at any grocery store, pharmacy, or depaneur and load it up. Also since there is no credit check you can put whatever fake name you want. I am a bit perplexed by OP's question, surely he must know this.

Maybe I’m reading your post wrong, but if you set up recurring payments wouldn’t they now have your credit card info and personal information?

You can buy a prepaid vanilla mastercard/visa and use a fake name and address. Like the one in the picture

Are you talking about the same prepaid credit card as me or about a prepaid phone plan? I might have expressed myself incorrectly, since someone asked a similar question. I attached what card I am talking about.

Looks like a good idea, I'll try it and report back. Thanks

Ohh okay. Now it makes sense. A misunderstanding it seems. I was talking about a prepaid account. As for prepaid credit cards, they rarely are accepted for recurring payments. But if you get a prepaid account then you can use a prepaid credit card to purchase airtime (a phone card) to add balance to your prepaid account.

Thanks for your answer, do you have any recommendation for the prepaid plan? I assume I won't need a credit card now and would be better off paying with cash right?

Almost any. Chatr, Fido, Bell. They are all similar and no need for a credit check as it is prepaid. You can put whatever fake name also since there is no credit check. You just need to buy a sim card and buy airtime and that is it. Pay whatever way you want, prepaid credit card, cash, or debit. You just need to buy a phone card available at any grocery store, pharmacy, or depanneur.

Honestly if, you have an old phone, and plan like Virgin at 19$ a month, a lot cheaper then prepaid phones, and you don't need the internet. That what I use today. Okay I have 2x phones. Used to use eSIM on my iPhone with Airalo, it was roughly the same price $15US per month. But feel the 2 phones situation is easier and when not needed, it is turned Off, which you cannot do with a eSIM.
I know the original question is personnel privacy, and on the other hand, we are very public with our Facebook, TikTok and other social media forums.
My 2 cents

These prepaid plans can get expensive especially if you need data. If you only hobby occasionally it might not make sense. I’ve had good luck with an app called Text Me. Its basically ad supported and you can pay a low amount if you want to keep the same number over time. I’ve been told that being a web based number some agencies might screen these, but so far I never had an issue. You will need internet, I use a personal hot spot over my other phone but if you want to feel safer you can use public wifi’s only.
